#278: Madame Web, Big Hair, The New Look

Whoosh, what a week! Taylor Swift's American fans are freaking out about the MCG's lack of car park, Beyoncé has made history on the country charts, and we are put in our place with Dan Akroyd's musical chops. The new Spider-verse film has opened, and the coverage around Madame Web has been ferocious. Quotes taken out of context, conspiracy theories hatched... the narrative around the press tour has subsumed reviews of the film itself. It speaks to a larger discourse around movies these days, where the internal worlds of production take over meaningful critique of the film itself, and all in the name of clickbait. Oh, we go in.Elsewhere, lawn mowing is viral, the bush is back (again) and big hair's return says more than just hairspray sales. And awards season continues with the BAFTA's which means FARSHUN.Speaking of which, we're banging on about Apple TV +'s new Christian Dior series The New Look, and a brilliant novel The Bee Sting.Show notes:Bang Back to us for our Bang Jar: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auDakota Johnson: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/madame-web-press-tour-dakota-johnson-1235827795/Lawnmowers: https://www.thenewdaily.com.au/life/2024/02/18/lawnmowing-videos-rake-it-inThe Bush is back? https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/feb/18/could-the-pubic-wig-usher-in-a-flourishing-of-the-female-bushBig hair is back: https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2024/feb/20/tease-it-to-jesus-the-beatific-return-of-big-hairBAFTAs Farshun: https://www.vanityfair.com/style/photos/bafta-awards-2024-see-all-the-red-carpet-fashionThe New Look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXN5Ws7LxkAThe Bee Sting: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/the-bee-sting-9780241984406Bang On Live: https://comedy.com.au/tour/bang-on-live-myf-warhurst-zan-rowe/Bang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #277: Beyoncé goes country, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys

It's been a huge week for music cos the Super Bowl is on, and the biggest platforms on screen and off have been dominated by artists. Beyoncé stole the show by dropping her highly anticipated country era, with two new songs and an album to follow. The response has been interesting, and open up a conversation around who 'owns' country and who are the gatekeepers to the scene. This viral moment was a splash in a big pool of Taylor Swift's media domination; likewise, she used the Grammys stage to announce her new album and her dream run of record breaking, awards, album sales (and a Super Bowl win for her beau) has kept her in the headlines non-stop. As she arrives in Australia for her biggest shows ever we dare to discuss: are we getting a little Tay Tay fatigue? How are we complicit in this clickbait era? And when will the backlash begin?Alicia Keys has also been in the headlines, after her stunning performance at the halftime show revealed a smoothing out of her opening bung note, in post. A small thing leads to bigger conversation around shared history, memory, and trust when it comes to our collective experiences.Meanwhile Naomi Campbell is leaning fully into her germophobe vibes with some antibacterial fashion (tongue firmly in cheek), and we're banging on about a doco on "We Are the World", and the brilliant Blindboy podcast.Show notes:AACTA Award winners: https://www.aacta.org/aacta-awards/winners-and-nominees/Bang Back to us for our Bang Jar: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auAlicia Keys Twitter thread: https://twitter.com/BecketAdams/status/1757469277223882996Beyoncé and country music: https://time.com/6694806/beyonce-country-music/AV Club on Beyoncé: https://www.avclub.com/beyonce-s-pivot-to-country-is-meaningful-and-canny-1851249053Travis Kelce sings Viva Las Vegas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzSvE_6rLC8Right to disconnect laws: https://www.crikey.com.au/2024/02/14/right-to-disconnect-peter-dutton-basil-zempilas/Naomi Campbell fashion line: https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2024/feb/14/naomi-campbell-creates-boss-range-germophobiaThe Greatest Night in Pop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD3oU1gowu4Blindboy podcast: https://www.theblindboypodcast.ie/Bang On Live: https://comedy.com.au/tour/bang-on-live-myf-warhurst-zan-rowe/Bang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #276: Grammys recap, Jacob Elordi, Dolly Alderton

