Ep: 190 – Lions Look To The Buffalo Bills – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at the Detroit Lions win over the Arizona Cardinals, likely Ziggy Ansah’s last game for the Lions, the view on tanking for a draft pick, this season’s unsung heroes, a perspective on the season so far, a look ahead to the Bills, and Case takes us around the division. This episode is buff and moves like Zach Zenner. Try to keep up.
Detroit Lions Podcast Enjoys A Win
This week we begin by reviewing the Lions big win over the Arizona Cardinals. It wasn’t a fun game to watch. It was a defensive contest that the Lions were able to take away from the Cards on the road. The injured and beleaguered offense continued to underperform, but despite a number of injuries (including to Da’Shawn Hand and Ezekiel Ansah) the Lions prevailed. We discuss what Ziggy’s injury means and why this was likely his last game for the Lions. Tough way to go out.
The we talk about tanking and why it’s not a good idea, unless you want to lose a locker room. We understand where people’s hearts are, but you can’t neuter these cats, they are going to play until the final whistle. Unless you listen to the Freep. Then you think Coach Patricia lost them in July.
Thanks to a great post from /u/Waxxo we talk about some of the team’s unsung heroes of the 2018 season. It isn’t over, and there isn’t a postmortem to be written, but a few guys deserve recognition for their great work. We review their accomplishments and add a few of the Detroit Lions Podcast favorite players to the list.
Changes Have Been Happening In The Secondary
Shhh, don’t say anything, but the Lions secondary has been evolving. Tracy Walker has been increasing his snap count as Glover Quin’s drop. We noticed Glover showing some signs of age on the field early in the season, and look at that… The team has quietly been making changes and getting the heir apparent up to speed. They’ve been doing it to good effect as well.
Moving ahead, we take a look at the slow start to the season, and the ways in which the team has improved throughout the year. There’s another team who has been doing things in a similar fashion for a while. While many people (including us at time) had their toasters ready, maybe we can unplug them in the short term…
Lastly, Case takes us for a Detroit Lions Podcast favorite – a quick run ‘Around the Division’ where we discuss the Green Bay Packers coaching changes and how they might actually hurt the team. We move to the Minnesota Vikings, their injury situation, and the firing their OC. Then of course there’s the Chicago Bears and their love of sausages. We’ll chat about them as well.

Ep: 189 – Quick Takes: Talkin’ ‘Bout My Division – The Detroit Lions Podcast
This week on the Detroit Lions Podcast: Quick Takes, Chris and Jeff slide back into Barry White mode and take another look at possible replacement Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase. We also make the cast to trim Cooter early, and talk about the Lions playoff chances as well as where we want them to land in the division. No real college action this weekend, so we take a week off from the draft talk.
After that smooth jazz inspired intro we get right into it with a discussion about the case to trim Cooter prior to the end of the season. What does it mean, and what could it hurt? We also discuss how it’s worked for Cleveland.
Detroit Lions Podcast Moves A Coordinator Up The List
After last week’s discussion about Offensive Coordinators, Jeff Risdon has made some changes to his evaluation of Adam Gase. He makes the case for why Gas should be moving up the charts of possible replacements for Jim Bob Cooter. There are some good takes in here that you don’t want to miss.
Then we look ahead to the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals game. This is one that the Lions should walk away with pretty easily, if Matthew Stafford can play. Look for heads to roll if they don’t and Jim Bob Cooter is likely at the top of the list of those in jeopardy.
After that we take a broader look at the division and the Lions playoff chances. When you look at the remaining schedules, it’s still a real possibility that they make it, but they definitely have to play their best football against Minnesota. We also discuss whether we want the Lions to finish ahead of the pack in the division or not…
Chris and The Riz, together again on the Detroit Lions Podcast… It’s a weekly thing now…

