755: Sensitive People, Crime Con, & Australian Hillbillies

The podcast discusses topics such as visiting a tourist trap in Boston, the impact of wearing noise-cancelling headphones on mental health, the history of Dr. Brommer and his soap business, the debate surrounding Crime Con, a wild documentary about a murder mystery in the Australian outback, and the preservation methods for founding documents at the National Archives.

754: Misphonia, Taylor Swift's NFL, & Platonic Proposals

Sarah thinks something fishy is happening with British Bakeoff, and she needs answers. Sarah is so enamored with Taylor Swift's ability to rile up the football boys that she is considering becoming a Swiftie or AT LEAST unmuting her on spotify. This is big news. We were happy for the seal who escaped from his enclosure at a New York zoo. Or was it a sea lion? And we found out the difference between a seal and a sea lion (and what the heck is the deal with walruses?) while we were at it. We discuss the inmate who recently escaped from a Pennsylvania prison, and Susie seriously freaks Sarah out when she finds out what he did when he broke into someone's house. It's some horror movie sh*t. Susie also explains why the police and SWAT team members who caught him were a little too proud of themselves and really the credit should go to someone else altogether. We hear what the diamond industry is cooking up to try to sell more diamonds now that fewer people are getting married, but we think their idea is a dud. Susie thinks Gen Z might go for it and gets all judge-y about it, but Sarah reminds her of all the dumb things our generations have done. We debate an article by David Brooks which encouraged people to focus on marriage rather than their careers, and Susie explains why he's seen as a conservative in sheep's clothing. Susie shares a story about a recent night out that almost turned into another addition to her year of bad luck, but this story is a real BCP emotional roller coaster.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/friendship-diamonds-lifesavers-zoo-escapeeJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Get an extended 30 day free trial when you go to https://www.dipseastories.com/braincandyVisit https://ritual.com/braincandy to start Ritual or add HyaCera to your line up today!Get started at https://www.chime.com/braincandyHead to https://www.smalls.com/braincandy and use promo code BRAINCANDY at checkout for 50% off your first order PLUS free shipping! See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

753: Hotline Heroes, Skating Scandal, & Disco Sucks

Today we reminisce about the Challengemania Hall of Fame and Sarah's induction speech. We hear about the Harley & Katya documentary which chronicled a competitive figure skating duo and the untimely demise of the female skater. We discuss how concussions and injuries from the ice, the difficulties of competing, and the pressure on young athletes contribute to mental health concerns for the skaters. Susie thinks there's still time for Sarah to become a competitive bobsledder, but Sarah isn't so sure. We hear about the man who created the famous and calamitous "disco sucks" event at the professional baseball game in 1979, why the organizer regrets it, and how the people who stormed the field might have something in common with the January 6 insurrectionists. We discuss a study that shows why sleeping with your partner's clothing could help you sleep better even if you're not aware it's theirs. Susie describes what it's like to work a suicide hotline, why a lot of people call who are looking for love, friendship, or romance, how the operators assess risk, and why it's a thankless job. We laugh about Sarah's inability to "wind down" on a phone call and how she realized she has a very annoying habit in social settings. And our minds are blown when we learn the difference between chicken strips and chicken tenders. Who knew? This is the BCP content we all need.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/friendship-diamonds-lifesavers-zoo-escapeeJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Get an extended 30 day free trial at https://www.dipseastories.com/braincandyGet 30% off during your first month at https://ritual.com/braincandyGet started at https://www.chime.com/braincandyHead to https://www.smalls.com/braincandy and use promo code BRAINCANDY at checkout for 50% off your first order PLUS free shipping!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

752: Lion Dads, Missing Jet, & Mexican Alien

Sarah is still obsessing about predator animals. She has developed a real affinity for polar bears and thinks lion dads are really not pulling their weight. They have manes and a roar, and that's about it. They're all hype! But it was great to hear that according to her, cats are great and dogs are "nasty." We discuss whether learning more about animals makes us more or less likely to be vegetarians. Elephants are smarty pants and walruses are, and I quote, "f*cking idiots." Sarah talks about the military jet that went missing and her theory about what really happened. But she was shocked to hear that the pilot made a 911 call and he didn't sound upset that he was EJECTED from the jet. We laugh about the "alien" they discovered in Mexico and then we get worried that we're going to look like real a-holes if they find out this thing actually is an alien or as Sarah thinks "is from another dimension." We learn why Gen Z does not want to be criticized at work and they don't even want "feedback," so now managers are reframing the messages by calling it "feedfoward." After we lost our minds about how stupid this is, we discuss how they say it's because they don't want to live in the past, but Susie points out that this is hypocritical since all they ever want to talk about is their past "trauma." Susie is full of BCP hot takes today. 751: Super Models, Surfer Culture, & Stinky French

