The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 537 – Full Throttle Thursday – A Conversation with Dr. Andrew Benedek

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/FTT_Episode_537-A_Conversation_w_Dr_Andrew_Benedek.mp3 Dr. Andrew Benedek is an entrepreneur who focuses on the idea of climate change. His current company, Anaergia, is designed to help offset climate change by generating “renewable natural gas” to replace the natural gas currently being used. His previous company developed technology for recycling water.  When it comes to climate change, many people believe the biggest problem is carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuel. Dr. Andrew Benedek says, “Methane is 84 times worse than carbon dioxide.” Food waste and organic waste that goes into landfills is being converted into methane—which then goes in the atmosphere. “The concentration of methane is low, but the impact is very significant. About 37% of the impact on climate change is due to the increase in methane in the atmosphere,” he says. With increases in population, we have more and more landfills, especially in Asia. Dr. Andrew Benedek’s company is trying to convert methane from being a problem to a positive fuel replacement. In this episode we discuss:   How it’s remarkably difficult to change our fuel infrastructure, and it can take 60 years or more to do (e.g., solar power was invented 60 years ago, and today only 10% of the world’s energy in solar or wind) Why Dr. Andrew Benedek thinks “the problem with climate change is that it’s very complicated”—and that the current structure of government and the four-year cycle of American elections makes it difficult to solve the problem, because it causes a “short-term view” Why many technical people are frustrated, because they can see how things can be done, but they don’t know how to get technology commercialized  How 25% of Denmark’s natural gas is renewable—and they plan to get to 100% renewable by 2030 How government leadership and incentive can help us change infrastructure relatively quickly—yet at the same time, government often does not make a good business partner Why Dr. Andrew Benedek believes the secret to creating a successful company in the environmental space is to “pick a problem that’s not going to go away, but will increase”   We also discuss Ford’s plans to lay off 8,000 people, GM’s announcement that they won’t make anything but electric by 2035; and Volvo’s plans to go all electric by 2030. Dr. Andrew Benedek says “The tipping point is going to happen soon.”   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 537 Full Throttle Thursday – A Conversation with Dr. Andrew Benedek Anaergia.com Looking to take your mindset to the next level?  Be sure to stop over on The Successful Mind Podcast Channel on YouTube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your audio podcast feed.  You can currently binge an entire series where David takes you through high level teachings around Raymond Holliwell’s classic book, Working With the Law.  If you’re ready to take the next step in exploring the Universal Laws and mindset it requires to be a huge success you’ll want to check this series out. The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 536 – Mindset Monday’s – Embrace the Imbalance

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_536-MindsetMondays_Embrace_the_Imbalance.mp3 People often ask us how to create “balance” in their business—particularly between work and family. As a business owner and/or parent, you’re responsible for so many different things. Whether you’re devoting time to a marriage, a family, a job, your church, your civic duties, or social interests—everything requires a certain time investment from you, for it to be effective. When a person starts a business, that requires almost all of their time in order to be successful, especially in the beginning when they’re bootstrapping and doing everything themselves. In this episode my CEO, Steph Tuss, and I discuss:   Why searching for “balance” is often a way to avoid feeling guilty—and how the search for balance is really someone looking for comfort  The phenomenon of “mom guilt”—and how parents can be emotionally torn between wanting to grow their business, and being afraid to take time away from their kids (so they end up using their kids as an excuse not to grow) How being “out of balance” means discomfort How you can eliminate feeling “off balance” by putting proper boundaries in place—when you’re working, you’re working; when you’re with your family, you’re with your family Why you must adjust your goals based on your responsibilities and the things that are important to you How Steph planned for imbalance as a mom, wife, and leader—and this helped her stay married How being a people-pleaser and a peacekeeper can make you lose sense of who you really are—so it’s important to carve time out to be by yourself and to know what’s important to you   Just like with nature, there are seasons in your business. There are times when you’re planting seeds, setting yourself up, and things feel more quiet. Then there are times when you’re harvesting, and things are hectic. There’s no way to achieve balance when you’re harvesting—and you wouldn’t want to, because you want to capitalize on the opportunity in the moment.  If you’re at a flat line all year long, there’s no innovation, challenge, or adversity. Imbalance in business is what drives innovation. For that reason, you must welcome the discomfort that comes with owning your business. Embrace it, and get comfortable being uncomfortable.   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 536: Mindset Monday’s – Embrace the Imbalance Be sure to join David over on You Tube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your podcast feed. The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 535 – Full Throttle Thursday – A Conversation with Kelly Bandas