It's a huge week of music, as all 3.5 hours of the Grammys unfolds. Zan has watched it all, Myf's seen the highlights, and we're here to unpack it all for you. Stick around too, cos we're gonna go deep into the amazing Grammys FARSHUN.The trailer for Amy Winehouse "Back to Black" has been released, and we're in two minds about how we feel about it. Related; the divisive Saltburn is keeping people talking. Not least cos an Australian radio producer and Jacob Elordi have gone head to head on bathwater hunting in Sydney. Meanwhile, did you know you can get a Saltburn bath bomb? Check the ingredients. And we're banging on about some great stories. Trent Dalton's "Boy Swallows Universe" series on Netflix, and the latest read from Dolly Alderton, "Good Material".Show notes:Grammys best and worst: https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/the-best-and-worst-moments-of-the-2024-grammys/Back to Black trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSAm0BvAMYQ&ab_channel=STUDIOCANALAustraliaBoy Swallows Universe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raizBMsLYugGood Material: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/good-material-9780241523674Grammys farshun: https://www.vogue.com.au/fashion/news/grammys-2024-red-carpet/image-gallery/e18a8f53cfa59abe7b67447f6480626eMarc Jacobs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_Zk3qzebiwBang On Live artwork: https://www.instagram.com/p/C3CSFvzL1-u/?igsh=MXZjbXdxaTB4enNvMg%3D%3D&img_index=1Bang On Live: https://comedy.com.au/tour/bang-on-live-myf-warhurst-zan-rowe/Bang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #275: Universal v TikTok, Mob Wife, Priscilla

Myf and Zan are back for 2024, and it's a big bang! A huge week for music too, with a showdown between Univeral Music Group and TikTok raising big questions around what artists are paid, how they appear, and what AI will do to the music in the future.AI and deepfakes have been in the cycle too, with Taylor Swift and local MP Georgie Purcell. Image based abuse is growing, and often targeted towards women. We unpack everything that went down. In happier news, some big records were smashed and history made in this year's Hottest 100; it was all very padam. And FARSHUN is busting out of the gates with mob wife, eclectic grandpa, and winklepickers. What are winklepickers? Oh we'll explain. And we're banging on about a great podcast full of pearls of wisdom, and Sofia Coppola's new film Priscilla.Show notes:Bang On LIVE: https://comedy.com.au/tour/bang-on-live-myf-warhurst-zan-rowe/Univeral v TikTok: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-01-31/universal-music-pulls-music-tiktok-open-letter-bullying-bad-deal/103410648TikTok response: https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/tiktok-statement-in-response-to-universal-music-groupDeepfake pornography: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/jan/31/inside-the-taylor-swift-deepfake-scandal-its-men-telling-a-powerful-woman-to-get-back-in-her-boxGeorgie Purcell: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-01-30/victorian-mp-georgie-purcell-altered-image/103403664Doja Cat #1: https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/news/hottest-100-2023-countdown-winner/103388978G Flip: https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/news/g-flip-most-entries-single-hottest-100-record-broken/103397256Kylie breaks H100 record: https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/news/kylie-minogue-padam-padam-hottest-100-record/103396788Eclectic Grandpa: https://www.vogue.com/article/the-eclectic-grandpa-trend-personal-style-dilemmaMob wife: https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2024/jan/20/tomato-girls-are-out-leopard-print-is-in-gens-z-wants-to-look-like-mob-wivesPinterest trends: https://trends.pinterest.com/Louis Vuitton sandwich bag: https://www.delicious.com.au/entertaining/style-trends/article/louis-vuitton-releases-5000-sandwich-bag/wsig97evSuccession bag auctioned: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2024/jan/15/succession-ludicrously-capacious-bag-sells-for-18750-at-prop-auctionWinklepickers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinklepickerWiser Than Me: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wiser-than-me-with-julia-louis-dreyfus/id1678559416Priscilla: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBWk6BohVXk&ab_channel=A24Bang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #274: Bang On Summer Bonus Bang!

