When should you consider a Caribbean medical school?
"If we want to achieve a physician workforce that mirrors our population, medical schools must collectively understand that we have created an admissions system that selects against Latinx and BIPOC students. We need a new system. But a new admission system will not be enough. More medical students of color, while a start, is not the complete answer: We need more doctors of color." What you need to know about sensory processing disorders
"Understanding and recognizing sensory processing issues may help improve functioning and quality of life for many individuals, starting with children in school. While many are preparing for back to school, it is important for parents, teachers, health care providers, guardians, and policymakers to be aware that millions need funding to get the care they need to succeed." Bulletproof backpacks: There's more we can do
"As a parent of elementary school children, every mass shooting, particularly ones killing school children like in Uvalde, jolts my doing-the-mom-thing-just-keep-busy-can't-stop denial. On the last day of school before summer vacation, when the bus doors squeaked open, and my kids hopped off, I experienced a momentary sense of relief. They were safe for one more day, at least from school shootings. I hugged my kindergartener and patted the head (that's all I'm allowed to do) of my fifth grader. Now that a new school year is looming, it's all I can do not to click on the article about bulletproof backpacks." Time constraints in physical therapy
"Picture this. A patient in a hospital or rehab facility has just finished exercising with therapy. He is thirsty, and he thinks he might as well ask for a snack now because he will be hungry in 30 minutes. His therapist sets him up in his wheelchair (brakes locked), tray table with all necessities positioned in front of him, with his call bell within reach. As she approaches the door to leave, she turns and asks, 'Is there anything else I can do for you?' The patient nods and asks for a refill of his water cup and some peanut butter crackers. The therapist grimaces. What should she do?" Hannah T. Todd is a physical therapist. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "A pervasive culture of time constraints in health care." Effective doctors need to be challenged
"Empathy, intelligence, and commitment are crucial traits every doctor must have to succeed. However, there is one trait that stands above the rest. One of the most important aspects of an effective doctor is the desire to be challenged and overcome difficult situations. I feel I've exemplified that throughout my life. Whether it be through those experiences, starting clubs, organizing teams, or helping those less fortunate than me, I haven't backed down." Jack Straub is a medical student. Let doctors in recovery be able to recover their careers
"During addiction, the brain becomes 'hijacked,' which then 'exaggerates the need for the drug and minimizes the dangers associated with the use of the drug.' This is so affirming because the chemicals in my brain told me I was going to die if the opioid was not available. It was a horrible and terrifying way to live." Jeffrey L. A physician's remedy for stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout
"My own burnout episode forced me into some heavy-duty soul-searching and serious reflection. I got lost in the world of seeing as many patients as possible, battling for more operating room time, and keeping up procedure volumes, prior authorizations, and electronic medical record keeping. I failed to notice early warning signs, including a change in my sleep patterns, apathy towards practice, and things I previously enjoyed in life, such as fitness and surfing. I was constantly irritable, especially toward those who were trying to help me. I started to slowly withdraw from those around me, and I actually started 'ghosting' people in my life, concerned I would bring others down, hoping things would eventually get better and just sort themselves out." Joseph D. Pianka is a gastroenterologist and author of It's All in Your Head. He shares his story and discusses his KevinMD article, "Self-discovery, health and fitness as the ultimate remedy for stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout." What anticipatory grief feels like
"I experienced many deaths when I was a nurse, from babies, kids, young adults, the elderly, and my own family. It was always heartbreaking, but I found that staying with the dying and the family and supporting them in what little way I could made the experience more bearable. I was not a hospice nurse, but I did not fear death, and I managed caring for the dying without difficulty. That does not make me an expert, and when my loved ones die, I'm not sure how I will act, but I'm hoping my experience can help those who have not experienced death very much, like Bill's children."