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/FTT_Episode_535-A_Conversation_w_Kelly_Bandas.mp3 Kelly Bandas is a writer and comedian best known for her popular Instagram and TikTok videos, which satirize everything from millennial motherhood to social media culture. Using self-deprecating humor (with her being from the Northeast), her mission is to empower and lift up other women through community, inclusivity, and laughter.  Her new book is Rookie Mistakes: A Grown-Up’s Field Guide for Getting Your Act Together—which is hysterical, substantial, and a page-turner that’s hard to put down. In this episode, I ask Kelly what inspired her to write her book, where she got her humor and insight from, and what her intention is with her book. She says, “I wanted to send the message that you’re never too old to change your mind.” Her book is light and uplifting for those who may be silently struggling with mental health and wellness. We discuss:   How Kelly found inspiration from some of the toughest, darkest times of her life—and how humor got her through those tough times Her passion for being a writer and a storyteller—someone who can get people to turn the pages and read “below the fold” How Kelly was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety at an early age, and her experience as a failed mommy blogger How people are making it through the day, thanks to being part of a community The story of her dad taking her to a baseball game in the 90s (a time when it was “boys over here, girls over there”)—and how that experience created a bond with her dad, and brought about Kelly’s lifelong love of sports and baseball (she later got hired by the Boston Red Sox) How people get “mired down in their own camp,” not wanting to hear any other ideas and wanting to be right (Kelly calls this “screaming into the void to other people who agree with me”) How she played with format while writing her book, using light writing that’s like “coming up for air”   Plus, we discuss Kelly’s process for creating social media posts, and how her family helps her with that. She shares what life is like with her three boys who are 11, 8, and 6.   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 535 Full Throttle Thursday – A Conversation with Kelly Bandas Rookie Mistakes by Kelly Bandas KellyBandas.com Find Kelly Bandas on Instagram Find Kelly Bandas on TikTok Looking to take your mindset to the next level?  Be sure to stop over on The Successful Mind Podcast Channel on YouTube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your audio podcast feed.  You can currently binge an entire series where David takes you through high level teachings around Raymond Holliwell’s classic book, Working With the Law.  If you’re ready to take the next step in exploring the Universal Laws and mindset it requires to be a huge success you’ll want to check this series out. The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 534 – What It Means To Be a Leader

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_534-Effective_Leadership_w_Steph_Tuss.mp3 With everything going on in the country right now, we could all use more discussions on leadership. Today we’ve got Steph Tuss, CEO of Life is Now, Inc., on the podcast with her husband BT, and they’re discussing what it means to be a leader.  Many leaders today expect their team and employees to follow through on things, yet they themselves fail to follow through on their own expectations—because they’re not “being their word.” As a leader, you have to learn to lead yourself. In business, you either sink or swim. Leadership is about getting yourself to do the things you really don’t feel like doing, or that feel uncomfortable. In today’s episode you’ll learn:   How Steph was called “bossy” as a kid, and how she embraced the role of a leader from an early age, starting with her standing up to bullies on the playground  How she became the face of the teacher’s union in California in her early 20s—and how her role as President of the Teacher’s Association came about because she was dissatisfied with how everything was run Why Steph sees a “leader” not as someone who has authority, but as someone who represents other people; it’s not “you against them”—it’s you standing FOR them and WITH them How Steph and Brandon’s weekly grocery budget was only $125, with nothing left over, while they were living in a small house in midwestern Wisconsin—and yet even at that time, Steph became aware of the need to invest in herself  How she transitioned away from the classroom and into a leadership position in her own nutrition business—and quickly ramped up to making six figures, thanks to working with several mentors The leadership lessonsSteph learned along the way, especially when it comes to leading yourself   Steph believes life and business are both an adventure. As with any adventure, there are risks. There are up times, down times, blown tires, heat waves—but there are also beautiful sunsets and sunrises. The idea is for you to enjoy the journey, develop yourself along the way, and develop other people.  Regardless of what conflict happens along the way, it’s about knowing that “We’re going to be okay.” No matter what happens—every mistake, every misstep, every bad result—know that, “We’re going to be okay.”   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 534 – What It Means To Be a Leader Looking to take your mindset to the next level?  Be sure to stop over on The Successful Mind Podcast Channel on YouTube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your audio podcast feed.  You can now binge an entire series where David takes you through high level teachings around Raymond Holliwell’s classic book, Working With the Law.  If you’re ready to take the next step in exploring the Universal Laws and mindset it requires to be a huge success you’ll want to check this series out. The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 533 – Mindset Monday’s – The Answer is Leadership

