#268: Nipple bra, 1989, Not Hot Halloween

Myf and Zan are back and there’s a lot to catch up on. Like actively choosing to celebrate the headlights being on. Yep, we’re discussing Kimmy K’s nipple bra.Dolly Parton is reportedly going to be presenting an award at the ARIA’s and with both of us heading along we’re wondering if this is our moment. And with Taylor Swift’s “1989” re-recording out, a great long read remembering that time Ryan Adams covered us has us thinking about how women’s pop music is digested differently to men’s singer-songwriter approach. The shocking murder of Lillie James at the St Andrews School, and the response to it by their former principal, reflects the systemic issues with male violence, privilege, and protection. A brilliant editorial captures the feelings many of us have had, in it’s wake. And Halloween has once again brought out the “hot” looks but frankly, we’re here for the freak show. And Heidi Klum has some excellent competition. Zan is banging on about Rhys Nicholson’s excellent memoir, and Myf is watching Theatre Camp.Show notes:Kim Kardashian nipple bra: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/31/kim-kardashians-next-trick-a-bra-to-make-you-look-turned-on-by-absolutely-everythingDolly Parton at ARIAs: https://www.pedestrian.tv/music/aria-awards-2023-dolly-parton-presenters-performers/Ryan Adams and Taylor Swift’s 1989: https://junkee.com/longform/why-did-ryan-adams-cover-1989-taylor-swiftSt Andrews School: https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/comments-from-former-st-andrews-school-principal-reveal-deep-problem/news-story/b615b20e93a131c08fc01fda8036d0b2Halloween celebrity round up: https://www.pedestrian.tv/entertainment/halloween-celebrity-costumes-2023/Heidi Klum as a peacock: https://www.tiktok.com/@mtvuk/video/7296458718676340001?_r=1&_t=8h1Ef03I2PSJanelle Monae as a chameleon: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-12697387/Fans-jokes-Janelle-Mon-e-UPSTAGED-Queen-Halloween-Heidi-Klum-dressing-incredible-costume.htmlComedy in the Vines: https://comedyinthevines.com/Rhys Nicholson’s Dish: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/dish-9781761046759Theatre Camp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puVDIUk0kM8&ab_channel=SearchlightPicturesBang On is on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7HSPnTFVAuGTaDiTDU-ldkW5A2Lxbb5NBang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #267: Britney Spears, Goatees, AI is a thirst trap

It’s finally here, Britney Spears highly anticipated memoir “The Woman In Me” is out, and Zan has read it all in one hit. We go in with all you need to know, as Britney reclaims her story. It’s been a big week for Beyonce too, as we mark 10 years since she visited Brunswick, and she releases a new perfume to mark the occasion. Maybe not related, but we’ll say they are.Kings of Leon have come a long way from their southern charm, and are being called out for being absolute dicks at a festival by Groove Armada. Pass the popcorn. And a 90’s dream union has come true, with the children of icons continuing the dynasty.Goatees are back (ew), and AI has a hotness problem. Have you noticed? Meanwhile we’re banging on about a brilliant doco on artist/activist Nan Goldin, and Brigid Delaney’s Wellmania.Show notes:The Woman in Me: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/oct/24/britney-spears-memoir-most-shocking-woman-in-meBeyonce in Brunswick: https://twitter.com/zanrowe/status/1716546112411369952Beyonce parfum: https://twitter.com/zanrowe/status/1716546112411369952Kings of Leon: https://www.pedestrian.tv/music/groove-armada-call-kings-of-leon-jerks-on-internet/?mibextid=Zxz2cZ#Frances Bean Cobain: https://www.brooklynvegan.com/kurt-cobains-daughter-marries-tony-hawks-son-officiated-by-michael-stipe-report/The Goatee is back: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/goatee-beards-are-back-7dl85l2kbAI’s stereotypical Australians: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12647765/Stereotypical-Australian-looks-like-town-AI-Midjourney-sydney-melbourne-adelaide.htmlAI has a hotness problem: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/10/ai-image-generation-hot-people/675750/All the Beauty and the Bloodshed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD5pYQiT1D4&ab_channel=HBOWellmania: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34451942-wellmaniaWatch Bang On on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7HSPnTFVAuGTaDiTDU-ldkW5A2Lxbb5NBang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #266: Britney’s Memoir, Jada’s Revelations, Nicolas Cage’s Shopping