Susie gives a report on the Super Models documentary and the cultural moment that supermodels represented in the 80s and 90s, how they discuss aging, and why Susie is critical of younger models. It even inspired one of Susie's famous hot takes where she criticizes a nepo baby who "can't walk." We learn about the woman who was hired to fix Airbnb's party problem and programmed an algorithm to sniff out whether people are going to throw a party at the house. We discuss the recent study that found that patients of female surgeons have more favorable outcomes and we theorize why that might be. We debate why anyone would want a male OB-GYN, and how even TSA agents take liberties with their "authority." Susie discusses a scholarly article on why French people were not into personal hygiene and how the stereotype about them is apparently true or at least was far into the 1900s. Sarah, however, is very defensive because she is a stinky woman and thinks Susie should give the French a break. We learn how men muscled women out of surfing, why the sport is changing slowly, and how Sarah had a secret surfing career.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/scary-feedback-elephant-names-female-surgeonsJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Go to https://www.greenchef.com/60braincandy and use code 60braincandy to get 60% off plus free shipping!Get $30 off the first box - PLUS free Croissants in every box - when you go to https://wildgrain.com/braincandy to start your subscription!Control Body Odor ANYWHERE with @lumedeodorant and get $5 off off your Starter Pack (that’s over 40% off) with promo code BRAINCANDY5 at https://lumepodcast.com! #lumepodSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

750: Snakes with Legs, Cheetah Paternity, & Helmets for Dummies

This episode is wild. First we're celebrating our 750th episode w/ a delicious cake from Kara McSweeney and Evanly Bakes. Mostly we realize how even after all these episodes of laughing and learning we still don't know anything. We hear all the fun facts Sarah picked up from one of her wild nature documentaries (we are pretty sure she was high when she watched it though). She claims hares are faster than cheetahs, and we have questions about the legitimacy of this race. We realize we know nothing about how twins are made and whether humans can have twins with two separate fathers naturally or whether it can only happen through in vitro fertilization. Sarah talks about a cannibal family that apparently is one the most important history lessons (only to her and some other people in California, but don't tell her that). She is warning people not to rely on AI to decide what to forage, and luckily Susie wouldn't forage if her life depended on it, so she's safe. We rage about the man who climbed a statue and broke its arm off and laugh about how we all would react if we were him. Humans are so dumb. Sarah gets mad about people who don't wear helmets and wonders what in the world they're thinking. People in the Philippines think they discovered a snake with legs (aka a lizard), but even though we're no David Attenborough, we cracked the case on what's really going on. Plus, Susie interviews J. Reuben Appelman about his new book While Idaho Slept about the murder of four young college students and the suspect who is going to trial. It's a fascinating and nuanced look at the crime and the alleged killer.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/yarn-facts-dont-trust-ai-feline-infidelityJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Get 20% OFF @honeylove by going to https://www.honeylove.com/braincandy! #honeylovepodFind your forever pieces @jennikayne and get 15% off with promo code BRAINCANDY at https://www.jennikayne.com/braincandy! #jennikaynepartnerHead to https://moshlife.com/braincandy to save 20% off plus FREE shipping on your first 6-count Trial Pack!Get $20 off your purchase of a Hatch Restore 2 and free shipping at https://www.hatch.co/braincandySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