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_533-A_Lesson_on_Leadership.mp3 People often tell me they want to make a quantum leap in their business. They want to know when things will get easier. When you ask for a quantum leap, understand that you’re also asking for a quantum leap in problems. They go hand in hand. Success doesn’t necessarily go hand in hand with things being easier. Many people are looking for a great leader in their company, but they’re looking for it out of desperation. It’s like, “Please, someone just take this mess I’ve created off my plate.” No good leader wants that. They want an opportunity to take their talent and skills, and do something great with it that makes a difference in people’s lives. They’re looking for the potential to fulfill their dream. Sometimes people will say, “I need to hire my own Steph Tuss.” My CEO, Steph, and I always laugh when we hear that. I don’t think people understand exactly what Steph does, or to the extent in which she does it. Most people have no idea what she went through to become the leader she is today—to be able to run our company in the way she does now. If you want to “find your own Steph”…ask yourself, are you prepared to be that leader yourself? Are you willing to put in the time, money, and dedication that’s required? In today’s episode you’ll learn:   The history of how Steph and I began working together, starting back in 2009—and how she was a consummate student, with a strong desire and passion to learn How it takes a certain level of commitment to become a great leader  Great leaders don’t just lead a company to a vision; they also manage and solve the “human” problems and conflicts that come up along the way Just because you start your own business and have a product or service doesn’t make you a leader—leadership is something you must grow into, and be dedicated to mastering Most people don’t want to quantum-leap their problems—they want to run away from them A leader must walk in their own leadership (which is damn hard) before they can become a great leader of other people All the things great leaders must be able to do   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 533: Mindset Monday’s – The Answer is Leadership Be sure to join David over on You Tube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your podcast feed. The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 532 – Lessons on Leadership – Part IV – A Players vs B Players: How Tolerating an Adequate Team Will Destroy Your Business

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/Episode_532-Lessons_on_Leadership-Part_IV-A_Players_vs_B_Players.mp3 In business, tolerations are dangerous. The things you tolerate are keeping you from growing and moving forward. If you’re not growing, you’re dying. One of the biggest tolerations business owners have is an adequate team filled with B-players or C-players. These are people who show up, do what’s necessary, then go home. An adequate player is concerned with, “How can we stay the same?”—not with innovation or doing what’s best for the company. This puts the brakes on your business. You don’t want an adequate team. Instead, you want A-players who are above adequate. A-players are hungry. They’re looking at where they can do more. They solve their own problems and think through solutions before bringing problems to you. Someone once told me that a deck of cards only has so many Aces, and the problem with most people is that they try to turn every other card into an Ace. In this episode, Steph Tuss and I discuss:   How most people are raised with the idea that you have to tolerate negativity, wrong thinking, or unnecessary suffering How negative circumstances are an opportunity—like a flag pointing you in the direction of something that needs to be changed in your life  How once you fix or remove a toleration, you can have an amazing outcome on the other side of it The reason businesses don’t grow (hint: it’s because they spend all their time trying to take a Queen, a King, a Ten, a Jack, a Deuce, and turn it into an Ace) The key characteristics of A-players—and why you can’t coach desire Why you must hire early, and hire based on where you’re going, not based on where you are Why business owners get emotional when hiring or firing people, or holding them accountable—and one of the main things you have to learn in business is to master your emotions My company helps people move through difficulties in their businesses. When someone is stuck, we we start by looking at what they’re tolerating. The first question we ask is, “What are you in resistance to?” or, “What are you tolerating?” At the root of a toleration is a resistance to change something.  Your underlying mindset must be to do what’s best for the company, even if this means firing or hiring people.   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 532 – Lessons on Leadership – Part IV – A Players vs B Players Looking to take your mindset to the next level?  Be sure to stop over on The Successful Mind Podcast Channel on YouTube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your audio podcast feed.  You can now binge an entire series where David takes you through high level teachings around Raymond Holliwell’s classic book, Working With the Law.  If you’re ready to take the next step in exploring the Universal Laws and mindset it requires to be a huge success you’ll want to check this series out. The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 531 – Lessons on Leadership – Part III – Communication & Accountability: Sunshine Your Mistakes to Make Them Your Greatest Successes

