The Recession Cycle & How to Navigate the Negative
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM568_TheRecessionCycle.mp3 Recessions are a normal part of the economy. We go through a recession once every 10 years. You can track it, just like you can track time on a clock. Recessions are necessary. They’re part of a capitalist economy. Capitalism is set up in such a way that we live in a self-correcting marketplace. If you leave it alone and don’t mess with it, it will self-correct and move money and opportunity to new places. As we go through inflation, prices go up, and everything gets thrown out of balance. The economy has to reset itself at some point. We need a correction to come in and balance it. Any time there’s a pattern, there’s a cause. When you notice a pattern or a cycle, you can make predictions. You may not be able to predict everything that will occur or how it will affect you, but knowing that something WILL occur allows you to stay calm. In this episode, we discuss: How to have the right mindset during a recession, so that you not only survive, but thrive. This is the same mindset that caused many, many millionaires to be created during the Great Depression. How to help your team navigate a recession if they’re scared, by teaching them My experience going through 3 recessions—including when I worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance, selling life insurance policies as a youth from 1988 to 1990 until the savings and loan crisis hit, and everything fell apart How the media preaches “doom and gloom,” which causes people to make decisions based on assumptions, rather than based on what their company needs to move forward The difference between people who get rich during a recession, versus those who become poor How the media uses fear and propaganda to control people’s minds, causing them to be a victim of their own ignorance Everything, including the economy, operates based on the Law of Rhythm. There are good times and bad times, ups and downs, ins and outs. During a downturn, you need to focus on finding another opportunity. In order to grow during a recession, you have to focus on serving higher-end clients who aren’t affected by it. A mentor once told me, “You can make way more money in a recession than you can out of it if you know what you’re doing.” Links & Additional Resources Episode 154- Create Your Own Economy Episode 030- Control Your Financial Destiny Episode 536- Embrace the Imbalance Interested in finding out what type of leader you are? Is People Pleasing Ruining Your Business?
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM567_NeedToBeLiked.mp3 As entrepreneurs, one of our biggest Achilles heels is the need to be liked, aka people pleasing. It plays a huge role in someone’s psyche, business, and ability to make sales. It shows up in many ways—e.g., avoiding picking up the phone to have sales conversations, because you’re afraid of rejection. It shows up in pricing, playing small, and discounting your services. The need to be liked can also show up in the form of you not pushing back against someone who says, “I can’t afford that.” This indicates that you’re not fighting for what you’re selling or taking a stand for the value you deliver. In today’s episode we discuss: What it means to have “a need to be liked”—and where this comes from How Bob Proctor called me out for spending 45 minutes with people during my sales calls (because I had a need to be appreciated How I grew up on the streets of Chicago as both the tough guy who needed to survive—and the guy who wanted people to like me How people pleasing infiltrates almost every decision business owners make, and how this pushes business away A huge lesson I learned from Herbie the dog (this was a huge turning point in my ability to make sales) How I saw where I was stopping in my sales process—because I didn’t want anybody to be upset with me A shocking comment Steph’s grandmother made to Steph’s 3-year-old daughter, Bailey, years ago Plus, I share how I asked a top network marketing guy for help when I was stuck. He told me, “You don’t want it bad enough,” turned around, and walked away. If you’re in business, you need to be bold. You may need to question someone’s decisions during a sales call—which is considered rude and socially unacceptable. This is especially true with conversations around money, where you’re basically telling someone to write you a check or pay you. Asking difficult questions and pushing back during a sales call is a way of being in service to people. You Need an Identity Upgrade
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM566_IdentityShifts.mp3There’s something most, if not all, entrepreneurs deal with once they’ve hit a certain level of success. That is, they must improve their identity. People who become successful in life usually have several major identity transformations that they make along the way. Karl Lagerfeld, for example, changed his look to become the best designer in the world. He sculpted himself into the image of the person he saw himself becoming. He was fantastic about letting go of his past. Hugh Hefner changed himself and reinvented himself seven times, in order to stay relevant through the years. It’s different for everyone. You may need to change or upgrade your identity multiple times throughout your life, in order to grow your business. In this episode, we discuss: How one of our clients is on track to make $1 million—and she’s having a hard time seeing how she can expand, because she’s still viewing herself as a “beginning business owner” and still scraping by, living on a shoestring budget—she isn’t yet seeing herself as a multimillion dollar law firm owner Why it’s hard to hit the million dollar mark if you’re still in the “doing” of your business, working really hard, being in the weeds Why the problem isn’t the lack of a plan—it’s that you’re in resistance to doing something that will lead you to implementing the plan How your identity and the way you see yourself is based on your value system Why you must become the thing you want to acquire How transitioning from being in a job to being an entrepreneur requires a completely different mindset and a shift in how you see yourself The major differences between an employee mindset and an entrepreneurial mindset As we head into 2023, ask yourself, “Who do I want to be?” It’s not just about the things you do—it’s about the person you want to become. What are the changes you need to make over the course of next year to become that person? The Best of 2022 – Part II
