Ep: 294 – Jacksonville Jaguars Post Game – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman help Lions fans celebrate the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Lions were able to play very well in all three phases of the game, which is not something we see very often from this team, and logged a convincing victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Is this something to look forward to, or was it a flash against a terrible team? Jacksonville Jaguars Aren’t A Good Team! There is an obvious argument that the Jacksonville Jaguars aren’t a good football team. Many Lions fans follow with, “this win is meaningless because the Jags stink!” While this may be true, the Jacksonville Jaguars are an NFL team with NFL-caliber talent. The Lions didn’t eke out a win, nor did they seem to struggle at any point. If you were to see this score in a Packers/Jaguars game, you’d feel that was “right”.  Take the win and enjoy it, the Lions played well. Detroit Lions Podcast Still Has Questions With that there are questions that we will need to start asking right after victory Monday. Questions like, “Is Matthew Stafford back?” “Was this defensive showing the result of game plan, or has a real adjustment been made in the bye week?” “Will we see this defense again?” “Is D’Andre Swift really as good as he looked?” There are a lot of things to think about and a second watch this week will help. Great win from the Lions, hope to see this continue. Help Us Raise Money For St. Jude – Christmas For The Kids We discuss our plans around our upcoming (2nd annual) fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital – we raised almost $7,500 last time, this time our goal is much, much higher. Ep: 293 – Jacksonville Jaguars Preview – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Jeff Risdon, and Tony Ortiz get together to preview the Detroit Lions upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Lions have a lot of similar issues to the Jacksonville Jaguars, a struggling defense, a 1-3 record, and a fan base that is ready for a coaching change. Jacksonville Jaguars Coaching Struggles This could be a pivotal game for both teams, and might be the final nail in the coffin for the coach whose team comes away the loser. It may turn into a battle between to see which coach still has their players on board. As I often do, I’m putting my money on the Lions to take this game and the Jacksonville Jaguars to be the one’s taking action in relieving their coach of his duties. Detroit Lions Podcast Previews Tony Ortiz and Jeff Risdon make a great case for a Lions win this week, whether Lions fans want it or not. The Lions are heading into a stretch of very winnable games, and while it isn’t anyone’s prediction, the New York Giants won a Super Bowl with a 9-7 team that no one thought had any business even making the playoffs. As crazy as 2020 has been, it might not hurt to let your mind imagine the insanity for a bit. That’s on you though, it never comes up in the show. Help Us Raise Money For St. Jude – Christmas For The Kids We discuss our plans around our upcoming (2nd annual) fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital – we raised almost $7,500 last time, this time our goal is much, much higher. Ep: 292 – Lions vs. Jacksonville Jaguars – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case bring you the latest Lions news heading out of the bye week and into the rest of the Lions season, starting at the Jacksonville Jaguars. Here we are facing one of the most important, must win games of Matt Patricia’s coaching career in Week 6 of a Covid-plagued NFL season. Even Vegas is betting against the Jacksonville Jaguars this week, so a loss by the Lions could signal the end of Matt Patricia’s time in Detroit. Detroit Lions Podcast Reflects On Coaching Errors In this episode we tackle a number of topics, but one of the most important is likely Chris’s discussion about the ongoing coaching failures in Detroit, and a very possible cause. Chris explains exactly why Jim Caldwell was a 9-7 coach at best in Detroit, and likely why Jim Schwartz had the success he did, and even a likely key to why Matt Patricia is having difficulty as well. From there he defines one very specific coordinator he wants, why he wants him, and what it means to selecting the next Head Coach for this team. The Lions Still Have To Face The Jacksonville Jaguars We take a look ahead to the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and what it will take for the Lions to pull out a must win game against an exceptionally bad Jacksonville team. We also take you ‘Around The Division’, discuss Jeff Okudah’s growth, dig in on the defensive line, and discuss the sudden surge of former Lions receiver Travis Fulgham. There are plenty of valid reasons to rip on the Lions coaching and scouting staff, but Travis Fulgham isn’t really one of them. Help Us Raise Money For St. Jude – Christmas For The Kids We discuss our plans around our upcoming (2nd annual) fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital – we raised almost $7,500 last time, this time our goal is much, much higher. We’ve got a plan to make it happen, and will be bringing out the big guns. Ep: 291 – Lions Bye Week Blues – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case bring you the latest Lions news heading into the bye week. There’s a heck of a lot more to talk about than one might think. Fans are down due to the team’s performance, some want heads on stakes, and many just welcome a break from the pain. How do you put together a show when facing those headwinds? Like a boss, that’s how. Listen in and see what we’re talking about… Detroit Lions Podcast Talks The ‘Arc Of A Lions Fan’ Chris has talked about his ‘Arc of a Lions Fan’ theory a few times on the show, this time he lays it all out. He explains why the Lions present a unique fan experience, and one that is repeatable, predictable, and which the Detroit Lions organization really needs to understand before it’s too late. It’s definitely worth a listen, if only to understand where you are on the arc, and how to break the cycle. We also ask whether we should adjust our opinions to align with the current “popular” opinion. It’s an interesting question, and with 5 different hosts from extremely diverse backgrounds on the show during a typical game week, all providing their differing opinions, we land on ‘no’. That’s not giving away the ghost on this, the ‘why’ is probably the real meat of this discussion. Bye For Football – The Coach Too? It’s been a big week on Twitter about the state of the Detroit Lions and their coaching staff. Many have brought out the knives for the Lions coach, Matt Patricia, and GM Bob Quinn as well. Some however, have a different opinion. Lawrence Jackson brought some real insight and thoughtful commentary this week, definitely worth checking out.  We go back over Coach Jim Caldwell’s tenure, and even spend some time on Jim Schwartz’s time with the team. After talking through and reminding fans of the historical perspective, we start to discuss Matt Patricia’s legacy with the Lions and what it might mean. We also cover the Houston Texans firing of Bill O’Brien, and what the ‘right time’ to fire a coach is for the Lions. There’s a lot more to this than sending someone packing, and fans needs to think of that within the context of the big picture and what it means for the team over the long term Help Us Raise Money For St. Jude – Christmas For The Kids We discuss our plans around our upcoming (2nd annual) fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital – we raised almost $7,500 last time, this time our goal is much, much higher. Ep: 289 – New Orleans Saints Preview – The Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by world famous superstar Tony “TO” Ortiz, and Jeff “The Riz” Risdon to preview this week’s Lions game against the New Orleans Saints. A great show, and TO gets a little loose lipped with a Brandstatter story teaser and rumors of a picture of him in a Spider man costume… More to come on that! The New Orleans Saints Injury Report Is Longer Than War & Peace While the New Orleans Saints are the 4.5 point Vegas favorites, that could all change with the release of the New Orleans Saints Injury Report. Both starting cornerbacks (Marshon Lattimore and Janoris Jenkins), Jared Cook, Andrus Peat, Marcus Davenport, and Michael Thomas are all ‘out’ for the New Orleans Saints. If there was ever a game where Matthew Stafford should break free, find his groove, and open up, this one looks set up to be the one. Kenny Golladay with another week of healing puts him and Marvin Jones in their respective positions of strength, TJ Hockenson, Danny Amendola, and even Jesse James look poised to have a big day. If you’re looking for D’Andre Swift to have his first show out game, I’d expect it against the New Orleans Saints this Sunday. In other words, take the over. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Match-ups Chris, Jeff, and Tony scout out their most important match-ups for the game and discuss keys to the Lions victory. Each of us found another key for the Lions to beat the New Orleans Saints after their strong showing against the Arizona Cardinals. We spend some time reviewing that game (which we all predicted wrong), and what it could mean if the Lions were to come out of this week with a 2-2 record. Boy would some heads explode if that were to happen… Predictions finish the show off, and you just might be surprised by what you hear. Help Us Raise Money For St. Jude – Christmas For The Kids We discuss our plans around our upcoming (2nd annual) fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital – we raised almost $7,500 last time, this time our goal is much, much higher. Ep: 288 – Lions On To New Orleans Saints – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take you through the Lions first win of the season against the Arizona Cardinals, look ahead to the New Orleans Saints, and a whole lot more. Detroit Lions Podcast Puts The Arizona Cardinals Game Under Further Review The Detroit Lions played