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/Episode_531-Lessons_on_Leadership-Part_III-Conflict.mp3 Today my CEO, Steph Tuss, and I are talking about communication and conflict. Most people avoid conflict because of things that happened in their childhood. They associate it with mom and dad fighting over something…a bar fight or physical alteration … a winner and a loser… or with someone being made wrong. All of these things can feel painful, dangerous, and unsafe, especially when you’re a child. Many of our clients are afraid to hold people accountable in their business, because they don’t want conflict. However, being conflict averse  or conflict avoidant can bring your business to its knees. Conflict is actually a good thing for business, because it brings out the best ideas . Disagreement, debate, different opinions, and different personalities are what bring about innovation. This can only happen through effective communication. In this episode you’ll learn:   How the outside world reinforces the idea that you shouldn’t want to participate in conflict—because you could be canceled for speaking your opinion Fundamentally, the US was built on the concept of freedom—to have a different opinion, have a different idea, to be heard, and to let the best idea win the day Meritocracy means the best idea wins—not the most important person in the room wins; and you can’t get good ideas without conflict Why conflict is required for commitment and buy-in on your team (because you can’t get someone’s commitment if they won’t voice their opinions) How Steph brings a new idea to our team and wants the team to poke holes in it, and tell her why it won’t work and what could go wrong—so that she can see it from a different perspective (this is how we find our most innovative ideas) Why our team has instilled the belief of “sun-shining your mistakes,” which means turning the light on your mistake (not sweeping it under the rug or hiding it from anyone)—because mistakes are an opportunity to grow and learn something new, so you get a different result   We should all embrace conflict in a business setting, and learn to nurture it in our companies. We should develop a healthy attitude around conflict, instead of trying avoid it or to change it to sooth our internal, emotional issues that we have about it.   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 531 – Lessons on Leadership – Part III – Communication & Accountability Looking to take your mindset to the next level?  Be sure to stop over on The Successful Mind Podcast Channel on YouTube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your audio podcast feed.  You can now binge an entire series where David takes you through high level teachings around Raymond Holliwell’s classic book, Working With the Law.  If you’re ready to take the next step in exploring the Universal Laws and mindset it requires to be a huge success you’ll want to check this series out. The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 530 – Lessons on Leadership – Part II – Hiring: Humble, Hungry & Smart

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/Episode_530-Lessons_on_Leadership-Part_II-Hiring.mp3 Today, Steph Tuss, and I are talking about how to hire the best person for your business or team. Most people don’t understand how to hire or fire someone. People tend to hire people they like, or people who are like them—but this is a mistake. If you want to win in business, you must hire the best person for the job. Instead of treating your business as a family, it’s better to treat it as a professional sports team. As “general manager coach,” your job is to make sure each position is manned by the absolute best. In this episode, we discuss:   What Steph has learned on her journey of hiring, firing, and team building How most people make decisions based on avoiding conflict and avoiding being uncomfortable How our company made an enormous paradigm shift in hiring by thinking of ourselves as an elite sports team, rather than a family—because nobody wants to fire their family, hold a family member accountable, or have a hard conversation with them if they’re not meeting their KPIs  Specific things to look for when you’re hiring someone—and why you should find someone who’s “humble, hungry, and smart” What being humble, hungry and smart actually looks like—and which questions to ask during the interview process to determine if someone has these traits Why “sunshining” your mistakes creates psychological safety within an organization  Why you should pay attention to how a potential hire is showing up, because who a person is “being” is everything   Having the best player in each position ensures that you can create the right culture in your team. In our company, we say all the time, “What’s in the best interest of the company?” It’s easy to default into saying, “What’s in the best interest of me?” or “What’s most comfortable for me?” But decisions need to be made based on what’s best for the whole company.   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 530 – Lessons on Leadership – Part II – Hiring: Humble, Hungry & Smart The Ideal Team Player by Patrick Lencioni The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni No Rules Rules by Reed Hastings Adam Grant –  Instagram Looking to take your mindset to the next level?  Be sure to stop over on The Successful Mind Podcast Channel on YouTube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your audio podcast feed.  You can now binge an entire series where David takes you through high level teachings around Raymond Holliwell’s classic book, Working With the Law.  If you’re ready to take the next step in exploring the Universal Laws and mindset it requires to be a huge success you’ll want to check this series out. The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 529 – Lessons on Leadership – Part I – Scaling: The Key to Scaling Your Business