Ep: 188 – Lions Look To The Arizona Cardinals – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at the Lions loss to the Los Angeles Rams, talk about what’s to be gained from giving Jim Bob Cooter his walking papers, and discuss Golden Tate, Kenny Golladay, and Zach Zenner. We also take a look ahead to the Arizona Cardinals.
This week we begin by taking a call for a favorite segment, “Puttin’ ’em on Blast”, and get a good critique of Jim Bob Cooter and his ability. It sparks a great conversation about what we could gain/lose from making a move at offensive coordinator at this point in the season. Chris is finally convinced that he’s ready to move on from Jim Bob at this point and talks about how we might even get better while also assessing a potential candidate to replace Cooter.
Detroit Lions Podcast Game Review
From there we take a look back at the game against the Los Angeles Rams. There were some high points, and some really great things to take away from that game, but it was also another opportunity squandered. Once again our Lions were able to create hope where we had none and dashed those hopes before we could realize greatness. For many, the Lions showed how to beat the Rams offense from the defensive side of the ball, but one of the keys to that is to have an offense. We missed on that one.
From there we discuss the Golden Tate trade with new perspective. Could it be the lack of remaining home games and the team’s lack of belief in JBC that led to the trade? Picking up a good draft spot while knowing the effect on the team from the fans’ perspective would be small? A fresh conspiracy to chew on at this point in the Lions season. We also discuss the effect of Tate’s departure and Marvin Jones injury on the production of Kenny Golladay. The effect is real and at the same time, some good experience being built at the same time. Lastly, we discuss the misuse of Zach Zenner in the Lions offense. The standard, “he’s doing well, better stop using him” problem from JBC.
Detroit Lions Wildcard Chances
We take a look at what it would take for the Lions to seal the deal for a Wildcard playoff position. Its not impossible, yet there is still work to be done. The biggest game is the next one, but in the scheme of things the Vikings at home could be the pivot point for their opportunity to make the dance.
Moving ahead, we take a look at the upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals and discuss where the team’s opportunities might lie.
Lastly, Case takes us for a quick run ‘Around the Division’ where we discuss the Green Bay Packers and their coaching changes, the Minnesota Vikings and their future financial issues, and The Chicago Bears and their love of sausages.

Ep: 187 – Detroit Lions & Los Angeles Rams Postgame Show – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Mike the Ambling Bastard conduct a therapy session for Lions fans. This after the Detroit Lions lost to the Los Angeles Rams today. This is a different kind of loss. We all expected a loss to the Rams, but the Lions created hope where there shouldn’t have been any. That helped ensure the loss hurt even more. The boys take your calls and discuss the game and what’s next.
The first half of this one went off pretty much as expected, though the defense stepped up and kept the Lions in the game. In the end the defense was the shining star of this game. Quandre Diggs was again a spark plug for the defense, and stood out as a player who never gives up. The Detroit Lions and Matt Patricia put on a clinic on how to stop the Los Angeles Rams – one which will be analyzed by the Rams opponents for the remainder of the season.
Detroit Lions Podcast Is Done With Cooter
On the other hand, Jim Bob Cooter’s offense put on a clinic showing how to beat the Detroit Lions. If you like runs up the middle on first down, you’ll love this game. It wasn’t until a the third quarter when the Lions threw a touchdown pass to Taylor Decker that the Lions finally started switching things up. When the did, they found great success. As soon as they found success, they went back to Jim Bob’s predictable conservative ways and the offense again stalled. There is an obvious gap between Coach Patricia and Coach Cooter. This will unwind itself in the offseason as Jim Bob won’t likely remain a part of the Lions staff more than 3 days after the end of the season. Things are bad enough that we just might see him gone ahead of that.
So we take your calls and conduct an intensive post-game therapy session to help you cope with the upcoming work week and purge the bitter taste that comes from a loss like this. Definitely a needed prescription.
A hearty thank you to everyone who took the time to join us for the live post game version of the Detroit Lions Podcast!

