The Chris Voss Show Podcast – What Are the Odds: A Novel by David List
What Are the Odds: A Novel by David List
Amazon.com
The debut novel from screenwriter and producer David List, What Are the Odds, is an entertaining, binge-worthy, and addictive crime thriller.
Ray Dawson--a former NYPD detective unfairly forced into early retirement--never thought he would get another chance to be with his second wife, and love of his life, Stephanie. So, when she opens the door to the possibility, he spends his savings on an extravagant, romantic getaway at a resort in Costa Rica. But Ray is still as much a cop as he is a man, and when, in the hotel elevator, he has a chance encounter with Wilbur Bailey--a wily, neurotic, and environmentally conscious fugitive with a $5 million bounty on his head--things get complicated.
IRS Special Agent Phil Dancourt is determined to bust Mika Salko, the corrupt CEO of Houston based Amco Oil, and believes Wilbur Bailey--an Amco analyst with a conscience--is the one guy on the inside who could help bring Salko down. But in a bizarre twist, Bailey embezzles millions and disappears, putting Phil's job on the line. Now, after Wilbur is sighted in Costa Rica, Phil is sent to retrieve him. But from the moment he steps off the plane--and crosses paths with Ray and Wilbur--nothing goes as planned.
The encounter propels the three men into a harrowing, death-defying, life-changing, and often hilarious journey, attracting unwanted attention from a heroin-addicted dishwasher, a powerful, corrupt CEO, bloodthirsty gangs and drug cartels, and pandering government watchdogs. Along the way, they come face to face, in unexpected ways, with life's larger questions: friendship, love, loss, faith, and the commitment to values larger than oneself. What results is a trio of unlikely friends, and Ray can only hope that, once it's all over, Stephanie will still be there.

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – The Age of Outrage: How to Lead in a Polarized World by Karthik Ramanna
The Age of Outrage: How to Lead in a Polarized World by Karthik Ramanna
Amazon.com
A first-of-its-kind look at the outrage gripping organizations worldwide—and how leaders can respond to it.
Outrage is everywhere—on the left and on the right—and many companies have found themselves in the crosshairs. GoFundMe was pressured to cut off funding to protesting truckers in Ottawa. Disney's CEO was dragged down for mishandling both sides of Florida's "Don't Say Gay" law. Facebook and other tech companies have been accused of manipulating elections in many countries and by many parties.
People are angry with the world—in some cases, rightfully so—and now view companies as they do governments, as targets of their wrath and potential forces for social change. Managing outrage has moved from being an occasional leadership challenge, like handling a PR crisis, to a necessary and critical leadership capability, like strategic thinking or financial acumen.
Based on his popular University of Oxford leadership course and case studies on organizations such as IKEA, Nestlé, the Vatican, and others, Karthik Ramanna offers practical steps to make sense of the outrage, work with relevant stakeholders to progress through it, and emerge stronger for it. Ramanna's pragmatic framework, developed through years of experience with organizations, helps leaders "turn down the temperature," analyze root causes, develop and implement responses that are mission-consistent, and build resilience.
The Age of Outrage is an essential guide for leaders and their teams in this new era of polarization.About the author
Karthik Ramanna is Professor of Business & Public Policy at the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government and a fellow of St. John’s College.
An expert on business-government relations, sustainable capitalism, and corporate reporting & auditing, Professor Ramanna studies how organizations and leaders build trust with stakeholders. His scholarship has won numerous awards, including the Journal of Accounting & Economics Best Paper Prize, the Harvard Business Review-McKinsey Prize for “groundbreaking management thinking,” and three times the international Case Centre’s prizes for “outstanding case-writing,” dubbed by the Financial Times as “the business school Oscars.”
At Oxford, Professor Ramanna established the Case Centre on Public Leadership and the Transformational Leadership Fellowship, the latter a bespoke, by-invitation program for senior leaders looking to reimagine their public-service impact. In 2022, he co-founded the non-profit E-liability Institute, where he serves as principal investigator, with a mission to drive decarbonisation processes through rigorous GHG accounting. From 2016 to 2023, he was director of Oxford’s Master of Public Policy program that has educated over a thousand public leaders from about 120 countries. From July 2023, Professor Ramanna is on partial public-service leave from Oxford to advise the US Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, an “auditor of auditors” in global markets.
Previously, he was a professor and the Marvin Bower Fellow at Harvard Business School, teaching in both the MBA and senior executive-education programs. He has a doctorate from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. He lives in Oxford with his husband, Jon, and they enjoy dinner parties and touring Caravaggios.

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – The Prince of Evolution by David R. Wood
The Prince of Evolution by David R. Wood
Amazon.com
The Prince of Evolution is the evolutionary reframing of one of the most important and controversial political texts in history. It reframes Machiavelli’s The Prince as a text expressing a revolutionary political theory that expresses an evolutionary ‘best practice’ framework for political competition.
By applying the two patterns of evolution, natural and artificial, discovered by Charles Darwin and David R. Wood. In doing so it reveals new insights and value to be derived from Machiavelli’s original text. Most importantly, by providing an evolutionary framework for every human relationship that has ever existed, and reframes Machiavelli, the man, to be just as human as you or I.
The Prince of Evolution is a groundbreaking work that will disrupt the entire field of political science. And the way we all look at organizations, communities, and ourselves.

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – Left Adrift: What Happened to Liberal Politics by Timothy Shenk
Left Adrift: What Happened to Liberal Politics by Timothy Shenk
Amazon.com
A rivalry that remade the political world as we know it today
Politics today doesn’t look much like it did fifty years ago. Electorates that were once divided by economics—with blue-collar workers supporting leftwing parties while the wealthy trended right—are now more likely to split along cultural lines. Campaigns have gone high-tech, hoping to turn electioneering into a science. Meanwhile, a permanent class of political consultants has emerged, with teams of pollsters, message gurus, and field operatives. Taken together, all this amounts to a silent revolution that has transformed politics across much of the globe.
Left Adrift provides a new perspective on this transformation by following the lives of two political strategists who watched it unfold firsthand. Stan Greenberg and Doug Schoen were Zeligs of the international center-left, with an eerie talent for showing up at just the right moment to see history being made. But they could not stand each other. The mutual disdain was, partly, a result of professional jealousy, of decades spent nursing private grievances while competing for the same clients. But it grew out of a deeper conflict, a clash of political visions that raised fundamental questions about democracy itself. Left Adrift is about that battle—and the world it made.
