379. Marci Shore - What is worth dying for? Maidan Showed what Ukrainians are Ready to Risk for Freedom.

Marci Shore asks the vital question: What is worth dying for? While the world watched the uprising on the Maidan as an episode in geopolitics, those in Ukraine during the extraordinary winter of 2013–14 lived the revolution as an existential transformation: the blurring of night and day, the loss of a sense of time, the sudden disappearance of fear, the imperative to make choices. The Maidan was an illumination of the human capacity for natality, the ability to act, to begin anew at this moment. It was the turning point without which Ukrainian resistance to the full-scale Russian invasion cannot be understood. ---------- Marci Shore is an American professor of intellectual history at Yale University, where she specializes in the history of literary and political engagement with Marxism and phenomenology. Marci is author of Caviar and Ashes: A Warsaw Generation's Life and Death in Marxism, 1918–1968, and of The Taste of Ashes, a study of the presence of the communist and Nazi past in today's Eastern Europe. But today we will be discussing her most recent book, about the Revolution of Dignity – The Ukrainian Night: An Intimate History of Revolution. ---------- LINKS: https://twitter.com/marci_shore https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marci_Shore https://jackson.yale.edu/person/marci-shore/ https://history.yale.edu/people/marci-shore https://yalebooks.co.uk/book/9780300276831/the-ukrainian-night/ https://www.ukrainianworldcongress.org/marci-shore-on-revolution-of-dignity/ ---------- BOOKS: The Taste of Ashes The Ukrainian Night: An Intimate History of Revolution ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: kharpp - Reconstruction project supporting communities in Kharkiv and Przemyśl https://kharpp.com/ Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. 378. Andrew A. Michta - Washington’s Failing Strategy in Ukraine Shows the Urgent Need for New Thinking.

Washington’s likely failure in Ukraine shows the US needs a new national security strategy. Andrew A. Michta is senior fellow and director of the Scowcroft Strategy Initiative at the Atlantic Council of the United States. The views expressed here are his own: "The United States Senate’s failure to pass an aid package for Ukraine last month will likely be remembered as the first domino to fall in Russia’s war of aggression, potentially setting the stage for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s victory. And while the U.S. Congress is expected to try again in 2024, this was a clear sign that the West has grown weary of an open-ended “as-long-as-it-takes” approach. If this is to change, it’s time for a new strategy. It’s true that U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration succeeded in leading NATO toward a common response to Russia’s unprovoked invasion — and this will be remembered as a splendid manifestation of America’s strategic DNA. But what followed has muddied the waters — especially the drawn-out and overly cautious process of providing military assistance to Ukraine. Most importantly, the U.S. and its allies should have laid out a clear vision for victory. Instead, we heard from various officials that it’s either up to Ukraine to decide what the end state should be, that Putin can’t be allowed to win, or that Ukraine can’t be allowed to lose. Like the saying goes: If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there." ---------- Dr Andrew A. Michta is Director of the Scowcroft Strategy Initiative and Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington, DC. Previously he was Dean of the College of International and Security Studies at the George C. Marshall European Centre for Security Studies, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. In 2015 -16 he was Professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College. Prior to that he filled many similarly prestigious roles. He is also a Member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. Professor Michta has published books and articles on U.S. and European security, NATO, transatlantic relations, civil-military relations, energy security and democratization. He has special expertise in Central European politics and security. He is a frequent media contributor and government consultant. ---------- LINKS: https://twitter.com/andrewmichta https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-a-michta-39116934/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_A._Michta https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/expert/andrew-michta/ https://www.politico.eu/author/andrew-a-michta/ https://www.wilsoncenter.org/person/andrew-michta-0 ---------- ARTICLES: https://www.ft.com/content/b589f3d4-4ab1-4430-b2bb-d7c607473579 https://www.defense.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/3722921/proliferation-remains-best-deterrence-against-threats-to-us-space-access/ https://www.ifri.org/en/publications/briefings-de-lifri/tailoring-deterrence-high-north-nuclear-consequences-swedens ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: kharpp - Reconstruction project supporting communities in Kharkiv and Przemyśl https://kharpp.com/ Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. Silicon Bites #28 - Ukraine Continues to Hit Russia Refineries in A Strategy That's Worrying Moscow.