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_565_Best_of_2022_Part_II.mp3 Happy New Year! In today’s show, we’re bringing you more excerpts from the best of The Successful Mind Podcast of 2022. These include some of our most-downloaded episodes, as well as our favorite picks. If any of these clips jump out at you, you may want to revisit the full episode. We’ve provided links to each below. [1:37]Episode 527 – Think About What You’re Thinking When you find yourself experiencing the same problem over and over again, or having the same negative thought patterns repeatedly, ask yourself, “Why am I thinking what I’m thinking?” People who do this have a tendency to live in the past, rather than focus on the future. [2:59]Episode 530 – Lessons on Leadership – Part II – Hiring: Humble, Hungry & Smart When hiring, many business owners tend to hire people whom they like, or people who are just like them. This is the wrong approach. Instead you want to hire the best person for the job on your team. Think of your company not as a family, but as an elite sports team. As “general manager coach,” your job is to make sure each position is manned by the absolute best. Nobody wants to fire their family or hold them accountable to meeting their KPIs or their key results. [6:05]Episode 532: Lessons on Leadership: A Players vs. B Players In your business, the goal should be to hire A players—people who are above-average, who solve their own problems, and think through solutions before bringing problems to you. By contrast, an adequate player is a B or C player. They show up, they do what’s necessary, then go home. They’re not hungry. They’re not looking to do more than what’s expected of them. A deck of cards only has so many aces (“A players”). The reason why many businesses don’t grow is because they spend all their time trying to take a queen, a king, a jack, or a deuce, and turn it into an ace. [9:02]Episode 535: A Conversation with Kelly Bandas I interviewed Kelly Bandas about how and why she used humor in her book, Rookie Mistakes: A Grown-Up’s Field Guide for Getting Your Act Together—a hysterical, substantial page-turner that’s hard to put down. Her top tip for being successful in your work or business is to “choose something you’re good at but also makes you happy.” [11:12]Episode 542: Reverse Engineer Your Vision When you’re thinking about your goals or a vision for your life—what would you create if you had no limits? People often limit themselves, based on what they think they can accomplish. If they can’t see how they’ll do something, they won’t even let themselves have that vision. Bob Proctor used to say, “Don’t think about what you ‘can’ do. Come from a place of what you truly want.” We’re taught so many misconceptions around vision—like it should be a financial goal, or a vision board. But really, it’s about painting a picture of where you’re going to be in 3 years. What do you want to be experiencing? What do you want to be seeing and feeling? How do you want your clients to experience you in 3 years? Get emotionally involved with that vision. [17:25]Episode 543: Are UFOs real? I’ve always thought there was life elsewhere in the universe. It seems ridiculous to me that we’d live in a vast universe and we’d be the only form of life out there. People who follow UFOs have long been discredited and considered quacks. But recently, pilots have even come out and shared their experiences of seeing UFOs (as in the infamous Tic Tac video). They have nothing to gain from going on record and saying these things. [19:36]Episode 550: A Conversation with Lieutenant Colonel Scott Mann I interviewed Scott Mann, a retired lieutenant colonel who spent 23 years in the United States Army, 18 of which were as a Green Beret, the US Army Special Forces. He shared his views on the “war on terror,” and how President Bush said it would be a war fought in the shadows. A small group of operators and intelligence professionals would do the bulk of the fighting, so that the rest of the country could go on about its business. Scott says this screwed up a lot of our military people, creating an unsustainable burden on those who fought in that war. We’re seeing this reflected in the mental health numbers now. He also shared his thoughts on the Vietnam population, and how the U.S. did them so wrong. [21:49]Episode 555: A Conversation with Marc Polymeropoulos I interviewed Marc Polymeropoulos, a retired CIA officer from the Senior intelligence service ranks. He shares his experiences working with the CIA, how he learned a unique style of leadership, and how his career ended badly, due to Havana Syndrome. Marc got physically sick and experienced a loss of cognitive abilities, and unfortunately didn’t get the help he needed from the CIA. Despite this moral injury, he still believes deeply in the organization. [24:27]Episode 558: The Hidden Meaning Behind Complaining What’s the difference between a complaint and verbalizing a problem? You verbalize a problem so that you can find a solution and change it. A complaint is more of a gripe or a whiney energy that you bring to a situation. It’s like when the server at a restaurant brings you cold soup. You have two choices. You can either complain about the soup to everyone at the table (none of whom can do anything about it). Or you can simply say, “Excuse me, sir, can I please have my soup warmed up? It’s a little cold.” That’s stating the fact and asking for what you need. Most people default to complaining around the table and then not saying anything about it. [30:02]Episode 561: Is Bragging in Business Bad? Many business owners keep themselves well hidden. They do it with the excuse of, “I don’t want to self-promote. I don’t want to brag. I don’t want to seem conceited.” This is a middle class value that has to change once you become an entrepreneur. When you’re working for someone else, you’re really focusing on staying safe, keeping your employment, staying within your role, and not outshining your boss. As entrepreneurs, we must rise above that mentality. When you share a client win, it’s actually not bragging. Thank you so much for such a wonderful year. The Best of 2022 – Part I
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_564_Best_of_2022_Part_I.mp3 In this 2-part series, we’re bringing you excerpts from the very best of The Successful Mind Podcast this past year. These include some of our most-downloaded episodes, as well as some of our favorite picks. If any of these jump out at you, you may want to revisit the full episode. We’ve provided links to each below. Enjoy the show! [1:17]Episode 453: How to Trust Yourself in the Year Ahead Every year, millions of people set a New Year’s resolution and don’t do a damn thing with it. When you say you’re going to do something—and you don’t do it—you’re doing damage to your own psychology. You train your mind to believe it’s okay to break trust with yourself. This develops into develop a pattern to where your mind doesn’t trust you. [5:15]Episode 464: Rewire your Mind: The Quality of Your Life Equals the Quality of Your Decisions Anytime you need to do something you don’t want to do in order to reach a goal, you must mentally associate something good or positive to that activity. This will allow you to manifest your goal much quicker. [6:25]Episode 465: The Power of Will When Will Smith was young, his dad taught him and his brother how to build a brick wall. This was slow, grueling work that overwhelmed them. His dad taught him not to focus on the wall, but to focus on laying each brick perfectly. This gave Will a life lesson about persistence, discipline, focus, and goals. [9:39]Episode 476: The Desire to Succeed Whenever a person is struggling or they fail, it’s usually because doubt got into their mind. Whenever doubt creeps into your mind, it attacks what you’re thinking about. Doubt is like a virus. It changes how you’re thinking about something. We start to believe the doubt and get emotionally involved with it. If you want to reach your vision and goals, and carry out your plan—you must protect your mind from doubt. [11:49]Episode 478: Everything is Preparing You for Something Greater How you meet current challenges will determine how prepared you are for future challenges. I never liked the idea that “God tests people and you have to be prepared to pass the test.” However, I do believe the challenges we experience are preparing us for something bigger and better down the road. [14:24]Episode 492: Passion is an Inside Job People often look in the wrong places to find what they love. We’re programmed to believe we need to “find our passion,” “find our purpose,” or “find something we enjoy doing,” so we can love our work. But this idea keeps people blind to it their whole life. The truth is, you can decide to change your attitude. Instead of looking at everything through a filter of hate, you can show up in a state of joy, love, and passion to whatever you’re doing. When you do this, you’ll be led right to the thing. [19:10]Episode 495: A Conversation with Quan Huynh I interviewed Quan Huynh about his experience in prison, and how he realized that he didn’t have to view prison as a punishment. Instead, he could view it as an opportunity to remake himself into a better person, while helping other men to do the same. He says the universe’s answer back to him was “Yes.” So he started to go in that positive direction. For the first time, he began hearing the sparrows chirp. They were probably chirping during his whole person term, but he never heard them until that moment. [21:34]Episode 503: Nice is Not a Value Being “nice” is not a value. Being kind is a value. Being nice is one of the biggest con jobs that people do to themselves and each other. It’s basically the idea that no matter how you feel, you must be nice. And you must trust someone who’s being nice. Neither of these behaviors are healthy. They can do damage in a person’s life. Trusting someone who’s nice can make you accept someone’s opinion or expertise, without question. And that’s dangerous. [23:56]Episode 504: Acres of Wisdom from The Biggest Little Farm Steph had a strong emotional reaction while watching the documentary, “The Biggest Little Farm.” It’s not a sad documentary—it’s a feel-good documentary. Having grown up with many great memories of being a child on a farm, Steph was amazed at how the documentary reflected universal truths in every aspect—including the law of cause and effect, and the law of polarity. [27:56]Episode 516: Sixty: The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones