A Conversation with Marc Polymeropoulos

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_555-Marc_Polymeropoulos.mp3 Marc Polymeropoulos is a retired CIA officer from the Senior intelligence service ranks. He served for years in the intelligence community, in the operational field and leadership assignments. He’s an expert in counterterrorism, covert action, and Human Intelligence Collection. As one of the CIA’s most decorated field officers, Marc honed a unique style of leadership based on decision making under pressure, inclusivity, camaraderie, and competition. He’s the author of Clarity in Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the CIA. Marc Polymeropoulos has a goal to pass on his knowledge to people in the sports and business world who could benefit from his unique experiences serving his country in the hotspots of the world. In this episode, Marc and I discuss: How Marc got into the CIA—and why he wants people to get excited about serving their country, whether it’s at the local, state, or federal level How his mom put him on an airplane by himself at age ten, and he flew from JFK Airport to Paris alone—then his dad drove them miles through the Sahara Desert (and this is what got Marc hooked on the Middle East) Principles on how to lead elite teams in times of crisis and how to deal with fear and uncertainty from a leadership perspective The process of recruiting a foreigner, a spy, and getting someone to betray their own country, by identifying their motivations How Marc was the base chief in Afghanistan for a year with 20 Americans and 1,000 Afghan indigenous fighters—and how being deployed taught him humility  How everyone at the CIA wants to be promoted quickly, but there’s something to be said for a slower, more methodical rise—because nothing beats experience Marc’s thoughts on Pineapple Express and how the U.S. blundered the exit from Afghanistan   Marc Polymeropoulos also shares how he had “a really awful end of his career,” due to Havana Syndrome. He got physically sick and experienced a loss of cognitive abilities, and didn’t get the help he needed.  “I was a highly decorated officer, rising to the top. I didn’t want to retire, but I had to,” he says. The clear leadership lesson for any organization is that, “You’ve got to take care of your people. And unfortunately, the CIA didn’t take care of me when I needed them most. It was a moral betrayal for me.”   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 555 –  A Conversation with Marc Polymeropoulos Clarity in Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the CIA CNN Interview w/ Kylie Atwood & Marc Polymeropoulos Get Social with Marc!      Twitter          LinkedIn       Great leaders are born out of diffcult situations. The Terror Barrier: The Gateway to Success

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_554-Mindset_Mondays-Terror_Barrier.mp3 Whenever you’re about to do something new, your subconscious mind will often create a circumstance or problem to distract you. It will try to get you to stop taking action. It does this, because it’s trying to protect you from the unknown. This phenomenon is known as the terror barrier. Growth is littered with terror barriers. Every time you do something to advance, you’ll always have something new to face. “New level, new devil.” It’s estimated that 80% of businesses fail within their first five years, and this is due to the terror barrier. It’s because the owner refuses to do things that are required for growth and which are outside their comfort zone. In this episode Steph and I discuss: How everyone has a terror barrier—and it develops at an early age Why 80% of people who go to personal development seminars never do anything with the information they learn (due to the terror barrier) How we, as parents, pass along our insecurities, terror barriers, and what we think we can’t do to our children, to try to protect them—and how this makes them less effective at life How the subconscious mind gets you to agree with the problem that seems to be in front of you, so that you’ll quit Steph’s skydiving experience in her 20s—and how “nothing could have prepared her for the onslaught of thoughts that plagued her as she was in the plane” How stepping through the discomfort and into possibility makes you feel better   Plus, I share the details of how I knew my marriage wouldn’t make it back in 1993—and how my own terror barrier was around that relationship (and divorce). I realized my ex-wife and I were on completely different tracks in life, headed for two different destinations. Vulnerability: Is It Good For Business?