Hi Bang Fam! What this? A surprise little gift for you, as we head into Festivus! Back in November Myf and Zan headed to Nagambie Lakes, a beautiful spot about 90 mins north of Melbourne, for a huge comedy weekender called Comedy In the Vines. We did a live version of Bang On, amongst stand up sets from Celia Pacquola, Dave Hughes, Geraldine Hickey, and Susie Youssef. It was very silly, it was a bit windy, and we definitely made a giant cut out of ourselves and forced Luke McGregor to play “pin the wine on Myf and Zan”… but we also had some wonderful Bang Backs with two very funny comedians and mates, and wanted to share that with you.So dive in, as Rhys Nicholson bangs on about a podcast Zan is absolutely bingeing this summer, and Luke… well… you should just hear it yourself.Oh, and we’re very stoked that we’ll finally be bringing Bang On LIVE to the whole country! We’ve just announced a huge national tour, visiting places we’ve never been before and bringing Bang On to capital cities and towns alike. We hope to see you at one of the shows. Until then, have a safe, restful, and beautiful New Years. Thank you for your love and support of Bang On this and every year. We love youse heaps. See you in 2024. xShow notes:Rhy Nicholson’s Dish: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/dish-9781761046759Keys to the Kingdom: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/keys-to-the-kingdom/id1707091523Bang On LIVE shows: https://comedy.com.au/tour/bang-on-live-myf-warhurst-zan-rowe/Bang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #272: Rizz, Taylor’s TIME, Year in Review

It’s December! And that means we’re wrapping everything (including presents) to see out another big year. It’s official, the Oxford Dictionary has got the charisma, or the Rizz, as their Word of the Year would have it. Taylor Swift has been named TIME mag’s Person of the Year, and Mariah has been knocked off the Christmas Tree by a fellow icon. We’re stoked. And as everyone wraps their Best Of lists for the year, Myf and Zan cast their pop culture eyes and ears back across our fave moments with the Bang Fam. From Bears to Barbie to Beckham, and let’s not forget Beyonce. We had microscopic handbags and big red boots. Kylie Padam’ed her way into our hearts (again), and Gwyneth got rectal ozone therapy. We all made sense of 2023 in the best way we knew how.Herein lies the most cooked, inspiring, and memorable moments of the last 12 months. #271: Dolly Cheerleader, Word of the Year, Spinal Tap Sequel

Hello Bang Fam! It’s almost December, and if that doesn’t make your head spin then this past week in music, art, life, and stuff, will.Dolly Parton continues to slay, performing at the Thanksgiving Halftime Show in a cheerleader outfit for the NRL, but some people (a dude) ain’t having it. We’re living for the responses to his opinion that a 77 year old woman should “dress her age”.It’s Word of the Year time too! Where dictionaries across the world capture the year that was in one word. Or two. So what has captured the imaginations of language in 2023? Meanwhile we’re back in 1984 with Spinal Tap with the news that a sequel is planned for this iconic rock mockumentary.Linda Evangelista doesn’t want to date anymore with a reason we all feel deeply, and The Prodigy have quietly changed the lyrics to one of their most divisive songs. And we’re banging on about a great doco on the song factory of Stock, Aitken and Waterman, and the return of wholesome TV with the Great British Bake Off.This episode contains strong language.Show notes:Support Act: https://supportact.org.au/give-help/donate-now/Dolly Parton’s Halftime performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFE6SNXoZuE&ab_channel=NFLMacquarie Dictionary Word of the Year: https://amp.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/nov/28/cozzie-livs-light-hearted-term-for-cost-of-living-crisis-named-macquarie-dictionary-word-of-the-yearMerriam-Webster’s Word of the Year: https://www.npr.org/2023/11/27/1215372795/merriam-webster-word-of-the-year-2023-authenticThis is Spinal Tap sequel: https://www.vulture.com/article/spinal-tap-sequel-cast-release-date-details.htmlLinda Evangelista: https://www.thecut.com/2023/11/linda-evangelista-has-an-excellent-reason-to-stay-single.htmlThe Prodigy: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-11-28/have-the-prodigy-changed-lyrics-smack-my-bitch-up-controversial/103159282Renaissance latest trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGYIXarTNbA&ab_channel=Beyonc%C3%A9Legends of Pop: https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/tv-series/stock-aitken-waterman-legends-of-popGreat British Bake Off: https://binge.com.au/shows/show-the-great-british-bake-off!3606Bang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #270: Ghost Diana, Andre 3000’s flute album, Saltburn

