About This Episode: In his newest book, 'The College Cartel', Sahaj Sharda is starting an essential debate about the monopolistic greed of the Ivy League colleges and other elite schools. ​​In recent years, elite colleges have been sued for price-fixing, sued for discrimination in admissions, and scandalized by Varsity Blues. Sahaj's book is both an exploration of these scandals and an analysis of the underlying force creating them: an artificial scarcity of elite seats. A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, America's top-ranked high school, Sahaj noticed early on that plenty of intelligent students who can obviously handle the rigor at elite colleges are rejected every year. Having been an undergraduate student at Georgetown when the Varsity Blues scandal broke out, Sahaj further witnessed a fellow classmate's parents sentenced to jail. ​​Seeing these things, Sahaj was forced to question why. 'Why don't elite colleges want more students?' '​​Why do elite colleges refuse customers?' ​​As Sahaj explains in his book, the answer lies in an elite college seat cartel which has been successful at restricting enrollment across America's top colleges. Against students, this college cartel has falsely increased prices through scarcity and also outright price-fixing. ​​Sahaj is attending Columbia Law School's, where he will focus on antitrust laws so that he can fight the economically abusive use of monopoly power by big companies in higher education and beyond. About This Episode: Dr. Watson became Clinical Director and owner of Associated Psychological Health Services Inc. in 2005, a local outpatient clinic operating for nearly 30 years. He added the R.E.A.Ch. -V.I.P. program (Recovery of Emotionally Abused Children with Volunteers in Psychotherapy), modeled by the late Dr. Kevin McCready (R.E.A.Ch.) and Richard Schulman, Ph.D. (V.I.P), whereby those without any financial support could obtain free clinical services for volunteering their time in the nonprofit local community. Dr. Watson is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, holds a Master’s Degree from the California School of Professional Psychology-Fresno and a Doctorate in Clinical Depth/Dynamic Psychology (2002) from CSPP-Alliant University. Dr. Watson also is a former Chief Supervising Psychologist-Executive for the State of WI-Dept. of Corrections-KMCI (2011-2013), and was responsible for oversight of all mental health services for a medium secure institution of approximately 1,200 inmates. Dr. Watson has provided testimony to the Food and Drug Administration regarding lack of effectiveness and safety of ECT, and upon SSRI induced suicide. He was an invited guest speaker and lecturer to the Congress of Mexico (speaking upon the link between psychiatric medications and violence in children and teens). Dr. Watson specializes in integrating evidence based practices, and uses an integrated psycho-social-biological integrated model when lecturing, testifying and treating patients.