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_554-Mindset_Mondays-Vulnerability.mp3 Being in business requires vulnerability. In fact, vulnerability is an essential part of growing. You’re vulnerable just picking up the phone and making sales calls. To get from 6 figures to 7 figures a year or higher, you need to create the right team. In order to build a team that stands behind you, you have to be vulnerable in your leadership. You must create a culture and environment in which your team can also be vulnerable with you, share ideas, innovate, and not be afraid to make mistakes. The fear of vulnerability is why many business owners don’t grow. People walk around with fear and anxiety, because they’re afraid to be vulnerable. Often, they were raised in an abusive or toxic environment. So they don’t know how to be vulnerable. By learning this skill set, you can bring calm, peace, and joy to yourself every day. In this episode, we discuss:   How NOT being vulnerable is like wearing armor, putting up a shield, self protecting, and not letting anyone see what’s under the armor How low retention rates are a huge problem for many businesses, and team turnover is really expensive, both in time and money What it takes to cultivate an environment that retains a team and builds a business  How most people are conflict averse and try to avoid conflict—but as a business owner, you have to learn to embrace conflict Why you must communicate your EXACT expectations to your team (which is also vulnerable—because what will people think of your expectations?) Why your relationships shouldn’t based on assumptions   You can’t innovate without vulnerability. You need to have bad ideas and make mistakes in order to innovate. Being vulnerable requires being courageous. You must be willing to open yourself up to whatever happens. Choose courage over fear. Are Your “Rules” Helping or Hurting Your Success?

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_552-Are_Your_Rules_Helping_or_Hurting_Your_Success_.mp3 We all have certain rules in place that we follow in our life, yet we’ve never questioned where they came from. We have rules about which foods we’ll eat, what places we’ll travel to, and which experiences we’ll allow ourselves to have (or not have). From the cars we buy, to the lipstick we wear, to how we make pot roast—rules control our lives, even if we’re not aware of them and even if they’re illogical. This conversation was inspired by our team’s discussion of the topic, “foods we would never eat.” Particularly—chocolate chip cookies dipped in apple juice. In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:   How we pick up behaviors, ideas, and ideologies from our parents while we’re growing up—and how many of these rules aren’t based on anything other than a belief How your subconscious mind uses RULES to keep you from doing what you want to do, having what you want to have, and experiencing incredible things that you might not even know you’re missing out on How rules can be unspoken, yet are handed down from one generation to the next, with no rhyme or reason as to why they exist How Steph never tried a banana until her 20s—because her mother hated them and made a face every time someone brought them up How Brandon didn’t get contact lenses for years, simply because his mom never had contacts (he changed this after Steph questioned him about it) How 7-figure business owners follow hidden rules about leadership that hamper their growth and suck their joy How as a kid, I was fascinated with Europe—and my father always told me, “You don’t want to go to Europe” (yet he’d never been there)   What rules do you follow? Why are you following them? Where are you letting someone else’s belief control your actions? What ideas did you take on that you never challenged? Developing rules is a way of staying safe and in control. Rules give us a level of certainty about something, even if it’s not true. In business, rules often create a value conflict that holds you back from growth—like not wanting to spend money on certain things, not wanting to go into debt, and not wanting to be “irresponsible” with money.   Links & Resources You Still Have Time to Join Us for The Art of Success Summit. –> CLICK HERE The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 552:  Are Your “Rules” Helping or Hurting Your Success? A Conversation with LTC Scott Mann (US Army, Retired)

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_550-Scott_Mann.mp3 Scott Mann is a retired lieutenant colonel who spent 23 years in the United States Army, 18 of which were as a Green Beret, the US Army Special Forces. He was a member of seventh Special Forces Group, working in Central and South America. I spoke with Scott Mann about his experiences in Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 attacks, as well as his thoughts on the recent withdrawal from Afghanistan, and how people were left behind. That event felt like a slap in the face to the American people and to the military, yet nobody is talking about it. Our senior leaders, political leaders, and even our generals aren’t acknowledging these issues. If people talk about it, their careers are being ended. Recruiting and retention for the U.S. military is in the toilet. 73% of veterans feel betrayed by the Afghan departure and the abandonment of our allies (there’s been an 81% spike in the VA hotline since August). All of this indicates we’ve got a serious leadership crisis on our hands. In this episode, Scott and I discuss: How the world shifted for the special operations community and Green Beret community after 9/11 The mental health challenges, suicides, post-traumatic stress, survivor’s guilt, TBI, and now COVID challenges that veterans have experienced, especially Vietnam veterans How some military officers and senior officers are basically politicians who have succumbed to the corrosiveness of power and careerism  How Al Qaida is reconstituting Afghanistan, and turning it back into a terrorist state How the United States has “lost our myth”—we no longer have a unifying, national myth that brings people together; storytelling is what binds us and gives us our sense of self How our current narrative is based on factions, tribalism, and divisiveness meant to stir up fear and anger  Scott Mann still has a lot of optimism about this country. He believes our best days are still in front of us. But it starts with us. Nobody else is coming. Leadership will come from the bottom up—from moms and dads, brothers and sisters, leaders, veterans, and business owners in a civil society. There needs to be accountability, personal ownership, lessons learned, mistakes acknowledged, corrections and adjustments made regarding what happened in Afghanistan. Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 550 –  A Conversation with LTC Scott Mann (Ret.) ScottMann.com Operation Pineapple Express Last Out: Elegy of a Green Beret Looking to take your mindset to the next level?  Be sure to stop over on The Successful Mind Podcast Channel on YouTube for EXCLUSIVE content that you won’t find anywhere in your audio podcast feed.  You can currently binge an entire series where David takes you through high level teachings around Raymond Holliwell’s classic book, Working With the Law.  If you’re ready to take the next step in exploring the Universal Laws and mindset it requires to be a huge success you’ll want to check this series out. Divine Timing: Is There Such a Thing?

