Make BOLD Moves
Today, we're talking about the leadership, feelings and work required to make a big shift. We explore the different stages of competence (unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, unconscious competence/mastery). And, talk about moving through them to make bold moves.
"The only thing that keeps us from where we are today and the thing we want that's over there is the fact that to get from here to there is relatively uncomfortable. We lose that connection to our mastery."
A few questions to explore after listening to the episode:
>> Where are you currently feeling unconscious incompetence? (Those places where you don't even know what's going on but you wish you did.)
>> Where are you in conscious competence doing something that you don't ever want to do again? Where can you drop something that you're actually pretty good at because it's not what you're here to do?
>> Where are you going to celebrate your unconscious competence or mastery? What are you good at that you don't even have to think about? (It comes naturally to you and maybe other people notice or even point it out.)
Main takeaway: big shifts and bold moves are uncomfortable. But, most of us want an outcome and a life worth feeling incompetent for little bursts of time.
Give yourself a break. And, let's make BOLD moves!

Disruption IS Alignment
When I was hosting the Disruption Sessions earlier this fall and was talking about disruption and disorientation, I was reminded that not everybody wants to lean into that. As human beings, we like to stay comfortable and safe.
But, here's the thing... disruption is actually a way to alignment - which most of us DO want.
If we want something new or to do what is good and right, that usually requires some sort of disruption, disorientation, discomfort. We can't get there by clinging to what we already know.
"The work we're asking people to do (as mentors and coaches) is to step up to the plate of their lives." It's not easy but it's required.
I want to honor that. Yes, it's work - but it's worth it.
What are you pushing on or bristling up against currently? I want to know. DM me on Instagram if you'd like to discuss further. I'm always here for that! (@caryngillen)

I'm Here to Disappoint
What would it be like to not betray yourself?
Allow me to give you some context... I was listening to Brene Brown recently, and she was talking about how we will often betray ourselves before disappointing others.
This is a big one for me. I have definitely grown in this area but there are still times and spaces it sneaks in. I'm wondering if it's the same for you?
So, what if we tried that on this week? What if, before any response or action we took, we stopped to consider is this FOR me or is this a betrayal of myself?
Let's see what feels hard, what feels easy and what has just become a habit.
Can't wait to hear what comes up for you around this! DM me on Instagram to let me know.
And, don't forget to take care of you - the real you.

The Full Expression of BEing Human
"What have you been denying in yourself that it’s time to put out in the world?" - Dr. Melissa Bird
In this week's episode, I have the privilege of speaking with Clairvoyant Life Coach, Public Speaker and Founder of Natural Born Rebel, Dr. Melissa Bird.
We get into a lot of different things but the overarching theme is that most of us could improve at BEing human - admitting who we truly are in ALL of our big-ness and/or processing authentic emotions. And, how that's not a "bad" thing.
- We talk about how to show up in life (and business), right at the level you’re at. Being human, and being who YOU are, without having to fix it, plump it or shrink it.
- We talk about toxic gratitude. (You've got to listen to hear more about this one - it's important!)
- We talk about investing in our businesses - how and why we don't have to do all the things on our own. And, why the growth often comes when we're not.
- We talk about how we misunderstand the face of poverty, particularly in the US. And, why it's important to support small and local businesses. (I told you, we get into ALL the things!)
Do yourself a favor, listen to this episode and give yourself some space to process whatever comes up for you. It'll be worth it. And, if you need another human to bounce some things off of or to just affirm your human BEing, reach out to me on Instagram (@caryngillen). I'm always here for that!
Some questions to ask yourself...
- "What 'too’s' have I been called? And, how have I believed them?"
- "I'm here now. Clearly, this is for me. So, what’s here?"
- "Where am I clenching? How can I unclench?"
- "Do I allow myself to wail?"
- "What’s my reaction to poverty? Where can I let some oxygen and some humanity in - and just look at that, to see what’s there?"

Remember Why You're Out There
Running a successful and sustainable business can be A LOT. But, in our focus on learning and doing all of the things, I really want to make sure we don't miss the point... We are here to connect with each other.
Sending a weekly newsletter, posting on social, recording a podcast, building a Facebook group, etc. are all ways for us to multiply our time and impact. AND, for the people who come across these things to establish a connection/begin to know, like and trust us.
These tools allow us to connect with a large number of people at once BUT we are still talking to individuals.
So, the next time you show up, ENGAGE - don't just check the box! (I'm calling myself out here too.)
Remember WHY you're out there.

Today's guest, Sarah Selecky, is an author and the founder of the Sarah Selecky Writing School.
Listen in as she talks about:
- how creativity is magic
- ways of being present in your life/work

- why slow is smooth, and smooth is fast
- how it can (and should) feel like you're "breaking your life" to make space for writing and creating sometimes
Sarah's voice is so calm and soothing.
But the passion with which she speaks, AND the way in which she makes creativity accessible, makes this a must-listen episode.
It feels like hearing a great story, taking a business masterclass, and enjoying a relaxing meditation all-in-one.
"These divisions that our culture presents around making art and living a good life are false." - Sarah Selecky

Bringing Your WHOLE Self to Your Business
It is not only allowed but required that you bring your WHOLE self to your business.
In so many ways, we can make ourselves wrong for who we are in business. But, we don't have to.
You don't have to do it how anyone else does. And, it doesn't have to be a total slog.
If you were to open up the door and let all of you in, what would happen?
Why not do what feels better if you're still gonna get the same (or an even better) result?
Pop on over to Instagram and let me know your takeaways. What does this open up for you???

Inclusive Design + Accessibility
1 in 4 people, globally, has a disability or challenge that prevents them from accessing internet content equally. That means 25% of people get stuck at the welcome mat and can't even ENTER your digital house! That's a big deal.
This week, I have the privilege of speaking with Creative Director and Inclusive Design Consultant, Bex McKnight. She and her team at McKnight Inclusive Design just redid the caryngillen.com website so I KNOW she's good at what she does! And, I'm beyond excited to share her expertise with you.
- She gives an incredible distinction between equal and equitable - if you need a word picture that will stick with you, this is it!
- She talks about the different elements of inclusive design and accessibility.
- She gives specific examples of things that are problematic and some action items that you can do RIGHT NOW (without any additional resources) to "be a better human".
"You never know who you are excluding." - Bex McKnight
Listen to this episode to start where you're at and do what you can to invite more people in and make sure you're serving them well.
"The most meaningful world is one we can all access." - Bex McKnight
Let's build it together.
