5 Non-Golf Things You Should Do this Winter [#221]

Today, I’m going to give you 5 simple things that could change your game next year, but NONE of these involve hitting a golf ball this off-season. We believe that your body is the greatest piece of golf equipment you own, and (perfect timing with the PGA show coming up) this is the time when every golf gadget and piece of technology is running rampant with claims that they will be the “one stop shop shortcut” to helping your golf game. Haven’t we all tried (myself included) some of these shortcut gadgets that promise us amazing results with the least amount of effort? How well has this worked in the past? What is it that you really want when it comes to golf? What I’ve gathered speaking with some of the best coaches in the world, it’s primarily about eliminating the bad shots so each time you go out your playing your best game, and in order to do that, you have to take the time tuning and maintaining your best equipment: yourself. Highlights of this episode Fix Your Stuff – You’ve probably had some aches, pains, or ailments towards the end of this past season. Those lower back aches that just aren’t going away, or that rotator cuff sting at the end of your drive for example. These are the fine tunings that we need to nurse and care for on the off-season so we can hit the ground running when things warm up. Otherwise, you’ll be right back here next year with a WORSE injury. Find yourself a TPI practitioner, physical therapist, or trusted chiropractor that can help you get into the right shape for the new season. Move Every Single Day – It’s really easy to get cooped up inside at your house or office without that weekly reminder to get up and move. Without that usual movement schedule, you can forget how uncomfortable it is to swing a club, how long it takes you to warm up, proper swing rotation that can really set you back mentally and physically come the next golf game. This doesn’t even have to be crazy intricate or long yoga sessions, this can be short, targeted, specific workouts and drills targeting bigger problem areas. Our Golf Body Blueprints give you just that: daily targeted drills that not only keep you proactive about daily motion but keep you vigilant about your bodies health and limber through the off-season. Joint Circles/Motion Neck Shoulders/Trunk Back Hips Ankles Big Movements Squat/Lunge Row Push (Pushups/Presses) Hinge/Bridge Core/Abs/Rotation Leg work – You can’t skip leg day! It is such a prevalent issue with gym patrons that it has become a running joke. Start thinking about doing more with the lower body through lower body strength exercises. This is going to give you biggest bang for your buck regarding strength, power, cardiovascular endurance, and fat loss. You’re going to notice, if you haven’t worked out your legs, that once you incorporate some of these lower body exercises (split squats, lunges, hinging exercises,) you’ll not only feel fresher out on the course but even in everyday movement and motion. Grip Strength – Now, when I say grip I’m talking about the resiliency of the forearms, wrists, and hands. We put so much force through these extremities, both in our golf swings and in daily life, building up and maintaining strength and grip fortitude is something we should all be included into our exercises in the off-season. From heavy carries, heavy dumbbells, and changing your hand positions in your exercises (palms up, down, hammer grip, etc.) there are a ton of ways to stay cognizant of your grip. One of our favorite ways is to incorporate the Fat Gripz into your everyday lifts. You can see The video we did on Fat Grips Here! Superspeed Golf – The Superspeed Golf Overspeed System is one of the simplest, most effective things you can do when it’s cold out, practically anywhere, 2-3 times a week to make the largest difference in your off-season fitness. These things will not only keep you swinging throughout the winter which will keep up, if not improve, your swing speed but also will build up different styles of motion because these have you swing both right and left-handed, working on acceleration and deceleration and rotation. If you have any questions or want to find out more about Superspeed golf, check out our episode with Matt & Kyle from Superspeed. Watch Adam Long’s highlights from his win at the Desert Classic! Golf Tips are Worthless | Chuck Quinton | Rotary Swing [#219]

This week, we are talking with one of the original pioneers of the online golf instruction world, Chuck Quinton.  Chuck originally started out in 2004 selling small golf instruction DVD’s and has now turned his website, RotarySwing.com, into one of the premier online golf instruction websites in the world. Over the course of the last 14 years, he has built a community of 350,000 students that utilize the platform of RotarySwing. I met Chuck back in 2008 and through our recent guest, Ed Mylett on episode 216, Chuck and I reconnected to get him on the show and introduce you to the Rotary Swing Community. In this episode we talk about Chuck’s fascination with what the body, joints, and muscles are doing in a golf swing, the way individuals learn using our brain and body’s physiology, why you should follow a certain sequence when learning a new movement pattern or a new part of the golf swing, how Chuck came back from a major injury and how that