691: Stolen Youth, Big Member, & Dinner at the Zoo

Today's episode is a doozy! Sarah is feeling a little non-commital about making plans, but we're determined to start thinking ahead and making plans to look forward to. We can't let the pandemic ruin the future anymore. We hear about the Stolen Youth documentary about the Sarah Lawrence mind-control cult, and Sarah is having a completely physical reaction about their mental hell. We learn the purpose of beards, and it turns out they are not for keeping your chinny-chin-chins warm. Sarah discusses a zookeeper in Mexico who is accused of EATING the zoo animals. Plus, we debate which zoo animal we would eat if we were in a pinch.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/691-692Join our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

690: Gunther's Millions, Unmasking Autism, & Mary Queen of Scots

We have a rebuttal to a keyboard warrior who took issue with our commentary on Hitler's medical history, which is a sentence we never thought we'd write. Susie explains why discussing shame is critical to understanding human behavior. We learn about a dog who inherited $500M when his owner died, and why things are not at all what they appear to be. The documentary Gunther's Millions tells the story of this dog (and it's heirs), his handler, and the strange way depression, a search for meaning, and tax law all play into the story of this fortune. Susie discusses the Volcano documentary that tells the story of a popular tourist attraction that seemed like controled risk turned into a life or death situation for some unsuspecting people on vacation. We talk about a book about autism that argues for the public perception to shift instead of resorting to "traumatic" behavioral therapy for people on the spectrum. We debate the word "trauma" and how it is being used more frequently now as a synonym for discomfort. We hear about scholars who have finally decoded Mary Queen of Scots's letters sent from prison after her cousin Queen Elizabeth I imprisoned her. Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/689-690Join our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

689: Elderly Sarah, We Need to Talk About Ezra, & Zoo Mania

We discuss how our problems suddenly seem bearable when we consider switching them for someone else's. Sarah describes her Valentine's Day surprise from Eli and why not everyone should be cracking jokes on a microphone like we do. Sarah got a physical and it turns out she's 100% that old lady, and she does not appreciate the insinuation that just because she's old she's not a big old slut. We discuss how our vaginas are still mysterious even though we've had them our whole lives. Hear why Sarah is mad as a hornet about a comic book movie coming out, and why men seem to live without consequences. We discuss some crazy things happening at zoos, and how if you mess with a tiger you might get the fangs.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/689-690Join our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

688: Baywatch Body, Breastfeeding Debate, & Disability Fetish

Susie breaks down the Pam Anderson documentary (produced and directed by our buddy, Ryan White) and the ways she represents the dynamic between men and women culturally. The documentary looks at Pam as a sex symbol, cultural icon, and reflection of gender dynamics in the West. Sarah shares a shocking story about a Baywatch actor who insulted her at a club many years ago. We hear about a woman who was ordered to stop breastfeeding so her ex-husband could maintain equal custody, and we debate whether the judge did the right thing. Sarah explains how women can wield their motherhood as a way to leverage power. Susie talks about a woman in a wheelchair who wants social media platforms to do more to protect her from people with a "disability fetish," and we discuss why we think she's being unrealistic about life online. We learn about the "millennial pause" and "Gen Z shake" and why different generations behave differently online. Plus, we hear the history of digital Easter eggs and how they make people feel superior.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/687-688Join our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

687: Sarah's Marriage Proposal, Divorce Debate, & Buried Alive

Happy Valentine's Day to all who celebrate--and we hope you do because love is the most important thing in the world! And to get in the spirit, Susie is trying to convince Sarah to propose to Eli. Hear what she has to say about that idea, and her answer may suprise you. We discuss a woman who got divorced, but chose to keep her ex-husband's name, and some people are worked up about it. And we consider why the last name debate is so fraught and complicated. We learn about a study where men had to identify parts of a woman's anatomy (including a part that doesn't even exist), and they were very confident and very wrong. Susie explains why she still struggles with the purity culture mindset she grew up in, and how it informs her views on sexuality, women, and modesty. We discuss two examples of people who were wrongly declared dead, and how Susie's fears of being buried alive have been triggered.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/687-688Join our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