Edition No38 | 27-03-2024 Ukrainian drones “have knocked out 600,000 to 900,00 barrels” of Russia’s daily oil-refining capacity. Industry experts estimate that Ukraine’s campaign of long-range drone strikes on Russia’s energy industry has already succeeded in knocking out between 600,000 and 900,000 barrels of Russia’s daily oil-refining capacity, Bloomberg reports. Ukraine launched a bombing campaign against Russia’s oil and gas industry in January 2024 using domestically produced long-range drones. According to Kyiv officials, these air strikes are designed to starve the Russian invasion force inside Ukraine of fuel while also undermining the economic foundations of Vladimir Putin’s war machine. On March 1, Russia imposed a six-month ban on gasoline exports in a move widely linked to Ukraine’s drone attacks. ~~~~~ SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ~~~~~ KYIV INDEPENDENT https://kyivindependent.com/ukraine-war-latest-6/ https://kyivindependent.com/putin-recognizes-radical-islamists/ https://kyivindependent.com/opinion-why-isis-attacked-russia-and-why-russia-blames-ukraine/ https://kyivindependent.com/todays-attack-on-kyiv/ https://kyivindependent.com/ukhydroenergo-years-needed-to-restore-dnipro-hydroelectric-power-plant/ https://kyivindependent.com/sbu-head-russia-stops-weapons-supplies-via-crimean-bridge-after-repeated-strikes/ https://kyivindependent.com/borrell-eu-has-delivered-500-000-shells-to-ukraine/ https://kyivindependent.com/russias-response-to-terrorist-attack-alleged-torture-of-suspects-follows-pattern-of-abuse-in-ukraine/ https://kyivindependent.com/despite-no-opposition-and-predetermined-result-russias-presidential-election-was-heavily-rigged/ THE MOSCOW TIMES https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/03/23/at-least-60-killed-145-injured-in-mass-shooting-outside-moscow-a84579 https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/03/23/how-moscow-terror-attack-exposes-the-farce-of-russias-security-theater-3-a84595 https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/03/25/kyrgyzstan-warns-citizens-against-travel-to-russia-after-concert-attack-a84618 https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/03/25/russian-missile-attack-on-kyiv-wounds-9-a84617 https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/03/22/kremlin-planning-new-mobilization-for-kharkiv-offensive-vyorstka-a84571 https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/03/22/kremlin-says-russia-in-a-state-of-war-a84570 OTHER ARTICLES https://businessukraine.ua/industry-experts-ukrainian-drones-have-knocked-out-600000-to-90000-barrels-of-russias-daily-oil-refining-capacity/ https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-22/russia-crude-oil-refining-drops-to-10-month-low-after-ukraine-drone-attacks?embedded-checkout=true https://www.politico.eu/article/joe-biden-man-vows-more-help-coming-ukraine-despite-us-gridlock-jake-sullivan-kyiv/ ~~~~~ USEFUL LINKS: Vatnik Soup https://twitter.com/P_Kallioniemi http://www.medbat.org.ua/en/ Real World News https://kyivindependent.com/ https://www.kyivpost.com/ https://english.nv.ua/ https://www.themoscowtimes.com/ https://meduza.io/en https://meduza.io/ https://novayagazeta.eu/ https://www.newsweek.com/topic/russia... ~~~~~ TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. 373. Eduard Fesko - UK a Key Partner for Ukraine, Providing Economic, Humanitarian & Military Assistance.

The UK government is providing a range of economic, humanitarian, and defensive military assistance to Ukraine – often leading the way with supply of new capabilities and categories of munition, to encourage allies to scale up their commitments. Britain seems to be less intimidated by Russia’s so-called ‘red lines’, which time have proved to be illusory – just the bluff and bluster of a bully. Overall, the European Union has provided the most to Ukraine in terms of military, financial and humanitarian aid combined, but the UK is the second largest donor of military assistance to Ukraine. ---------- Eduard Fesko is Chargé d’affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Ukraine in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Norther Ireland. 374. Olga Onuch - Zelensky is Forced to make Decisions that are Existential to the Survival of Ukraine.