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/Episode_529-Lessons_on_Leadership-Part_I-Scaling.mp3 One of the most common things we hear growing up is, “Why should I hire someone to do it, if I can do it myself for free?” But as entrepreneurs, the only way we can grow is if we receive support and hire help. Business owners only have so much time in a day. There are only so many tasks you can manage, and only so many people you can talk to. So if you want to grow and scale your business, you must delegate and allow yourself to receive support. The problem is, we’re raised with the idea that we must be a “self-made” person and do everything ourselves. This idea comes from the working class mindset.  In this episode, Steph Tuss and I discuss:   Why people have difficulty being supported in their business—and why so many are a “one-person show,”  doing everything themselves and wearing all the hats (and this prevents them from scaling and growing) How some people get their value from doing everything themselves at the expense of their self-esteem (and how this boils down to a “core wound” issue that says, “I’m not enough”) Why my decision to sell my John Deere tractor and never cut my own grass again led to “more life” for three different people (myself included) How hiring help gives other people and yourself an opportunity for growth—because it’s all for more life How there’s shame associated with asking for help Steph’s experience with starting a nutrition business with the goal of replacing her teacher’s salary—and how she discovered she could increase her earning capacity if she took specific things off her plate   Plus, we share an exercise to uncover the excuses you have that are rooted in fear, that are causing you NOT to hire the help you need. Learn the importance of scaling your business today.   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 529 – Lessons on Leadership – Part I – Scaling: The Key to Scaling Your Business Looking to take your mindset to the next level?  Be sure to stop over on The Successful Mind Podcast Channel on YouTube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your audio podcast feed.  You can now binge an entire series where David takes you through high level teachings around Raymond Holliwell’s classic book, Working With the Law.  If you’re ready to take the next step in exploring the Universal Laws and mindset it requires to be a huge success you’ll want to check this series out. The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 528 – Full Throttle Thursday – Soft White Underbelly: The Whittaker Family

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/FTT_Episode_528-Soft_White_Underbelly.mp3 “Soft White Underbelly” is a YouTube channel created by Mark Laita, a photographer who interviews and humanizes marginalized people in society. Many of the individuals featured have survived traumas and are living difficult, rough lives. It’s a huge series, with over a thousand videos uploaded onto the channel, interesting stories, beautiful photography, and millions of views. In today’s episode, BT and I discuss one video in particular of the Whittakers, an inbred family from West Virginia whom Mark has interviewed multiple times. They come from a family that is obviously limited intellectually, physically, and verbally. Their understanding of things is limited. By watching, you can see that the most intelligent part of the family has the least amount of incest. The deeper the incest goes, the worse it deteriorates. The average person probably doesn’t want to see these people and will pretend they’re not there. But Mark brings their stories to the surface.  We discuss:   The range of non-traditional individuals Mark interviews on “Soft White Underbelly” Why I’m on the fence about whether or not I like this YouTube channel—because most people are probably watching it for entertainment, not to help How “Soft White Underbelly” reminds me of when I was young, traveling through different parts of the United States and saw homeless people, interviewed them, and talked to them, while trying to understand their plight How people who live in abject poverty protect each other and defend the life they live How, from a resourceful aspect, even homeless people are able to get what they need to survive What I think Mark’s motives are for creating this channel, and whether or not it’s exploitative How he takes the Whittakers to Walmart, gets them clothes and food, and buys them appliances   Jordan Peterson spoke on the “disgust factor” in human beings and how we seem to have a genetic reaction to certain things that impact our survival. A healthy individual will most likely be repulsed by certain things that would potentially harm them psychologically, emotionally, physically, or in other ways. I’d encourage you to watch the video on the Whittakers and think about what your first reaction is—and why you’re reacting that way.   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 528 Full Throttle Thursday – Soft White Underbelly: The Whittaker Family Soft White Underbelly on YouTube – Inbred Family-The Whittakers Soft White Underbelly on YouTube – Walmart Shopping Trip-The Whittakers Looking to take your mindset to the next level?  Be sure to stop over on The Successful Mind Podcast Channel on YouTube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your audio podcast feed.  You can now binge an entire series where David takes you through high level teachings around Raymond Holliwell’s classic book, Working With the Law.  If you’re ready to take the next step in exploring the Universal Laws and mindset it requires to be a huge success you’ll want to check this series out.