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_549-Mindset_Mondays-Timing_Is_Everything.mp3 Timing is one of the biggest reasons why someone won’t take action on a goal they have right now. People often use divine timing as an excuse not to take action. It may appear as though God is saying, “Nope, this is the wrong time,” or, “This isn’t the right time.” But that is superstition. The truth is, you have the power to change any situation in your life, right now. Fear and ignorance get in the way of us creating the life we really want. Everyone has the same amount of time. The only time is now. If we’re not focused on the now, we’re either projecting into the future (worrying or escaping), or we’re dealing with a memory of the past (reminiscing). Neither one exists. In this episode, Steph Tuss and I discuss:   Why so many people are terrified of the present, because they have anxiety and don’t know what to do right now How worrying is the act of using your imagination incorrectly—people worry because they don’t know how to control their mind, and they don’t understand the laws of the universe  How people who were raised to be religious often weren’t taught that God is inside you—and we’re often taught to look outside of ourselves for everything How opportunity rarely shows up at “the right time” Why we need to get past superstition if we want to be successful What divine timing”really means and why people use it as an excuse   The idea of divine timing is superstition in the sense that there is a divinity outside of yourself. YOU are the divinity. You’re responsible for creating the life you want. We determine our own divine timing.   Links & Resources Learn more about The Art of Success Summit HERE The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 549:  Divine Timing: Is There Such a Thing Think & Grow Rich The Successful Mind Podcast Episode #151 – Divine Timing The Successful Mind Podcast Inside Episode #151 The Successful Mind Podcast Episode #2 – The Laws of the Universe The Successful Mind Podcast Episode #375 – Business & The Universal Laws You were BORN to be a success! Is This a Sign I’m Headed in the Wrong Direction?

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_547-Mindset_Mondays-Psychological_Safety.mp3 Whenever something bad happens, you might be tempted to think it’s the universe giving you a “sign” that you’re headed in the wrong direction. That’s actually not the case. When you set a big goal, make a decision to do something new, or take a risk in business—crazy stuff often shows up. This may seem like God or the universe is trying to stop you. But it’s actually your subconscious mind engaging in a sabotage pattern, trying to get you to quit. The universe doesn’t have a sense of humor. Nor is it “testing” you or giving you a big “clue.” There’s no old white guy in the sky or grand wizard behind the scenes, directing everything with puppet strings. Your mind is just hyper programmed to ask, “What does this mean?” Your subconscious mind wants to give meaning to everything, so that you can define it—which then tells you how to create a pattern to react to it, so that you don’t have to think about it. In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:   A text Steph got from a client who was shocked when someone asked for a refund (was this a “test”?) How to determine if you’re on the wrong path—and what the hidden meaning is in all the chaos showing up in your life  How people look for validation outside themselves to figure out if they’re making the right decision and doing the right thing All the crazy sh*t that happened in Steph’s life when she first made the decision to coach with me Why negative things show up after you make a decision to do something new—and how this is your subconscious programming hijacking your focus  Why personal responsibility is a MUST if you want any sort of success in life (complaining and being a victim is the exact opposite of personal responsibility) Why there are no “signs”—because you’ll see whatever you’re programmed to see, and you’ll interpret it however you’re programmed to interpret it   Chaos usually shows up when you’re stuck in a state of indecision or limbo. That’s when you create your own personal hell. Once you make a firm decision, all the chaos stops. What you call a “problem” in your life exists only because you’re giving it energy. You’re literally creating the problem; it’s just an illusion.   Links & Resources Learn more about The Art of Success Summit HERE The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 548:  Is This a Sign I’m Headed in the Wrong Direction? Understanding Psychological Safety in Business