686: Mind over Murder, LEGO Pain, & Prison Rules

Hear about a docuseries called Mind Over Murder where six people were wrongfully accused of the rape and murder of a woman after five of them confessed to the crime. We explore why people would say they did something they had nothing to do with, why we're all at risk of the same strange weakness, and why humans never realize their own fragility. We discuss a woman who was found in and rescued from a storm drain not once, not twice, but thrice in the last two years, and we theorize what the hell is going on with her. Susie describes the unraveling of the Murdaugh family who were among the most powerful and elite in their town for 100 years, and why, after a boating accident, it all went wrong very quickly. We explain why the Stanford Prison Experiment might not be accurate despite being the most famous psych experiment of all time. Susie describes why the pain of stepping on a LEGO is worse than glass or fire, and Sarah's got a theory about why it might be an emotional pain as well as a physical pain. Plus, we learn why people need subtitles now more than ever before despite "improvements" in technology. 685: Marie Kondo Mess, Men Problems, & Robot Apocalypse

Hear why Susie plans on becoming a chart-topping singer. Sarah and Susie are planning their ski adventure and Susie really hopes it doesn't involve any...skiing. Susie decides we need a "swear jar" for every time Sarah says the word "Eli," and Sarah is kinda freaked out. We hear about the evolution of Marie Kondo, and theorize why she is doing an about-face on her rigid tidying rules. We discuss an article that asks the question, "What's the matter with men," and consider some societal factors that may be causing men to become less educated, employed, and emotionally stable. Sarah met someone from the future, sort of, and now she's realizing that some of the things he talked to her about are actually coming true. But it's not SpOoOOooOky so much as wild. So turns out, the apocalypse might not be all bad after all. 684: Psychic Friends, Amber Alerts, & Tunnel of Hate

Susie informs us about some big changes in the bowling world that bowling alley owners are thrilled about, but professional bowlers think is a real gutter ball. And Sarah claims Eli almost went pro in bowling. We discuss the documentary about Miss Cleo, the "Jamaican" psychic who convinced white people she had the magical ability to answer hundreds of phone calls at once. We learn about the fallout since the Hillsong docuseries came out, and why there's "a lot of money to be made off of poverty." We find out how the Amber Alert came to be, and Sarah is shocked to learn it was named after a person, not a color. Susie describes the conditions for a 200-mile marathon that takes place in a tunnel. We theorize what type of person willingly participates in something so torturous. 683: Mutant Plants, Metal Coke, & Manly Cars

Today we find out about a type of plant that knows how to count (???), but its plant cousin is a dummy that doesn't know how (so Susie thinks it's going to be a goner). Hear about a documentary that Sarah participated in, but she ended up on the cutting room floor. We discuss ways that humans recover from shame, embarrassment, and, well, being human. Sarah explains why McDonald's Coca-Cola tastes better than other Coke. We learn about a study that determined whether men with smaller penises really do prefer flashy sports cars. We discuss a study that found that people who have trouble sleeping are far more likely to believe in the paranormal (e.g. aliens, ghosts, demons), and the theories for why that might be. Plus, we talk about "fubbing," which is snubbing someone by looking at your phone, and why it's having a huge impact on relationships. 682: Cougars, Conmen, & the Curse of Chippendales

Susie can't quit thinking about the Bernie Madoff docuseries and his $65 BILLION (with a B!) scam that he ran for 40 years. She thinks we can learn a lot about non-violent sociopaths from his example. She also can't quit thinking about Chippendales (not to be confused with Chip and Dale. And Chip and Dale are not to be confused with Alvin and the Chipmunks) exotic male dancers. She watched the Curse of Chippendales, and apparently those guys have really been through the wringer. You'd never know it from Susie's focus, which is their feet of all things. Sarah is really into this story as her transition to cougar is almost complete. Susie is mad that Instagram even makes users censor breasts in works of art regardless of how "realistic" the body parts are. Is there no limit to the fear of the boob? And we discuss whether you can separate the art from the artist when they've done something despicable like Bill Cosby. Susie attempted to do that by watching an old clip of his stand-up, and she was distrurbed by her reaction. Finally, we learn about a romance novelist who faked her own death and then came back to life and wanted everyone to be fine with it.