It’s raining memoirs, and we’ve got the dish on Britney Spear’s forthcoming tell all, and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s mic drop revelations in her just released “Worthy”. Dolly is lobbing in too, she loves a good book, and we’re here for it.Nicholas Cage is shooting a movie in south-west WA and we’re living for the reportage around his local spottings. And on the East Coast, the Dugong is being pitched as the perfect Olympic mascot. A grazing sea cow that is a bit shy? Let’s go.Myf has been watching a great new Julia-Louis Dreyfus film on the plane, and Zan is listening to reflections and analysis post Referendum, from some brilliant First Nations voices.Show notes:Britney’s Memoir: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/oct/17/britney-spears-i-had-abortion-while-dating-justin-timberlake-memoir-woman-in-meJada Pinkett-Smith memoir: https://variety.com/2023/film/columns/jada-pinkett-smith-memoir-will-smith-worthy-1235757763/Dolly Parton Behind the Rhinestones: https://www.thecut.com/2023/10/dolly-parton-fashion-photography-book.htmlNicholas Cage in Busselton: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-17/nicolas-cage-sighted-in-busselton-filming-the-surfer-movie/102986390Dugong for the Olympics: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-17/dugong-mascot-2032-brisbane-olympics-paralympics/102983848You Hurt My Feelings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20GWk5cWPBs&ab_channel=A24Not So PG: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/australia-has-voted-no/id1631941186?i=1000631477817Isabella Higgins: https://www.tiktok.com/@abcnewsaus/video/7290028195208842498Bang On now on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@abcaustralia/videosBang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #265: Beckham, Gaffa Banana, Silent Walking

#265: Beckham, Gaffa Banana, Silent WalkingIt’s been a full on week, and we’re here to give you a little reprieve if you need it. Fat Bear Week is here to help us, we have a winner, she is amazing, and we celebrate Grazer. Meanwhile Bang Fam are rallying around the Peregrine Falcons after their fortunes took a turn. The conceptual art piece “Comedian” (a banana gaffa taped to a wall) is coming to Melbourne for the NGV’s Triennial, so it’s time for Myf’s critical art eye. And for Zan to wonder who’s hungry.90’s sitcoms are back, but why? Frasier is recreating the nostalgia to the letter, while Jerry Seinfeld has been hinting of some sort of return. We explain all. Looking back seems to be the way we’re moving forward across culture in general, with none doing it better or bigger this week than the Beckham docu-series on Netflix. We dig into this epic story of Posh and Becks, football and fantasy, and a heavy dose of bad new millenium fashion. And a great read on how the internet isn’t fun anymore has crystallized a lot, and made us wistful for the world wide web. Could switching it all off and going silent walking be the answer?Myf is banging on about the second series of Billie Piper’s brilliant series I Hate Suzie, while Zan is reading Kazuo Ishiguro’s classic The Remains of the Day.And did you know Bang On is now on YouTube? #264: Beyoncé’s Renaissance film, U2’s Sphere, Stevie Nicks’ Barbie

Myf and Zan are frothing at the news that Beyoncé will bring her Renaissance tour to the big screen; we share what we know so far. In Vegas, U2 are putting on their own show. In a sphere. We review it (without having seen it).Stevie Nicks is being immortalised as a Barbie, and it’s “goodbye girl boss, hello snail girl” as some women switch their priorities from hustle to hammock. And at Paris Fashion week there’s much bravery and courage as women ditch the make-up and stop getting their roots done.Bang On has been obsessed with bears of late, and it continues this week cos it’s officially Fat Bear Week! Where Myf goes with this one, you have to hear. And we’re banging on about the Sentimental Garbage podcast, and season 3 of Only Murders in the Building.Show notes:Beyonce’s Renaissance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqjPzq3uYXQU2 at The Sphere: https://www.avclub.com/u2-las-vegas-sphere-humanity-peaked-1850893634This Barbie is Stevie Nicks: https://creations.mattel.com/en-au/products/barbie-music-series-stevie-nicks-doll-hmv00Goodbye Girl Boss Hello Snail Girl: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-01/snail-girl-era-is-here-goodbye-girl-boss-work-changes-post-covid/102913868Make-up is out, grey hair is in: https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2023/oct/03/makeup-is-out-grey-hair-is-in-how-it-became-cool-for-women-to-look-their-ageFat Bear week: https://explore.org/fat-bear-weekHistory of Fat Bear week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIRPPjfaHsA&ab_channel=ExploreLiveNatureCamsTake 5 S02: https://iview.abc.net.au/show/take-5-with-zan-roweOnly Murders S03: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaifwVfAf4E&ab_channel=HuluSentimental Garbage: https://shows.acast.com/sentimentalgarbageBang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #263: Bears, Drew Barrymore, Russell Brand

