Income investing in a world of higher inflation
The latest edition of the FTAdviser podcast examines the prospects for clients that have income as a priority, in a world of higher inflation. After a decade where most assets yielded very little, presenting a very particular challenge for income portfolio managers, 2022 has seen yields rise, but the capital values of many assets fall sharply, while inflation erodes the real value of the income generated. So how can investors with income as a priority construct a portfolio in this climate. And is it possible, for the first time in many years, to have a portfolio which generates both a positive capital return and a decent, and growing income yield?Joining David Thorpe, special projects editor at FTAdviser to discuss the topic are Robert Alster, chief investment officer at Close Brothers Asset Management, David Jane, multi-asset investor at Premier Miton, and Job Curtis, who runs the City of London investment trust. The FTAdviser Podcast is the podcast for financial advisers, brought to you by FTAdviser. How will consumer duty affect advisers' day-to-day role?
The new consumer duty, for which the rules were confirmed in July, won’t see a substantial amount of change for advisers, according to the guests on the latest FTAdviser Podcast.Speaking to deputy news editor Sonia Rach, this week's podcast guests, Simon Harrington, head of public affairs at Pimfa, and Mike Barrett, consulting director at the Lang Cat, said there was likely to be little change coming for advisers. In the discussion, they discussed the actual provision of giving advice, assessing suitability and how it differs from the RDR regulation previously. The discussion also touched upon the “theme of proportionality”, taking into consideration the impact the consumer duty will have on one-person advice firms. The FTAdviser Podcast is the podcast for financial advisers, brought to you by FTAdviser. Pimfa: Why simplified advice needs to feature in FCA handbook
There is no scope to water down advice but if the industry wants to be able to serve the 15mn people who need advice but don't get it, change is needed, says Simon Harrington. The head of public affairs at the adviser trade body says what is currently possible is rooted in 'handbook guidance', rather than the handbook itself, which makes it risky for advisers to experiment with simpler models. To find out how exactly Pimfa's simplified advice would work, and what are the chances of pushing it through the legislative and regulatory bodies, tune in to this week's FTAdviser In Focus podcast.