affected him as a teacher, and why he believes “golf tips are worthless.” Chuck Quinton’s Background Chuck Quinton is the founder of the Rotary Swing and the former Teaching Professional at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado. He also founded the Rotary Swing Golf Academy at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, FL where he teaches during the winter months. He is the author of “The Rotary Swing” golf instruction book that has sold thousands of copies worldwide as well as the instructional DVD series, “Swing Plane Made Simple” and “Short Game Made Simple”, and most recently the “Rotary Swing Tour Certification Manual”. His instructional website, RotarySwing.comis one of the largest golf instruction sites on the internet today with thousands of visitors per day and is host to over 300 instructional videos that Quinton has created, as well as over 150 articles he has written. He has been featured as a guest on ESPN Sports Radio numerous times, as well as numerous local radio shows around the country. He has helped thousands of students of all abilities, including players on the PGA Tour, Web.com Tour, European PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, Futures Tour, Hooters Tour, Gateway Tour, and numerous other mini-tours. He credits his thousands of hours of tireless research, continuing instruction, and hard work that his site and the Rotary Swing has come about. Highlights from this Episode  The history behind Chuck Quinton’s love for golf and the conception of RotarySwing through frustration at the lack of accessible and useful golf instruction that was standardized and systematic at the time, as well as how he started making the initial DVD’s that led to his subscription-based stream-able video content in real time. His sports injury from 2011 that led him with a broken neck and how that led him through an arduous recovery that revolutionized his coaching and an appreciation for his golf students. He breaks down his panel of medical professionals that joined up with him to not only research what the ideal golf swing looks like, but also how the body is designed to both safely and powerfully swing a golf club and the most common preventable injury that he and his panel see. We talk on the learning process and differentiate kinesthetic learning vs. intellectual learning in terms of the benefits of one over the other in terms of focus when learning a new move, position, or golf swing. The RST Roadshow: What made him decide to travel around the nation giving out free golf lessons and filming them to show what his coaching can do for you average joe golfer. He also talks about the link to find out more about his free lesson program. The RGV Tour: Living in an RV Down by the Golf Course with Patrick Koenig

Today I am especially excited to bring on our special guest, Patrick Koenig, Founder of the RGV Tour. Have you ever wanted to just quit your job and go on an endless golf trip, traveling around the states, playing the best courses, hanging out with golfers from all over the country, golfing with celebrities, and doing it all in a pimped out RV? If you said yes, you basically just described the RGV Tour and the life of our guest, Patrick Koenig. Patrick decided to quit his job about a year ago and pursue his passion for golf and golf photography. He bought an RV, decked it out (including a rooftop driving range,) named his adventure the “Recreational Golf Vehicle Tour” (RGV Tour) and invited anyone and everyone to come out a play with him. To this date, he has played over 360 golf courses since last February, played in 47 states with over 700 golfers and travelled over 32,000 miles in the RGV. Today we get a VIP pass into the last 10 months of the tour; the story behind it, the antics, and it’s future moving forward. Patrick Koenig’s Background Patrick Koenig is an avid golfer who loves to capture some of the outstanding moments he encounters on the golf course through amazing photography. His mission is to share my stories, excitement and love for the game of golf with others. He resigned from his sales position, purchased a recreational vehicle (RV), and turned it into a recreational golf vehicle (RGV) where he is touring the country playing golf raising money for kids and golf. The best part about the RGV Tour is that it will be raising money for a worthwhile cause, The First Tee of Seattle.  The First Tee of Greater Seattle positively impacts the lives of young people by building character, instilling life-enhancing values and promoting healthy choices through the game of golf. Patrick believes that every aspect from his relationships to his finances has changed for the better because of golf. With an original goal to present a check for $10,000 at the season-ending check ceremony, The RGV Tour has successfully crushed the original goal and has currently raised over $17,000 for The First Tee of Great Seattle. Highlights from this Episode Patrick starts the episode by giving us some background on the RGV tour and its inception. Everything from what his life was like before the RGV tour to what inspired him to take this unconventional leap from his 9-5 to touring the country playing golf in all 50 states. How he is raising money for the great cause, The First Tee of Great Seattle, and also how every donation is going straight to the cause and not into his gas