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_547-Mindset_Mondays-Psychological_Safety.mp3 In business, psychological safety means that the people who work for you can work without the fear of repercussions if they make a mistake, challenge the status quo, or come up with an idea that doesn’t work. Psychological safety allows your team to be free to do their best without having to worry about being humiliated or made to feel “less than,” because their idea didn’t work out. Many organizations practice psychological safety, including Google. In fact, they credit their ability to innovate with how psychologically safe their organization is.  The problem is, many of us were raised in an environment that didn’t allow us to make mistakes. We were guilted, shamed, or humiliated instead of having our mistakes celebrated. So, as adults we have a tendency to hide our mistakes rather than bringing them forward, learning from them, and figuring out what caused them. Many of us also get triggered when other people make a mistake. In today’s episode, Steph and I discuss:   What happens when organizations aren’t psychologically safe (hospitals are a key example of this—where people end up getting hurt, because nurses aren’t allowed to point out the mistakes of doctors) How the highest performing, most innovative schools make it psychologically safe for kids to make mistakes  Why you should create a culture of psychological safety in your business, lead by example, sunshine your mistakes, and be vulnerable with your team  Why you shouldn’t hire “more of you”—because then you’ll have a bunch of you’s running around, saying yes to all of your ideas instead of innovating Why failing to have clear expectations creates an unsafe environment for your team—because people don’t know what expectations they’re trying to hit; they don’t know what is considered a win Why we get triggered and what’s at the root of it   Plus, Steph and I give examples of “nightmare bosses” we’ve witnessed throughout our lives. Some of our coaching clients are unknowingly creating a culture that’s the opposite of psychological safety, because they react to employees in a very harsh way.  Instead of getting angry with your underperforming team, make sure you set up measures of success or KPIs (key performance indicators) for each role that tell people when they’re successful   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 548: Mindset Monday’s – Understanding Psychological Safety in Business The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation and Growth by Amy C. https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM_Episode_546-Mindset_Mondays-The_Sly_Disguises_of_Fear.mp3 We often talk about the sly disguises of opportunity. But in today’s episode, Steph and I discuss the sly disguises of fear.   Many of the clients in our TEM90 program ask questions that show fear in disguise. They’ll ask about one thing, thinking they’re solving a particular problem—when really, the underlying issue is fear. There are many fears associated with being the leader of a company. People are often great at doing the thing they sell, but they don’t have the skills or knowledge to run the business from an operational standpoint. They have fear around those things. They think: “What if I do the wrong thing and someone leaves? “What if I don’t set this up right and I have to redo it all over again?” “What if I hire someone and I can’t pay them?” One of the big disguises of fear is resistance or procrastination. If you’re procrastinating—there’s something you’re resisting being, doing, or having. In today’s episode, we discuss:   How fear is designed to keep you alive  Why you must be mindful, so that you can spot fear in your mind before it takes control of your behavior and results How your decisions (or lack of a decision) can be controlled by fear—and this is tough to see sometimes, because your subconscious mind doesn’t want you to see that, because then you can change it How confusion is a key indicator of fear—and confusion is strategy of your mind to try to stop you from moving forward into the unknown Why, if you don’t have the results that you want in your business, you’re in resistance to something  How many business owners resist growing, because they don’t want to upset the apple cart   Plus, Steph shares the story of how she caught herself experiencing fear and procrastination while working on a project on the plane this past week. Most people want to move away from fear, but I think you should move INTO it. Fear is our friend. It tells you a tremendous amount of information about your next step. You can’t reverse engineer a multi 7-figure business if you’re in resistance. Maybe you need to make a decision about something. Whatever it is, procrastination exists because there’s some kind of fear underneath it.   Links & Resources The Successful Mind Podcast on YouTube – Episode 546: Mindset Monday’s – The Sly Disguises of Fear Are you ready to get over the fear of being seen?