a great game against the Arizona Cardinals. The defense stepped up like it hasn’t so far in 2020, and it looked very good doing it. Chris debunks the narrative that the Lions didn’t win the game and that Kyler Murray lost it, with some help from Ash Thompson. The Lions stepped up in all three phases of the game to take that one away from the Arizona Cardinals, and are looking to do it again next week against the New Orleans Saints. The guys also discuss the lowering difficulty of the schedule after the bye week and what it could mean for the team’s performance on the year. Also, what it might mean insofar as the team keeping Matt Patricia as coach. There are many layers to this, and we start to work with some of them on what will certainly be a multi-week conversation. On To The New Orleans Saints This is where the Lions get their chance to show that they are truly heading in the right direction – Sunday afternoon at Ford Field against the New Orleans Saints. The Lions will definitely have to take the next step as a team, the offense and ball control is likely going to be key again against the New Orleans Saints. Alvin Kamara is going to be difficult to stop, and Drew Brees might be old, but no one thinks he’s washed up.  The New Orleans Saints are coming off of two tough weeks of football and likely expect to roll over the Lions. This game is a statement game for Detroit – how they play against the New Orleans Saints this week may very well define their season. Help Us Raise Money For St. Jude – Christmas For The Kids We discuss our plans around our upcoming (2nd annual) fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital – we raised almost $7,500 last time, this time our goal is much, much higher. Ep: 287 – Lions & Arizona Cardinals Post Game – The Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Andy the Sandman to help you celebrate the Lions first win in eleven months, and they got it over the Arizona Cardinals. An unexpected event that was an excellent team effort by the Lions in all phases of the game. Kyler Murray didn’t have a great game, but much of that was forced by how the Lions attacked their offense. Lions Didn’t Let The Arizona Cardinals Take Off The Lions did a great job of containing Kyler Murray in the pocket other than on designed run plays. In doing so, they limited the Arizona Cardinals offense in a way that gave the Lions a chance to exchange scores throughout the game. The lead was traded between teams multiple times, but with solid play in all three phases of the game the Lions were able to stop Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals to set up Matthew Stafford’s Lions final drive. This put the Lions in position to run the clock out with a victory on a Matt Prater field goal. Detroit Lions Podcast Sees A Full Game From The Lions The win over the Arizona Cardinals started with a solid defensive performance, including the Jeff Okudah interception (his first) that Chris predicted on Friday’s show with Jeff Risdon and Tony Ortiz. The Lions defense has been lacking this year, but they were able to scheme around the Arizona Cardinals offense in a way that gave the Lions offense what they needed to pull out a victory in Arizona. Of course, we take your calls – that’s what we do on the post-game show. We update the Detroit Lions Podcast “Meaningful Games In Decemb-o-mometer” as a result of today’s win over the Arizona Cardinals and take your calls. Its celebration Sunday and Monday for Lions fans, and then we get ready to face the New Orleans Saints. We also announce that we are “getting the band back together!” Dan Miller, Jim Brandstatter, and Tony Ortiz, the Detroit Lions Radio Network’s Superstar Lions crew are reuniting for the first time since Jim Brandstatter was asked to leave the Radio team with Dan. Join us at the 24-hour podcast-a-thon when they call in and share never-before-heard behind-the-scenes stories and take us back to the golden era of Lions Radio broadcasts. Ep: 286 – Arizona Cardinals Preview – The Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff Risdon and Tony “TO” Ortiz to preview this week’s Lions game against the Arizona Cardinals. As always we have a great show with insights you won’t get anywhere else! Arizona Cardinals Are The Favorites Here we are at game three of a season in which the Lions desperately need a win. They’ve had a tough schedule so far, and that difficulty level isn’t easing up. The Arizona Cardinals and Kyler Murry aren’t going to make things much easier for the hapless Lions. The one thing the Lions have in their favor is that Arizona has the weakest defense the Lions have seen in the season so far – that’s something the Lions look to exploit. The Lions are going to need to put a lot of points on the board, and are hoping to see the Matthew Stafford of early 2019 on the field against the Arizona Cardinals, not the one who we’ve seen in 2020. We’ll talk about why there’s hope that this just might be the case. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Defense This is likely to be a tough test for rookie Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah as he’s likely to face off against the timeless Larry Fitzgerald, a wily vet who has the talent of a man many years younger. This is going to be a key match-up for the Lions, as is the defensive line. Kenyan Drake is always a threat, and Kyler Murray can run like no other. The Lions are going to need to take the ball away from the Arizona Cardinals, likely more than once, if they have any hope to win the game. We’ll share our predictions, the Detroit Lions Podcast “Meaningful Games In Decemb-o-mometer” makes its first appearance, Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals Injury Reports, and a whole lot more jam this info-packed show. Help Us Raise Money For St. Jude – Christmas For The Kids We discuss our plans around our upcoming (2nd annual) fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital – we raised almost $7,500 last time, this time our goal is much, much higher. Ep: 285 – Lions & Green Bay Packers Post Game – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by the post-game brain known as Sandman. They discuss the Lions loss to the Green Bay Packers. It’s a big therapy week, and thus a pretty long show. If you need to find a way to get over the loss and have a couple of laughs along the way, we’ve got the salve you need. Green Bay Packers Sit Atop The Division No one thought it would be the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears at the top of the division with the Minnesota Vikings and Lions sitting winless after two game. The Packers are showing strong early this year, and the struggling Lions were an early casualty. The Lions have an extremely difficult start to the season and for all intents and purposes it looks like the team will be winless going into the bye week. Should we fire coach Matt Patricia now? Chris still says, “not yet”. Sandman tends to agree. Everyone agrees it’s a terrible place for the team and fans to be only two games into the season. Detroit Lions Podcast Let’s You Know When We talk about timing on the coach firing that seems inevitable at this point. While coach Matt Patricia still has a lot of season to work with before it can be determined if the Lions will be playing “meaningful games in December”, the fuse is definitely getting shorter. Chris will tell you when he think pulling the trigger makes the most sense, not just for immediate satisfaction, but for the long term health of the team. The boys also discuss their thinking on Bob Quinn’s future with the organization. In there we also discuss the game and the performance of players both for the Lions and Green Bay Packers (good and bad). Lastly, we take a ton of calls throughout the show – I have to say that by the end of the show we all agreed that the therapy worked and we were ready to move on. Help Us Raise Money For St. Jude We discuss our plans around our upcoming (2nd annual) fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital – we raised almost $7,500 last time, this time our goal is much, much higher. We’ve got a plan to make it happen, and will be bringing out the big guns. Ep: 284 – Green Bay Packers Preview – The Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff Risdon and a slightly late Tony Ortiz – Check that, Tony is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to. Dean Blandino is here with his insight on exactly what’s going on with Clete Blakeman too – this is huge news for Lions fans. Dean Blandino Talks Clete Blakeman, the NFL And More We get Dean Blandino on the phone again to discuss what in the heck the NFL was thinking by putting “controversial” referee, Clete Blakeman, on the Detroit Lions @ Green Bay Packers game. This is a no win situation for the NFL or the crew – and historically, the Lions. Dean talks through how they typically handle such things, why things might be different this time, and goes into a number of other topics. As always, love him or hate him, Dean Blandino brings great insight to the show and what the NFL is doing. Detroit Lions Podcast Green Bay Preview After last Sunday’s game, listening to fans all week, and thinking the city was burning down, no one was feeling particularly great about facing the Green Bay Packers in week two. A perennial playoff contender with their second Hall of Fame quarterback in a row is never a fun place to go as a visiting team. Looking from a distance, this is a blowout win for the Packers, but we dive in a little deeper and see something a little different. We start with this week’s Lions and Green Bay Packers Injury Report. The Detroit Lions and Green Back Packers have a long history, but recently, the Lions have been really close, and had the Packers number. As a matter of fact, they’ve beat the Packers twice since they’ve beaten Chicago. This is a much better match-up than many would expect, and if both team show up in Lambeau it should be a highly contested game. Jeff Risdon and Tony Ortiz make their predictions, while Chris plays Case’s normal road and rides the fence a little bit.