tank. He is completely funding this tour out of his own pocket. The balance between playing golf and shooting golf photography, and how he was able to get such great pictures/drone footage of some of the top courses in the states. The highlights from the tour, pros, and celebrities he played with on the tour like Bill Clinton, where he could and could not play, and how improvised some of the on-the-fly planning was when traveling from state to state. The experience, demands, and tolls on his body and fitness while traveling for the last 10 months and playing golf every day. He gives us the inside look at what he does to stay healthy and lean (through his patented “Swedish Fish” Diet.) He also dives into the different stats he has collected (Distance traveled, birdies within 2 feet of the hole, courses played, etc.) His take on the age-old question here at 18Strong: Playing more often and beating balls vs. playing less and more technical. He also dives into how his golf game has improved from playing over 300 rounds over the last 10 months. Parting Questions Caddy Shack or Happy Gilmore? Caddy Shack What would your walk-up song to the first teebox be? “Seek and Destroy” by Metallica 18 Holes anywhere in the world with anyone, past or present: Where would it be and whom would you play? Jesus, Bill Murray, and my Dad at Cyprus Point Any last piece of advice for the 18Strong Community?  Golf hard and have fun with it! His wife Kristianna, who had been his sweetheart since they were teenagers, shared that same vision of life. Her father was an engineer who worked hard so her mother could stay home with her six children. The idea of putting together little commitments, and utilizing fitness to both build your confidence and carry you to your goals. How being honest with yourself and setting physical goals that you can attain daily, weekly, monthly can transform your confidence and thus success. The reality that some athletes find that their sport and athletics come easily to them.  On the other hand, many world-class athletes simply figured out that working harder than the rest and loving the work you put in to hone your game is what breeds their long-term success. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to play in your very first PGA event, with the nerves, the grandstands, the crowds, well, today we’re talking with Hayden Buckley, who recently had a chance to play at his first PGA tour event. Hayden, a newly turned professional golfer, is just finishing up his degree at the University of Missouri (Mizzou), received asponsors exemption at the Sanderson Farms Invitational.  And, not only did he get in the event, but  Hayden was able to battle through Thursday and Friday to make the cut in his very first PGA appearance. If you’re looking for insights into all of the pieces you need to play better, this episode with Stewart Hagestad, one of the worlds top amateur golfers is a can’t-miss interview. You may recognize our guest’s name from Gold Digest, or the many mentions and appearances on the Golf Channel.  While many golfers all over the world envy Stew’s game and wonder why on earth he doesn’t want to take his talent to the PGA Tour, Stew has big plans both on and of the course and is adamant that he will remain an amateur golfer for life. At 27 years old, Hagestad has played at the highest of levels and yet decided long ago that he did not want to pursue a professional career in golf. In this episode, Stew shares his story, why he decided not to play professional, and his experiences playing with the titans of the game in the greatest golf events in the world. I found this interview to be a great example for you, the golfers in the 18Strong community trying to figure out how to balances his work schedule with his golf, practice, and fitness schedules. Stew Hagestad’s Background Born in Newport Beach, CA, Stew grew up playing with the likes of Justin Thomas and Jordan Speith. Hagestad played his college golf for the USC Trojans where he graduated with his Degree in Business and moved to New York to be a Financial Analyst. Hagestad won the 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateur, earning a spot at the 2017 Masters Tournament. He became the first U.S. Mid-Amateur champion qualifier to make the cut at the Masters. Hagestad finished in a tie for 36th place, and won the Silver Cup as the lowest-scoring amateur. Despite his performance, he stated that he has no desire to turn professional. He also won the 2016 Metropolitan Amateur, represented the U.S. in the Walker Cup under Spider Miller, and played in the U.S. open in 2018.  Highlights from this Episode  His background in golf growing up and what lead him to pursue golf the way he has. What deciding between his business career and golf career looked like and why he has chosen to stay amateur. His experiences at the Master’s, the Walker Cup, and how the Mid-Amateur launched him into being able to compete in the top events. What his golf, career, fitness, and personal goals look like, how he goes about goal setting, planning, and attaining his goals. Although this sounds like a lot to put on, he breaks it down into a “golf season” and a “non-golf season” to help set him up for success. What his workouts look like, especially in the off-season, to get him prepped and ready for the golf season, to not only perform at his peak but also to prime himself to play at his best right at the start of the season. What surprised him the most regarding the lifestyle when going out to these major events, what the players go through during that week that he enjoyed and that aren’t so great that your average golfer doesn’t realize. Parting Questions: Caddy Shack or Happy Gilmore? Happy Gilmore What would your walk-up song to the first tee box be? Something with Third Eye Blind. 