Myf and Zan are back after a break and catching up on the last two weeks of music, art, life and stuff. A lot has happened. Split ups, bears in Japan, brush-turkeys at Myf’s house…The writers strike has ended too, but one star broke early and the backlash against Drew Barrymore’s decision to return to work has been sizeable. Meanwhile Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner has decided that if you’re not male or white you’re not a master, and all those covers and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame history is starting to make sense. One of the biggest stories of the past fortnight has been the allegations against Russell Brand. We take a look at the media culture, and complicity, surrounding it all. And the reason women often stay silent. And it’s September which means FARSHUN. We take you to Venice where people are wearing undies (and not much else), and a wild show at Milan Fashion Week which is more a statement than a collection. In related news, Zan is banging on about The Super Models docu-series and Myf is watching HBO doco Telemarketers.Show notes:Writers strike ends: https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2023/sep/26/hollywood-writers-strike-ends-studio-dealDrew Barrymore: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/19/drew-barrymore-talkshow-writers-strike-videoJann Wenner: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/16/arts/music/jann-wenner-removed-rock-hall.htmlRussell Brand allegations: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-26/russell-brand-subject-of-police-investigation-after-complaints/102899992Lad culture and Russell Brand: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/21/2000s-lad-culture-russell-brand-hindsight-women-misogynyMedia Watch on Russell Brand: https://youtu.be/t_w6JGvBmCQ?t=364Silence and complicity: https://www.crikey.com.au/2023/09/21/russell-brand-sexual-abuse-harassment-power-structure/Microshorts: https://www.whowhatwear.co.uk/micro-shorts-trendAVAVAV show: https://hypebae.com/2023/9/avavav-milan-fashion-week-ss24-show-images-detailsTelemarketers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKLveXWvb2s&ab_channel=RottenTomatoesTVThe Super Models: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G59GvtrbFtQ&ab_channel=AppleTVBang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #262: Kylie and Timothée, Burning Man, Bird Sniffer

Wow, what a week. We really do cover it all on Bang On and partake in a healthy amount of googling, too. Yep, Myf and Zan are back to make sense of the week that was; music, art, life, and birds.Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet’s rumoured dating has been publicly confirmed in the VIP tower at Beyonce’s LA show. Smooching and smoking was just the pressie she wanted. Meanwhile down the road in Nevada people have been stranded at Burning Man after an unseasonable downpour. Are we allowed to enjoy it?The Yes campaign has been gifted its soundtrack courtesy of John Farnham, and a beautiful piece of writing from a prisoner about Taylor Swift, has floored us.And there’s a lot of animal chat this week. A lot. Bird sniffers, allegedly thieving koalas, the peregrine falcons are back. We are giddy with excitement. It’s a huge ep, enough to tide you over while Zan visits her Convenience Store Woman, and catches up on Myf’s plane watch recommend of the Bee Gee’s doco.Show notes:Kylie and Tim: https://www.pedestrian.tv/entertainment/kylie-jenner-timothee-chalamet-together/Casey Donovan at Burning Man: https://www.instagram.com/caseydonovan88Burning Man: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/06/burning-man-wealthy-attendeesJohn Farnham’s gift: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/sep/03/youre-the-voice-john-farnham-loans-song-that-changed-my-life-to-yes-side-advertisementBird sniffer: https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/23757855.chris-packham-reported-police-sniffing-bird-one-show/Claude the seed thief: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-05/koala-eats-nursery-seedlings-intended-for-wildlife-corridor/102814920The Peregrine Falcon webcam: https://367collins.mirvac.com/workplace/building-overview/falcons-at-367-collinsListening to Taylor Swift in Prison: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-weekend-essay/listening-to-taylor-swift-in-prisonBee Gees doco: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5tncybE7Wg&ab_channel=HBOConvenience Store Woman: https://www.audible.com.au/pd/Convenience-Store-Woman-Audiobook/1783785632Bang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #261: The forcible kiss, Cat Person film, …And Just Like That finale

