I'm tired of people talking about metaphorical witch hunts. Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, Inquisitors and authors of this episode's book, had a much better idea. The Malleus Maleficarum (translated as 'The Hammer of the Witches) is a witchhunting manual, first published in 1486, in part because Kramer led an unsuccessful Inquisition in Innsbruck, where he was prevented from condemning a number of women to death. American Psycho: chances are, you've seen the film and know plenty of Patrick Bateman quotes. But have you read the book? Published in 1991 and written by Bret Easton Ellis, this novel is an extremely funny satire of modern consumerism, as well as being stomach-churningly disgusting in many places.