have been around for over 60 years, which is an unbelievable accomplishment. The band was formed in 1962, around the same time that the Beatles started to rise. If you go back to their roots, The Rolling Stones were “blues” guys. In their first albums, they were trying to be the next Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf. Eventually. they created their own interpretation of that music. Despite popular belief, they never had a chip on their shoulder about The Beatles. They were friends with them in real life. Their fans created a persona in which they were the rival of The Beatles. [30:47]Episode 518: Do You Want to Know the Truth or Do You Want to be Right? Whenever you get stuck—to the point where you can’t seem to move forward, come to a resolution, or know which decision to make—this indicates that you would rather be right than know the truth. A person will stay stuck if they don’t want to know the truth and if they have a need to be right. This need comes from the ego. It usually stems from childhood as a method of self-preservation. If you understand how to think, you can move yourself through this. Whether you ask for help or not, you must start training yourself to get to the answer. Otherwise, you’ll never make any progress forward. Let go of what’s untrue about the situation, so you can move to the truth. Thank you so much for such a wonderful year. We look forward to bringing you even more great content in 2023! Additional ResourcesInterested in finding out what type of leader you are? During this time of year, Steph and I get tons of questions on how to deal with family, boundaries, and heated conversations. Clients will often ask: “How can I stay in an abundance mindset when I’m surrounded by parents and extended family who have different beliefs than me?” “How do I talk with my family about my business?” “How do I not get triggered?”Most of us love our families and want to connect with them during the holidays. Being around different energy dynamics can be challenging, especially while traveling. In today’s episode, we discuss:How people in tend to put each other in a box—where they expect you to be a certain way How your parents and grandparents see you the same way they saw you as a child—through the lens of the limitations, behaviors, and emotions you had as a kid How I observed my family having the same conversations year after year—and the story of how my mom negatively reacted after I bought her a Christmas gift that she said she wanted Why family members judge you and get triggered by who you’re becoming (hint: whenever you change, you force others around you to change, because they have to adapt to your change) How comments like “Must be nice” are passive aggressive—and what you can do to change the conversation to something more positive Why Steph refuses to ask her husband how his day was, and what she asks instead How to navigate holiday gatherings like a champ with simple strategiesSteph shares 3 conversation starters that can help you learn more about your family and connect with them on a deeper level:1) If you could relive a past year of your life because it was so good—which year would you re-live, and why?2) What are you most excited about in your life right now?3) What are you grateful that you never have to do again?BT also shares his 3 “no fail” steps to take if you want to avoid minefields this holiday:1) Have no expectations.2) Be flexible.3) Use the S.T.O.P. An Inside View on the Netflix Documentary Stutz
**Spoiler Alert: This Episode Contains Massive Spoilers**Jonah Hill recently released the Netflix documentary Stutz, in which he has a vulnerable conversation with his therapist Phil Stutz. The documentary is Jonah’s attempt to honor his therapist’s life, while also sharing his tools and demonstrating a real-life therapy session .Within the first 20 minutes of the film, something feels off. Jonah comes clean with the audience, admitting that up until that point, they’ve spent two years trying to film the session. Jonah then shifts into vulnerability , which makes the rest of the documentary much more authentic .Jonah & Phil Stutz don’t have a typical patient . But in this case, their relationship helped both of them heal dramatically. In this episode, Steph and I discuss: The surprise twists that happen in the documentary—and “the big reveal” that takes place within the first 20 minutes that hooks you in and anchors you into what’s going on What stood out for both Steph and me about the film How therapists are trained to just sit across from someone and listen to their problems without interrupting or giving advice (and why Stutz says this is brutal) The tools Stutz gives to Jonah that seriously helped him in life, which anyone can use to quickly shift how they’re feeling How Stutz and Jonah both lost a brother—and how that experience completely disrupted Stutz’s life The three things that humans will always have—pain, uncertainty, and having to do the work How mistakes and pain are leading the way Jonah and his therapist developed one hell of a relationship . I see it as kind of a love story that turned out to be a healing journey for both of them. It shows that nobody has life all figured out —not even therapists. Everyone’s on a path of constant work, which means constant growth. I highly recommend you watch this documentary and pay attention to what jumps out at you as you watch it. Is Bragging in Business Bad?
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_561_Bragging_in_Business.mp3
In our Elite Mind 365 program, we did a marketing workshop with our students. Steph taught them a strategy called the “client win” email strategy where you share stories of your clients’ wins.