Prof. Olga Onuch has written what has been described as the definitive portrait of Volodymyr Zelensky, an extraordinary book called “The Zelensky Effect”. In this book, she explains the paradox of Zelensky as a leader and but also entertainer, businessman and risk-taker. She explores Ukraine’s national history to show how its now-iconic president reflects the hopes and frustrations of the country’s first ‘independence generation’. Interweaving social and political background with compelling episodes from Zelensky’s life and career, this is the story of Ukraine told through the journey of one man who has come to symbolise his country, and perhaps uniquely in the world is forced to make decisions that are existential to the survival of his country. ---------- Prof. Olga Onuch is Professor (Chair) in Comparative and Ukrainian Politics at the University of Manchester (making her the first-ever holder of a Full Professorship in ‘Ukrainian Politics’ in the English-speaking world). Olga joined UoM in 2014, after holding research posts at the University of Toronto, the University of Oxford, and Harvard University. ---------- BOOKS: The Zelensky Effect by Olga Onuch, Henry E. 372. Leyla Latypova - Russia's War has Taken a Much Higher Toll on Minorities than Ethnic Russians

Instead of what he thought would be a ‘short victorious war’, Putin has mired Russia in a protracted and costly struggle that may not only end Putin’s tenure in the Kremlin, but also threaten the integrity of the Russian Federation itself. The stakes could not be higher, and history shows that change in Russia moves like tectonic plates – nothing for decades, and then pent up forces are released in violent, dramatic and unpredictable changes. Some academics and politicians are starting to think the unthinkable and are urging us make plans to de-colonise Russia when the last continental European empire collapses. History may show that the disintegration of the USSR was not avoided, merely postponed. ---------- Leyla Latypova is a journalist covering politics and civil society in Russia's regions and ethnic republics for The Moscow Times. 371. Elisabeth Braw - Globalization is no Longer Working as Russia's War Accelerates Unpredictable Change

After the Cold War, globalization accelerated at breakneck speed. Manufacturing, transport, and consumption defied national borders, companies made more money, and consumers had access to an ever-increasing range of goods. But in recent years, a profound shift has begun to take place. Business executives and politicians alike are realising that globalization is no longer working. Supply chains are imperilled, Russia has been expelled from the global economy after its invasion of Ukraine, and China is using these fissures to leverage a strategic advantage. Given these pressures, what will the future of our world economy look like? ---------- Elisabeth Braw is a senior fellow at the Atlanric council. She is also a columnist with Foreign Policy, where she writes on national security and the globalised economy. Before joining AEI, Elisabeth was a Senior Research Fellow at RUSI, where she led the Modern Deterrence project. 368. Jerry Hendrix - Global Trade is Threatened by the Rise of an Autocratic Alliance Bringing Disorder

Geopolitical competition in the Black Sea is redefining regional order and shaping relations between states in the wider region. It has also challenged the idea of regional order based on regional ownership and laid bare how the security of different regions is interlinked. The Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean have increasingly merged into one geopolitical space, where regional and great power rivalries play out. ---------- Henry J. Hendrix is a retired United States Navy captain. He has served as an American defence analyst, an official historian and curator of the Navy and an author. His written work has focused on the composition of the United States Navy force, the structure of the Navy, the role of the aircraft carrier in modern strategic environments and the structure of the carrier air wing. He also publicly supported a recent plan to build a 350-ship Navy. Jerry Hendrix is President of Hendrix and Associates. ---------- LINKS: https://twitter.com/JerryHendrixII https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_J._Hendrix https://sagamoreinstitute.org/dr-jerry-hendrix/ https://www.usni.org/people/jerry-hendrix https://www.cnas.org/people/dr-jerry-hendrix https://www.linkedin.com/in/jerry-hendrix-9599684/ ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment.
