Bas Van Hooren discusses HRV and Readiness

Bas Van Hooren joins Matt in this episode to discuss his innovative research using heart rate variability and other metrics to determine athletic readiness. In this discussion we examine the current state and future of HRV metrics across athletic and other types of performance. Bas Van Hooren is a sports science consultant, strength and conditioning specialist, and athlete. He started his PhD on injury prevention and performance enhancement in running-based sports in 2017 at Maastricht University. Bas has been involved as a sport science consultant for various professional organizations and has been active as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the Dutch Olympic committee. As an athlete he has won several medals at the Dutch national championships, and he became Dutch National champion in 2017.   Bas combines his theoretical knowledge as a sports scientist/researcher with practical experiences from being an athlete and coach to translate complex theoretical concepts into useful and evidence-based practical applications. He has published over 50 journal articles on topics ranging from biomechanics to exercise physiology and has given multiple workshops on sport science-related topics for a variety of audiences throughout Europe.   Website: basvanhooren.com

Dr. Fred Shaffer discusses Time-Domain HRV Measures

HRV nerds rejoice! A friend of the show, Dr. Fred Shaffer, returns to geek out about HRV time-domain measures. Fred and Matt take a deep dive into the nature of these metrics and what they tell us about nervous system functioning. Fredric Shaffer, PhD, BCB-HRV is a biological psychologist and professor of Psychology and former Department Chair at Truman State University, where he has taught since 1975 and has served as Director of Truman’s Center for Applied Psychophysiology since 1977. In 2008, he received the Walker and Doris Allen Fellowship for Faculty Excellence. In 2013, he received the Truman State University Outstanding Research Mentor of the Year award. Dr. Shaffer was the principal co-editor of Evidence-Based Practice in Biofeedback and Neurofeedback (3rd ed.) and authored 12 of its chapters. He was a co-editor with Donald Moss of Foundations of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback: A Book of Readings. He co-authored with Mark S. Schwartz a chapter on entering the field and assuring competence in Biofeedback: A Practitioner's Guide (4th ed.). He co-authored with Donald Moss, a chapter on biofeedback in the Textbook of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2nd ed.). He co-authored with Rollin McCraty and Christopher Zerr, the Frontiers in Psychology review article "A healthy heart is not a metronome: An integrative review of the heart's anatomy and heart rate variability." He co-authored with Jack Ginsberg, the Frontiers in Public Health review article “An Overview of heart rate variability (HRV) metrics and norms.” He is a contributing editor for the journal Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. His current research focuses on techniques to increase heart rate variability. Dr. Shaffer is a BCIA Senior Diplomate in Biofeedback. Dr. Donna Schuman discusses Heart Rate Variability and Trauma

In this episode, Dr. Donna Schuman joins Matt to discuss her research on using Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback to address post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Donna Schuman joined the UTA School of Social Work in 2020 after working as an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work for three years. She previously worked as a social worker for the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Army and has almost two decades of clinical behavioral health experience. Her research is focused on studying the biopsychosocial sequelae of trauma and the use of biofeedback and nontraditional trauma interventions for service members, Veterans, and first responders. She has conducted research with the Lexington Veterans Health Care System on the use of heart rate variability biofeedback to treat Veterans' PTSD symptoms. Dr. Schuman holds licensure in clinical social work and professional counseling and is certified as a Master Addiction Counselor. In addition, she also holds national certifications in biofeedback and neurofeedback.

Four huge figures in HRV talk about an excellent resource for those interested in integrating HRV biofeedback into their practice. Today’s guides are editors of the upcoming book Evidence-Based Practice in Biofeedback and Neurofeedback, 4th Edition. These are some of the best-known names in the field of applied psychophysiology. They have each authored numerous books and articles, and are popular speakers and teachers. Inna Khazan is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and in private practice. She is also the President Elect of AAPB. Fred Shaffer is professor of Psychology at Truman State University in Utah, the director of Truman’s Center for Applied Psychophysiology and is the current president of AAPB. Dr. Brad S Lichtenstein talks HRV, Breathing, and Biofeedback

In this episode, Dr. Brad S Lichtenstein joins Matt to talk about his work as a naturopathic physician and his thinking about HRV tracking and biofeedback.    Dr. Brad Lichtenstein believes in the healing power of the breath and meditation to shift consciousness and improve health. As a naturopathic physician, author, speaker and former professor and clinical faculty at Bastyr University for over 25 years, he created the BreathSPACE to help people cultivate the space to open their hearts and breathe into their lives with ease.  Dr. Lichtenstein has a strong focus on developing psycho-emotional-spiritual health while dealing with chronic, life-challenging illnesses and trauma. He has taught counseling, mind-body medicine and biofeedback to naturopathic medical students and graduate students in counseling and health psychology, nutrition, and acupuncture and oriental medicine, as well as spirituality and psychology courses to undergraduates in health psychology. His contemplative approach to care, which integrates his years of study medicine, mind-body medicine and biofeedback, depth & somatic psychology, yoga and movement, bodywork and end-of-life care, was profoundly shaped by his participation in a joint research study between the University of Washington and Bastyr University where he provided over 500 guided bedside meditations to hospice patients.  Dr. Lichtenstein received his doctorate of naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University and is BCIA certified in general biofeedback and heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback. His chapters on mind-body medicine have been published in the Advanced Clinical Textbook of Naturopathic Medicine (2020) and in Integrative Men's Health (2014), and his articles have appeared in several publications and journals (STEP Perspective, Caregiver Quarterly, NDNR and the Huffington Post). Dr. Lichtenstein continues to facilitate in-person and online workshops for practitioners and the general public, and he speaks nationally on topics ranging from stress-reduction, mindfulness and health, mind-body approaches to healing trauma, and issues surrounding end-of-life. Finally, he has hosted over 40+ Death & Cupcakes gatherings around the greater Seattle area encouraging people to become more comfortable with the inevitable reality that faces us all. Dr. Chris Germer joins the Show to talk Mindfulness Self-Compassion - Replay

In this replay episode, Dr. Germer joins Matt and Inna to discuss his work with Mindful Self-Compassion and how it relates to heart rate variability.  Chris Germer, PhD is a clinical psychologist and lecturer on psychiatry (part-time) at Harvard Medical School. He co-developed the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program with Kristin Neff in 2010 and MSC has since been taught to over 100,000 people worldwide. They co-authored two books on MSC, The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook and Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program. Chris spends most of his time lecturing and leading workshops around the world on mindfulness and self-compassion.  He is also the author of The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion; he co-edited two influential volumes on therapy, Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, and Wisdom and Compassion in Psychotherapy; and he maintains a small private practice in Arlington, Massachusetts, USA.