Interestingly, this idea was met with a lot of resistance. Our students had a hard time accepting the idea of sharing their clients’ success stories, because they were afraid to come across as bragging.
For many people growing up middle class, it wasn’t okay to talk about how good you are or to brag about anything. You were actually supposed to hide the things you were good at. This exactly is why many business owners keep themselves hidden today. Even on their websites, very few people have testimonials above the fold. This is another way to stay hidden, small, and safe.
Celebrating your wins and sharing them with the right people can actually be a growth experience. And sharing your client wins is one of the most effective forms of marketing to grow your business.
In this episode, Steph and I discuss:
Why social proof is the most effective form of marketing—because people can identify with the stories by saying, “I want that,” or “I don’t want that,” which then justifies their purchase
How showcasing how you help people allows others to see possibility for themselves
How many people didn’t get celebrated in their life as a kid growing up—instead, they were shamed, guilted, ostracized, and ridiculed for outshining others
How the feeling of being confused indicates you’re in self-sabotage (a strategy your subconscious mind uses to keep you exactly where you are)
Why I believe we must continually work on our self-esteem, or society will rip it apart
Steph’s experience shopping on Amazon for a donut pan that had 19,000 reviews
When it comes to your products or services, you always want people to say, “Yes, I want that,” or “No, I don’t want that.” You never want them to be stuck in the middle, saying, “I don’t know what I want.”
If you’ve ever said, “I don’t want to self-promote; I don’t want to brag; I don’t want to seem conceited”…this episode is for you!
Plus, Steph, BT, and I chat about our favorite donuts and how the industry makes a ‘hole’ lot of money annually.

The Secret to Closing More Sales
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_560-The_Secret_Behind_More_Sales.mp3
If you want to know the secret to closing more sales and have a consistent stream of income, you need to turn sales into a discipline—an ongoing process and habit in your business.
Inconsistent sales is a systemic problem. It reflects your mindset, urgency level, and skillset around sales. It also reflects your marketing and marketing cycle. Some businesses have a short marketing cycle, while others don’t see sales until 3-6 months after they’ve completed a marketing campaign. You need to know your market and your metrics in order to understand your marketing cycle.
In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:
How business owners get too comfortable, drag their feet, and delay in setting up systems and hiring the right people (which would create consistency in sales)
How people take their foot off the gas because they get distracted—and this shows up in their sales one, two, or three months down the road
Why you should know how to do sales yourself, before you bring on a salesperson
The two most important skills in sales—listening and knowing what questions to ask
Why you should shut up during a sales conversation—and after the person answers your question, you should ask them another question
Salespeople are the highest paid profession in the world. If you’re a competent sales person, there’s no limit to how much money you can earn.
Sales is a skill that involves listening, being quiet, quieting the voice in your mind with all the chatter going on—so you can really be present and hear what this person is telling you, and then be able to think through a response that’s adequate for moving them in the direction of “yes” or “no.
It takes discipline to keep the sales machine running. Dan Kennedy said that every day, you should do at least one activity that is a future sales-generating activity. Close a sale every day. Turn this into a habit in your business.

Advice is Too Cheap
https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_559-Advice_is_Too_Cheap.mp3
Advice is cheap and rampant on social media today. Many coaches and consultants are giving advice on things they’re not qualified to speak on. They’re not demonstrating results in those areas. They have no experience in what they’re speaking on, and they’re trying to teach on things they’ve never implemented, tried, tested, or used themselves. This is why advice is cheap.
The truth is, advice isn’t worth anything unless you raise your standard and change your mindset—so you can actually use the advice.
In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:
How people ask for advice and expect the person they’re asking o agree with their problem and come down to their level—but the truth is, you have to climb the ladder of achievement and discipline to rise up to THEIR level
How our childhood affects our ability to distinguish between good advice and bad advice
How making the wrong decisions in business and relationships can cause a lot of pain
Why we teach our clients to look at life through the lens of what they want to build and create for their future vision
A nasty experience I had years ago where I lost $5 million AND my email lis, because I wouldn’t spend $1300 to pay a lawyer to review a contract (I thought I could read it myself)
Steph’s experience losing $100k when she tried to create a software program that nobody wanted—she didn’t do any market research, didn’t have an agreement with her developer, and went in blind, thinking she could do it all herself
Communication can be so painful for people, especially in business—to say what you want to say, ask for what you need, or ask for clarity. People are so afraid of what others will think of them—they end up giving their power away instead of asking for help and getting the correct advice.