Ep: 186 – Quick Takes: Offensive Coordinators & The Draft – The Detroit Lions Podcast
This week on the Detroit Lions Podcast: Quick Takes, Chris and Jeff bring you a new intro, a look at possible replacement Offensive Coordinators for Jim Bob Cooter, and we take our first look ahead to the draft.
Check out the new intro and get yourself in a saucy, smoky lounge type of mood as we discuss two of the most pressing issues for the Detroit Lions this week.
Detroit Lions Podcast: Quick Takes
First, we discuss possible replacements for Jim Bob Cooter. We start by looking internally at talent inside the Lions organization. After that, we look across the landscape of possibilities at Offensive Coordinator. We walk you through the pluses and minuses of some of the top prospects. It’s a great first look at where the team might go.
After that we take our first look at the draft for the Lions. The nice thing is, we give you players that you can scout on your own this weekend as they play in games that will give you a good look at their talents and how they may fit into the Lions scheme.
Chris and The Riz, together again, on the Detroit Lions Podcast.

Ep: 185 – Lions Look To The Los Angeles Rams – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at the Lions loss to the Bears, talk about where we get things wrong, and discuss the heartbreak that comes with dashed expectations. We also take a look ahead to the Rams.
Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Turkey
This week we begin by talking about the turkey that the Lions left on the field against the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving morning. Chris discusses the offense and which areas Jim Bob Cooter and Matt Patricia run – you’ve not heard this anywhere else. They also discuss Matthew Stafford’s role. There is a lot to look at here and it looks like we have more than enough information to make some serious decisions about Detroit Lions personnel. Decisions that include both players and the coaching staff. It’s about not throwing the baby out with the bath water at this point and surgically removing the pieces that cost us the most.
Case takes an introspective look at what being wrong is like. Chris rallies around the moment and celebrates Case having to eat some crow since he loves to celebrate his “I told you so’s” so much. The reality is, no one gets everything right, and some people deserve to know when they are wrong a heck of a lot more than others. Just ask the person who writes the show notes… lol
We hit some key program notes and wind up with a big ask. We are looking for someone with a Detroit Lions party bus. We’re shooting a video (more info in the show) and need this bus to be a part of it. The bus’s owner can do the driving, we just need it as a prop for the video. Get in touch with us via Twitter or via the contact form on the website if you can help out – we’ve got something great in mind…
Time To Take It Deep
Next, the Detroit Lions Podcast tackles a difficult topic surrounding the team this year – unmet expectations. We discuss how we got our expectations so high, ask what we missed, and topic walk across various areas in which the team has met expectations. We ask whether expectations were realistic, whether we were lied to, and what warning signs were missed. This is a pretty meaty topic and we have a pretty robust discussion. There’s likely more to be covered here in the future, but for now, we feel it gets a solid treatment in the current context of the Lions situation.
Moving ahead, we take a look at the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams and discuss where the team’s opportunities might lie.

Ep: 184 – Lions Look To The Bears Again – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at a surging Lions team that just beat the Carolina Panthers. Trying to predict this team is a fool’s errand this year. We also take a look at WRs, the defensive front seven, Sam Martin’s recent successes, and a whole lot more.
We start the show with a call from one of our listeners again, good stuff from Roche down in Arizona. These calls give voice to Lions fans, and we will continue to allow our listeners to put *anyone* on blast every week. You call (929) 33-Lions, we’ll put it on the air. Go ahead and let it flow, it’s the best way to clear your mind and the air.
Detroit Lions Podcast – Panthers Review
From there we do a quick review of the Panthers game and look at a number of specifics related to the Lions play on both sides of the ball and what their win means for the team going forward. Of course the goal posts showed up again and are really vying for Defensive Player of the Year honors. The front seven played much better than their talent levels would suggest, and we talk about where that’s coming from and why it might have played out the way it did. We also talk about how things change over time and some of the significant changes that this team has experienced so far this year.
The Detroit Lions Podcast also talks about who filled in for Golden Tate, how that might happen in the future, and what else we expect to see from the offense this year. We also discuss Sam Martin’s performance, and a whole lot more.
Lastly we discuss the upcoming game against Chicago and what it’s going to take for the Lions to pull it out.