It’s a big week for Bang On, and a lot can happen in seven days. Last ep the revolt against Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales was just kicking off, since then there have been calls for his dismissal, rallies in the street, hunger strikes, and a fair dose of blokes claiming victim hood. We catch up on it, and an excellent piece by Annabel Crabb that explains and eviscerates it all.The commercial value of women in sport, entertainment and business has been ignored for too long, and some solid numbers prove that you ignore at your peril. But what about women in STEM? A new study shows that celebrating inclusivity in science, technology, engineering and maths should start in the classroom, but we’re failing.Remember Cat Person? That viral short story from the New Yorker that had many of us resonating with it? Well now it’s a film, and we have the details for you. And Sarah Jessica Parker has become a cat person, adopting the little fluffball that popped up in the final episodes of S02 of …And Just Like That. It’s over, we have thoughts, and yes – we debrief in full at the season finale. And we’re banging on about escapist worlds in Asteroid City and the power of language in The Dictionary of Lost Words.Show notes:Annabel Crabb on the forcible kiss: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-08-29/fifa-spain-kiss-sexism-world-cup/102786334Commercial value of women: https://womensagenda.com.au/latest/stop-and-pay-attention-the-unsurprising-commercial-value-of-women/STEM women missing: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/aug/28/female-scientists-absent-australian-textbooksCat Person: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/12/11/cat-personCat Person film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_aZWQD3Q2w&ab_channel=STUDIOCANALAustraliaSJP adopts a cat: https://www.vulture.com/2023/08/sarah-jessica-parker-and-just-like-that-adopts-cat.htmlAsteroid City: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FXCSXuGTF4&ab_channel=FocusFeaturesThe Dictionary of Lost Words: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/49354511Bang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #260: Matildas legacy, AFL closet, Britney & Sam

Myf’s made her road trip north and has all the news from life on the road with Vyv. There’s heaps to catch up on too, as Myf and Zan reunite to reflect on the Matildas wins and how they celebrated. There’s a lot of talk of legacy too, and the changes being made in women’s sport overall. One thing that hasn’t changed is inappropriate behaviour at the workplace: Spanish Football Federation boss, we’re looking at you. Meanwhile in the AFL, a 4 Corners story on gay players within the league has us thinking about the legacy of that taboo, and why it still exists.Britney Spears and Sam Asghari have announced their divorce, and it’s hot girl summer on overload (with the Britney army protecting their queen). And we’ve warmed to And Just Like That so much we’re talking about S03 and our hope for spin offs.Myf’s still in her podcast era and banging on about a recent chat between Abbie Chatfield and Yumi Stynes, while Zan is weeping contentedly in the cinema at Past Lives.Show notes:Vanilla Slice victor: https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/food/eat/best-vanilla-slice-australia-north-end-bakehouse-in-shepparton-regional-victoria/news-story/dfbb3ed15bf19ff7d45bd3e8d540c167Funding boost for women’s sport: https://www.pedestrian.tv/sport/womens-sport-funding-matildas-government/Nikki Webster and the Matildas: https://www.pedestrian.tv/sport/nikki-webster-matildas-strawberry-kis/Luis Rubiales apology: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/21/world/europe/spain-soccer-kiss-rubiales-hermoso-apology.html4 Corners: The Silence: https://iview.abc.net.au/video/NC2303H030S00Britney & Sam: https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-66553230Octavia Spencer: https://www.pedestrian.tv/entertainment/britney-spears-sam-asghari-split/And Just Like That renewed: https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/and-just-like-that-renewed-season-3-max-1235702156/amp/Comedy in the Vines: https://comedyinthevines.com/It’s a Lot with Abbie Chatfield and Yumi Stynes: https://www.itsalotpodcast.com/podcast-1/episode/2210c106/consent-is-so-hot-with-yumi-stynesPast Lives: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA244xewjcI&ab_channel=A24Bang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J.