749: Roman Empire, Therapist Sighting, & Breakup BTS

Sarah is getting into Tuesday's Sacrifice mode as the weather turns cool and the witchy vibes come alive. Susie has a sound board and uses it with abandon on this episode. We hear about the Team Foxcatcher documentary, and how it is the perfect combination of murder, sports, and an eccentric millionaire. We hear facts about crocheting that are surprisingly interesting and make Sarah want to bust out her knitting equipment and get to work on a scarf that looks like a snake ate a tennis ball. How often do you think about the Roman Empire? Well, evidently men think about it a lot and Susie has a theory about why and what the female equivalent is. And our minds are blown. Susie saw Adam's therapist out in the wild, so she has some questions for Sarah about why it is a big performance of silence and awkwardness when that happens, what therapists think when they see their clients, and why Susie is hoping she made a good impression. We discuss why men are getting weaker and now have the same grip strength as women their age. We explain why moving companies have insight into your relationships. Plus, Susie reveals why you should worry about sharing your data even if you "have nothing to hide."Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/yarn-facts-dont-trust-ai-feline-infidelityJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:You can grow thicker, healthier hair AND support our show by going to https://nutrafol.com and enter the promo code: BRAINCANDY to save $15 off your first month’s subscription!Control Body Odor ANYWHERE with @lumedeodorant and get $5 off off your Starter Pack (that’s over 40% off) with promo code: BRAINCANDY5 at https://lumepodcast.com! #lumepodCancel your unwanted subscriptions – and manage your money the easy way – by going to https://rocketmoney.com/braincandyGo to https://www.reliefband.com and use promo code: CANDY to receive 20% off plus free shipping!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

748: Brain Candy: The Musical, Ornamental Hermits, & the Good Wall

We didn't intend on this episode becoming a musical version of Brain Candy, but, boy oh boy, did we have a song in our hearts today. We apologize in advance. We learn what "ornamental hermits" are and find out why people were using them to gain social status centuries ago. Susie explains why Paris Hilton would've loved an ornamental hermit. We hear why Sarah started loving Veggie Tales as an adult and Susie is singing about an astronomer/physicist. We laugh about the couple who bulldozed through the Great Wall of China, and wonder what exactly it is that they were trying to accomplish. We love a good shortcut, but this sounds ridiculous. Susie gets real confused about the 7 Wonders of the World because it turns out there are more than seven and some of them are natural, some of them are manmade, and some of them aren't really that wondrous. Sarah explains why the rules have changed in New York and now there will be a lot of people who will be sharing AirBnBs with an extra roommate. Finally, we learn what "hot bedding" is, and it turns out it's not as sexy as it sounds.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/cave-rescue-bear-cam-saves-life-new-airbnb-rulesJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Head to https://www.smalls.com/braincandy and use promo code: BRAINCANDY at checkout for 50% off your first order PLUS free shipping!Get 20% OFF @honeylove by going to https://www.honeylove.com/braincandy! #honeylovepodHead to https://laundrysauce.com/braincandy and use promo code: BRAINCANDY at checkout for 15% off!Right now, you can get an exclusive 20% off your first order at https://thrivecausemetics.com/braincandySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

747: Hamster Wheel, Near Death, & Scouts Honor

Sarah shares a disturbing and wild experience recently in which she believes she was drugged at a bar, and how it's affected her behavior. Susie talks about a man who is trying to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a--wait for it--hamster wheel. We learn why this is his "dream," why he keeps getting stopped by the authorities, and what we think is inspiring his quest. We also hear about the American caver who got stuck in a cave in Turkey and had to be rescued because of gastrointestinal issues. We discuss near death experiences, and why one man who studies them is convinced there is life after death. Plus, we learn about "fear death experiences," and what's behind life-flashing-before-your-eyes in those moments of distress. Susie talks about the Scout's Honor documentary on the Boys Scouts abuse allegations. And Sooz Reviews the Never Let Him Go docu-series about a mysterious death of an American PhD student, and how his brother took on the job of investigating it, and why it took 30 years to solve it. We also hear about BS High, which is about a completely made up high school football team that ended up playing on ESPN. A lost hiker was rescued thanks to a bear cam in Alaska and the people who watch it for fun.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/cave-rescue-bear-cam-saves-life-new-airbnb-rulesJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Get an extended 30 day free trial when you go to https://www.dipseastories.com/braincandyGet $20 off the test when you go to https://modernfertility.com/braincandyThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. 746: Book Blurbs, Plastic Plants, & Rigged Ratings

Susie tried to send Sarah a gift and it went terribly wrong. We find out why Susie and Sarah have very different relationships with their trainers and Sarah almost had a comically bad run-in with a cactus. We learn why online ratings are no longer helpful due to "data panhandling." Sarah shares why book blurbs are useless and definitely "inspiring and illuminating." Sarah wants to ban all reviews of any kind. She wants a free for all situation instead. We couldn't help but talk about the recent incident on an airplane where they had to turn the whole thing around because somebody had explosive you know what. But not to be outdone, Sarah tells a story about someone at her doctor's office that left a big mess on the floor, and it wasn't who you might think.
