051: 5th Generational Warfare Myth and Reality
Talk Back to MeThe Term "5th Generational Warfare" gets used more and more as our ability to evaluate information continues to degrade, institutionally and culturally. Often that intellectual degradation is seen as evidence of deliberate attempts to sabotage a society, but we ask the question, is that sufficient evidence? What are the other generations of warfare? How did we get here? What are the tactics and tools? What about a justified application of war? These questions and more serve as the topic of this episode of the REDACTED Culture Cast, and part of our mission to re-engage the intellect in how we understand conflict, violence, and Human Rights. 050: Jack Potter of Guerrilla Tactical on Homesteading, Self Sufficiency, and Who Gun Culture is For
Talk Back to MeFrom training and traveling around the world, to working towards self-sufficiency, Jack Potter brings a conversation to the table which straddles adventure and homesteading. Indicative of the shift in culture, his approach to being self-reliant differs from the self-isolating zeitgeist of the past. As the founder of Guerrilla Tactical, Jack Potter talks about how he sees the culture we are actively participating in and what that means to him. Guerrilla Tactical also represents a certain breed of the American Dream which starts in a Garage, not a Think Tank. While it's not his experience which validates his approach, it serves as context for what we are concerned about. 049: Fred Baker of Counting Coup Tactical
Talk Back to MeIn this conversation with Fred of Counting Coup Tactical, we address how so much of Gun Culture has been using capability as a vector for evaluating the morality of the subject. This leads to a discussion on how the increased capabilities of both individuals and government has opened up new moral quandaries. At what cost? At what cost do we maintain liberty or safety, and are they at odds? The capability of government organizations to collect data expands, it also leads to new question on who are of interest, and what that entails when it comes to a society which at least claims to value freedom. In the second half we look at what the long term goal of Gun Culture could be. 048: What Propaganda Teaches Us About Virtue
Talk Back to MeBuried in each explanation are a series of assumptions about the world we live in. For example, mystics of propaganda speak as if all of society's problems can be boiled down to someone with power, be it government or a microphone, manipulating an otherwise good-willed populous. The assumption buried within is the idea that there is a fundamental difference between the propagandist, and the population. A distinction is made at the metaphysical level, which is buried within the compelling argument that "the people" are too easily controlled by propaganda. While making an overt argument THAT propaganda has its effect on people, it imbeds a subtle implied argument HOW that happens. As a result, buried in a framework of the world we live in, the distinction between value and context is poorly plastered over. From this description we can see the relationship between the experience of professional warfighters and the values imbedded within Gun Culture. 047: Collin Underdahl on Education, Knowledge, and Wisdom
Talk Back to MeDrawing a distinction between three terms often intermingled, we discuss what the difference between Education, Knowledge, and Wisdom looks like in Gun Culture with Collin Underdahl. Returning to the show for another conversation, the question also extends into how we think of the society we live in. Where does achievement fit in the mix? Experience? How do we evaluate our own choices and decisions going forward? We would encounter these concepts in gun culture, be it veteran status, courses taken, functioning as an instructor, or choosing a tool, how we think about these concepts will play out, and for the better when we consider them accurately. 046: Jared of Orion Training Group on the New Ethic of Instructors
Talk Back to MeNot long ago, it was common for Instructors to look to lawyers to inform them of the ethical framework they were expected to teach. But today, Gun Culture is much more concerned with both the moral and legal question when it comes to the use of Force. As Instructors have changed the material and methods of teaching available to open enrollment courses, some of this can be attributed to the above-noted shift in the community. As the head of Orion Training Group, Jared Arceneaux returns to the REDACTED Culture Cast to discuss the finer details and argue for what he believes is the appropriate ethical framework for instruction. Gun Culture is more than possessing an item, but instead implies a sense of action and pursuit of virtue. 045: The Human Right to Privacy
Talk Back to MePrivacy may just be more important than the Right to Bear Arms. From brigands in the streets, to the halls of Congress, the term 'Rights' gets thrown around so flippantly that we should wonder if it retains any true value. In contrast, such unsanctimonious use can also be seen as tribute to the weight the concept of a right imposes on reality. As our world changes through the amoral development of technology, to the morally dubious encroachment of a surveillance state, it is not only what we think, but how we think about what we believe that will have implications on the world to come. Privacy is something that can be threatened, but why we value it must be called into question. What we believe about morality, and the rights of the individual will have long-tail impact on what we argue to be true. 044: Scott Chapman on Humanization Before, During, and After War
Talk Back to MeWe often hear about the battlefield of ideas, and that the Academy is where people may contend with and present their beliefs, theories, and arguments without fear of censorship or retaliation. Whether or not that was ever a reality may never be known, but what is certain, is that the Ivory Tower has not been operating by this standard for some time. One example of where this goes wrong is when the ideas of people who, isolated from skin in the game, begin making the rules for those who have to live them, such as the Rules of Engagement. Another example is when it becomes the opinion of the academics, that soldiers are trained to be automatons, built by the institution to dehumanize their opponents. Scott Chapmen entered Ranger Battalion just before September 11th, 2001. More than 20 years later, after a great variety of experiences, he has begun writing about what he saw in those experiences, and in his own self. 042: What We Can Learn from Left Wing Violence
Talk Back to MeWhile politicians and pundits make a scene calling this or that person violent, as a form of implying moral status, we take a look at various pieces of contemporary Left-Wing (American) literature to glean lessons on how we think about the subject. As difficult as it is to keep politics out of any conversation, this solo presentation addresses what we can learn about the ethical (note, not legal advice) use of force, through considering how these left wing authors implicitly categorize the people they write about in terms of metaphysics, when they should be doing so only ethically. From the Rules of Engagement, to Escalation of Force, we consider what conditions are necessary for the ethical use of force in self defense. The left, in this case, has definitively embraced the concept of premptive self defense, which quickly invites the straw man arguments perhaps rightly thrown at it. But, in order to properly argue against it, we must understand the statements implied, as well as why they are incorrect, in order to do what is ethical.