It’s a veritable smorgasbord of pop culture this week, and yes we’re kicking off with the slide into soap opera for The Crown. It’s final season is upon us and oh boy, it’s a bit cooked. Zan is watching it all.Nat Bass has revealed she’s in a loving relationship with a woman; how good is good news? And it’s Marie Claire’s turn with their Women of the Year issue, and it’s all about the Tillies. It’s 2023 and we’re still chasing the question “who is Banksy?”, and also dealing with the (heart)breaking news that Hall is suing Oates.Elton John and Jake Shears are penning a musical about Tammy Faye Baker – please, take our money.  And Andre 3000 has emerged with a new album of ambient flute music! Oh Bjork just dropped a banger with Rosalia too, what a time!Greg Sheridan’s hot takes on why women should be making more babies misses a few key points, and Myf and Zan have been in the movie theatre watching the much talked about new film Saltburn, and the David v Goliath movie Dumb Money.Show notes:The Crown S06: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/nov/16/the-crown-season-6-review-so-bad-its-like-an-out-of-body-experience-netflixNatalie Bassingthwaite: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/natalie-bassingthwaighte-speaks-her-truth/id1553858670?i=1000635227493Marie Claire Women of the Year: https://www.marieclaire.com.au/marie-claire-women-of-the-year-2023Banksy: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/nov/21/banksy-reveals-his-first-name-interview-clipHall & Oates: https://pitchfork.com/news/daryl-hall-sues-john-oates/Tammy Faye Bakker musical: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/17/theater/tammy-faye-bakker-musical-broadway.htmlWhy women aren’t having babies: https://womensagenda.com.au/latest/eds-blog/worried-about-australias-birthrate-address-the-cost-for-women/Andre 3000’s ambient flute album: https://open.spotify.com/album/33Ek6daAL3oXyQIV1uoItD?si=lF8wpgs1QAC89tNsJNQFhwAndre on why: https://www.tiktok.com/@pigsandplans/video/7302111551656316206?_r=1&_t=8hZ3pk9Zk9fBjork & Rosalia: https://variety.com/2023/music/news/bjork-duet-rosalia-oral-salmon-fishing-1235804178/Saltburn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lALMdJf6UUE&ab_channel=MGMDumb Money: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmr8YmwnZ3w&ab_channel=SonyPicturesEntertainmentBang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J. #269: ARIAs goss, Jared Leto’s climb, Towel skirt

We’re fresh from the ARIAs and have all the behind the scenes chat to dish for you. Troye Sivan dominated, and he’s had a bit of a week aye? Being parodied by Timothee Chalamet, and being nominated for a Grammy. But the Grammy’s are being dominated by women overall, and we love to see them finally reflecting the culture.Jared Leto has climbed one of the most famous buildings in the world, and we want to know why. While the Fab 5 are losing a family member, as Bobby Berk announces his departure from Queer Eye.Magazines have cooked it this week too… why is McDreamy the Sexiest Person Alive in 2023? And why the heck is Kimmy K the GQ Man of the Year. Clearly, we have thoughts.Meanwhile narcissism is on the cards, with the new iPhone apparently making selfies horrendous, and in FARSHUN, Balenciaga is once again taking the absolute piss with a towel skirt.Myf is banging on about “mewing” (she’ll explain), why Zan has watched and loved the new doco on Donna Summer.Show notes:ARIAs wrap: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-11-15/arias-2023-key-moments-performances-winners/103110316Troye Sivan x Timothee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5xpQQQIHhY&ab_channel=TroyeSivanVideosGrammy nominations: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/nov/10/grammy-nominations-2024-women-sza-taylor-swiftJared Leto: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/nov/10/jared-leto-attention-seeker-empire-state-buildingBobby Berk departs: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-11-14/fab-five-netflix-queer-eye-bobby-berk-announces-departure/103102420Patrick Dempsey in People: https://slate.com/human-interest/2023/11/patrick-dempsey-sexiest-man-alive-2023-people.htmlKim Kardashian on GQ: https://au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/kim-kardashian-slammed-after-fronting-gqs-men-of-the-year-cover-034323719.htmlThe Selfie camera: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/11/iphone-15-pro-max-selfie-camera/675971/Towel Skirt: https://www.tiktok.com/@highsnobiety/video/7300926057127906603Donna Summer doco: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQXInltKe8E&ab_channel=HBOBang Back to us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is an ABC podcast, produced by Double J.
