Moving beyond weight-centered approaches in childhood obesity
In this episode, we sit down with guest Wendy Schofer, a pediatrician, to discuss the current state of childhood obesity and the need for a change in approach. Over the past two decades, the prevalence of children being diagnosed as overweight and obese has increased. However, the reasons behind this are still unknown. The conventional approach to childhood weight focuses on controlling it, but labeling it creates shame and fear, which can negatively impact mental health. Wendy advocates for shifting the focus from weight to improving the relationship with food, bodies, and our kids. Join the conversation and learn how to promote healthy lifestyles for children. Wendy Schofer is a pediatrician. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "It's time to stop focusing on family weight." The Podcast by KevinMD is brought to you by the Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience. With so many demands on their time, physicians today report record levels of burnout. Burnout is caused by many factors, one of which is clinical documentation. Studies indicate physicians spend two hours documenting care for every hour spent with patients. At Nuance, we are committed to helping physicians do what you love – care for patients – and spend less time on clinical documentation. The Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience, or DAX for short, is an AI-powered, ambient clinical intelligence solution that automatically captures patient encounters securely and accurately at the point of care. Physicians who use DAX have reported a 50 percent decrease in documentation time and a 70 percent reduction in feelings of burnout, and 83 percent of patients say their physician is more personable and conversational. Breaking the stigma: Making HIV and COVID screening routine in primary care
In this episode, we welcome clinical research assistant professor, Maranda C. Ward, to discuss the importance of routine screening for both HIV and COVID-19 in primary care. During the COVID pandemic, we became familiar with answering questions about our risk of exposure and symptoms, yet we have failed to make the same routine screening for HIV a priority. This lack of screening is due in part to the stigma associated with both diseases, which disproportionately impact minoritized populations. Maranda will share her research on how to reduce the stigma by routinizing screening in primary care, and the impact this could have in decreasing the number of new HIV infections and improving vaccination rates. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the important role of primary care in the fight against HIV and COVID-19. Maranda C. Ward is a clinical research assistant professor. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "Why HIV and COVID-19 vaccine screening should go together." The Podcast by KevinMD is brought to you by the Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience. Breaking the communication barrier: a survival guide for doctors, nurses, and patients
In this episode, we sit down with attorney and author Michael J. Grace to discuss his book, The Mumbo Jumbo Fix: A Survival Guide for Effective Doctor-Patient-Nurse Communication. This led him to start educating physicians and front office staff about effective communication and how it can prevent costly lawsuits. Michael's book addresses the issue of "siloed" communication education in health care, and provides an evidence-based guide for all three essential participants in the health care process: doctors, nurses, and patients. Empowering Type 2 diabetes patients with innovative insulin management tools
Our guest today is James Malone, an endocrinologist and health care executive with over 30 years of experience in the field of diabetes. James has seen firsthand the challenges that many people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) face when it comes to daily insulin management. Despite advancements in diabetes care over the years, the process of managing T2D remains just as complex and manual as it was when he first started practicing medicine. While the majority of people with diabetes live with T2D, most of the industry's innovation is focused on complicated systems for "power users" with type 1 diabetes (T1D). This leaves people with T2D struggling with the complex requirements of diabetes management with too few tools to help. James will discuss the difficulties of managing T2D, the importance of self-management, and the disparities that exist between T1D and T2D patients. He will also share his thoughts on what health care professionals and diabetes innovators can do to provide better care for the underrepresented and more prevalent diabetes population. So join us as we delve into the ongoing struggles faced by T2D patients and explore the steps to better care for this patient population. James Malone is an endocrinologist and chief medical officer, Bigfoot Biomedical. He shares his story and discusses his KevinMD article, "Lack of innovation is leading to disparities in diabetes care."
