Osher Günsberg: Part 2 - A journey of sobriety and acceptance: leaving ‘that guy’ behind
Changing his name from Andrew to Osher (meaning happiness in Hebrew) may have been an ‘aggressive rebrand’ but for Osher Günsberg it helped put a space between the “him who was drinking and using and the him that got to live the rest of his life not being that guy anymore.” Years on, Osher is raw and real when he speaks about mental illness, addiction, sobriety and death. Tansel Ali: How storytelling, emotions and imagination help build a strong healthy memory
Episode 8: Tansel Ali Tansel Ali used to have a terrible memory. He’d forget people’s names, conversations he’d just had, numbers, and even had difficulties remembering what he just read. It was when he started learning ‘memory techniques’ that he realised his memory wasn’t bad, it was just untrained. Tansel was in his early 20s when he discovered memory training, at the same time he learned he needed serious stomach surgery, having been diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. So while he recovered in hospital he put his mind to work. Since then, Tansel has been crowned four-time Australian Memory Sports Champion, memorised two Yellow Pages phone books, authored two books, created educational initiatives for schools and helped people with dyslexia, ADHD, as well as high performance athletes, keynote speakers and corporate leaders. **We would like to say an extra special thank you to Tansel for recording this episode with us just a few days after his Dad had passed away, we so appreciated his willingness to sit down and chat and be so open. Penelope Jordan: The curious club for grown-ups sparking connection and taking the fear out being a first timer
Episode 7: Penelope Jordan A bike rave, Korean BBQ, bouldering and pole dancing are just a handful of new things the First Timers Club has tried, since kicking off in January 2024. And Penelope Jordan couldn’t be more thrilled that her idea for a club for curious grown-ups looking to connect with others, has taken off. The genesis for FTC came after she returned from a stint overseas and following Melbourne’s COVID lockdowns, when she and her friend Rosie held their first activity when it was just the two of them. But the popularity has grown, where complete strangers come together to do a thing, realising the ‘first time’ isn’t necessarily about the activity, but rather getting past the fear and anxiety of showing up in the first place. James Van Cuylenburg: Self-compassion, embracing your child self and the best kind of Angry Young Man
Episode 4: James Van Cuylenburg Ask Dr James Van Cuylenburg if he’d rather be a rock star or clinical psychologist and he simply can’t choose between his two loves. James spends his days helping others navigate life, and by night moonlighting on the stage as the great Billy Joel, among other music legends, performing across Victoria. While James primarily works with adults, couples and families in his day job, his fascination with how we are shaped as children remains a big focus, especially tapping into the child self and embracing the joy of childhood and the importance of imagination, play and fun. But he’s candid about what he sees as the biggest challenge for humans today, and that’s the growing need for self-acceptance and self-compassion, and his wish and goal to teach as many people as possible to give a generous read of themselves as they do for others. Callum Linnane: From Ballarat to The Australian Ballet, how self-discipline shot a humble dancer to the top
Episode 3: Callum Linnane Callum Linnane’s love affair with dance began at the age of seven at his primary school in Ballarat. And his determination, perfectionist tendencies and unbreakable work ethic underpinned his rise through the ranks of The Australian Ballet to be named Principal Artist in 2022 – a role he relished from a young age. Despite this incredible achievement, Callum is a humble human, described in Harper’s Bazaar as “the boy-next-door with a tinge of rock star he doesn’t know he possesses. His presence walks into a room before his body does.” Callum may have climbed this mountain, but he isn’t done yet, and his biggest wish is to build a better world where people are free to try new things and not ridiculed for their choices.