18 Holes anywhere in the world with anyone, past or present: Where would it be and who would you play? Arnold Palmer and George W. Bush at Augusta And to prove my theory that Stew resembles a younger George “W” Bush . . . What is the coolest non-golf thing you have gotten to do because of your golf accomplishments? I was broadsided in an interview on CNBC by Kevin O’Leary aka “Mr. Wonderful” (Watch the video) Any last piece of advice for the 18Strong Community? 212: Robert Yang | Your Guide to Fueling Better Golf

This week we are talking all about nutrition specifically for you, the golfer, with Robert Yang. Rob is a certified nutritionist and strength and conditioning specialist who has been in the fitness industry for over 20 years. Rob was on the 18Strong Podcast back on episode 42 and we wanted to bring him back to talk about his new book “Hole-in-One Nutrition.” You’ll hear me brag on him and this book in the episode, and with good reason. I believe this is one of the best nutrition books that I’ve read from the ability of someone who is able to read who is not in the field of fitness, nutrition, or medicine. Rob has really written this in a way that is both easy to understand and address a lot of common concerns. You are going to hear Robert talk about hydration for the golfer in a way that you haven’t heard about before, breakfast, building muscle as you age, and what you as the fitness minded golfer need to know to maximize your potential by what you do nutritionally. Robert Yang’s Background Robert Yang specializes in nutrition, nutritional supplementation, strength and conditioning, corrective exercise, and lifestyle coaching. His integrative and individualized programs have helped athletes and individuals improve performance, prevent injuries, and improve health and vitality. Robert’s clinic is located in Encinitas, California, where he maintains an active practice designing corrective, performance enhancement, rehabilitative, and sports performance exercise programs. Robert Yang, top fitness and nutrition expert, and owner of RYI studio, is among the nation’s most sought-after exercise and nutrition authorities. Always staying on the cutting edge, Robert is in high demand as a nutritionist and strength coach for professional athletes, golfers, and celebrities. His client roster includes the likes of Morgan Hoffman, Ken Block, Michelle Wie, Drew Brees, Steve Delabar, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, I.K. Kim, Carlota Ciganda, Belen Mozo, Rashaan Salaam, Andy Dalton, Rob Dyrdek, Ben Crane, John Graham, John Beck, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano. Robert is a sought-after international presenter and lecturer. He is an advisory board member for the Titleist Performance Institute and the National Pitching Association. As one of the lead instructors for the TPI Certified Golf Fitness Instructors Certification, Robert teaches Olympic lifting and optimal post-workout supplementation. He regularly teaches courses on corrective exercise and nutrition. Robert has been published in magazines such as Golf Digest numerous times and Natural Solutions Magazine (Formerly Alternative Medicine Magazine). Robert is a graduate of the University of California Santa Barbara with a Biopsychology and Exercise Health Science degree. He is licensed by the American Health Science University as a Certified Nutritionist. He is a CHEK Level 4 and a HLC 2 practitioner. Robert also holds a Level 1 coach’s certification in Olympic style weightlifting from the United States Weight Lifting Federation (USWF). As an athlete, husband and father Robert understands the needs of his clients and strives to stay on the cutting edge of training, supplementation, nutrition, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement. Robert is continually traveling, researching, and studying the best methods to help individuals achieve their ultimate goal. Highlights from this Episode His views on the original Food Pyramid by the USDA and how his revised Pyramid both uses that as a foundation and builds off of it and how the different diets stack up in terms of balance. Hydration: The base of his nutrition Pyramid and why he puts so much value into proper hydration. He talks about how, unlike food, which we can store as fat, we don’t have a reservoir for water so there IS a difference between drinking water as compared to tea, coffee, Gatorade, beer, etc. The importance of instituting salt into nutrition plan because of how much sodium is lost to sweat and how it helps get the water into the right places in your body. The ideal breakfast for the performing athlete: the importance of drinking 25% of your daily water right when you wake up and how whatever you eat for breakfast is going to dictate how you play later in the afternoon. The idea that we can’t compete with the aging atrophy of the fibers of our muscles and it is ‘use it or lose it’ in terms of our strength as we age.