Ep: 183 – Lions Look To The Carolina Panthers – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff “The Riz” Risdon for a raucous breakdown of the past week in Detroit Lions news. We manage to find a way to have some fun with the current situation while taking a deeper look at what ails the team and what it might take to fix things.
We start the week out discussing the loss to the Bears, and basically what happened in that game. It was heartbreaking and we all expected more from the Lions this week. We also wonder what happened to the team that we saw beat the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers this year. The team is a bit bi-polar and we try to figure out why. We also give credit to some high character players the team has picked up in Damon “Snacks” Harrison and Devon Kennard. Great twitter follows that will help you feel a heck of a lot better about your team.
Detroit Lions Podcast Weighs In On Coaching
From there we dive into the Matt Patricia topic. It’s been a hot one as of late, and we talk about it from a number of different angles. Chris even manages to convince The Riz that we saw Jim Caldwell’s ceiling and that moving on was the right thing to do. From there the conversation hits a number of points and arguments for where we are and where we should go from here.
Once we’re done with that one, we move on to another smoking hot subject these days… Matthew Stafford and whether he should remain a Detroit Lion. We here on the Detroit Lions Podcast stand behind Stafford, but this isn’t just a rhetorical conversation. We bring facts, data, and our patented snark to the discussion. There are a number of points to address here, and we try to cover all of them.
After those conversations we take a look forward and determine how we might improve this year with what we have. Chris walks down the list and Riz reacts to a number of opportunities for the team to improve. The discuss the ins and outs of each approach and determine where things should go from here.
From there the boys of the Detroit Lions Podcast go into the upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers. We try to help predict what you might see and what to expect. Also, the Riz takes us “Around The Division” for a look at what else is happening in the NFC North.

Ep: 182 – Detroit Lions & Chicago Bears Postgame Show – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by our old friend, PunkRawkinTrev to conduct a live postgame therapy session for Lions fans after the Detroit Lions lost to the Chicago Bears today. This is one of those games that seemed to have really sucked the hope out of fans. The consensus is that this pretty much signals the end of any playoff hopes for this team in 2018. There are questions about the team from top to bottom. The boys take your calls and discuss what it means and what could happen next.
This was one of those games that seems to happen every year. It’s the game that really signals that the team won’t find the success that fans so desperately crave. It’s been much harder for fans to deal with in 2018. Expectations were high. Our GM told us that a 9-7 record was unacceptable. We have a new coach who was bringing discipline and a work ethic to the team that is hadn’t had. Conditioning, drafting, scouting, everything was being changed and it was the Lions year to make a splash.
Detroit Lions Podcast Resets Expectations
None of that matters. Fans feel as though they were lied to. Expectations were set high and then dashed quickly. People don’t know who this team is, nor how to define success anymore. They want a winner, and all they see is massive failure, again. This game was the gut punch that fans who had been around awhile expected. The one they expect every year. So far, they are rewarded with that gut punch with more reliability than you’ll get out of any Ford vehicle.
Matthew Stafford looked lost. The secondary looked lost. Everyone who had a coach looked lost. Interestingly, special teams performed well after they fired (and didn’t replace) the coach. Injuries bit the team in key locations. Marvin Jones was hurt. So was Kerryon Johnson. Kenny Golladay was dinged up. Darius Slay couldn’t play, and Sam Martin left the building in an ambulance for god’s sake. The entire day was a parade of headlines touting bad news and failures. This was a horrible game for the Lions, with massive implications for the season and the organization going forward.
So we take your calls and conduct an intensive post-game therapy session to help you cope with the upcoming work week and purge the bitter taste that comes from a loss like this. Definitely a needed prescription.
