That's not how we can build relationships with people. So, um it's really important to sort of separate ourselves, I think from our services and from our business so that it's not quite so entangled with our self worth. [00:00:24] spk_0: Hello and welcome to just between coaches, the podcast that tackles difficult coaching conversations. Head on. My name is Melinda Cohen and I run a business called the coaches console. The coaches council has supported more than 50,000 entrepreneurs and creating their own profitable coaching business. Yeah. Today we're going to talk about a difficult but important topic and a reaction you'll probably confront more than once in your business career. I'm talking about price resistance as your business experience and expertise grows, There inevitably comes a time when you decide you want to raise your rates to better reflect the value of your services or maybe a new client is resisting your existing price. How do you tell your clients and what do you do when someone resists your price to talk about this? Today, I've invited Bumi Patek, the CFO at morrissey. But before I bring Bumi on I'm going to read a listener mail from a coach that reflects today's topic. As I've said in earlier episodes. Unless you tell me otherwise, any email that you send me that we read on the air will be anonymous. We want to make sure it encourage you to be open about what's troubling you without worrying about what your clients might think. Here's what anonymous had to say. Dear Melinda. I have an old client that wants to rehire me and my services. She would be a great client for me and my services are exactly what the client wants and needs. But we are stuck regarding the price. She is reluctant to pay my current rate. I am convinced my pricing is fair but I'm starting to feel insecure about it. How do I argue for my pricing? Should I make an exception in this case? Dear anonymous. I am so glad you brought this topic up. It can definitely be tough for coaches to talk about money but I have to tell you from the get go. I never argue for my rates. I argue for the clients results. If you get into a discussion about pricing before you've established the value of your services that will result in a bidding war. That's never a conversation I want to get into. In fact, if my clients are objecting to my rates or want to negotiate my rates, that's a big red flag that tells me they're making coaching all about the money and not about the results. It's also assigned to me that I need to shift the conversation. I need to get the conversation refocused on the value that my coaching will provide today. On just between coaches is our guest. Bumi Patek. Bumi is the chief financial officer at morrissey. She also works very closely with morrissey's aces. Coaches welcome. Bumi [00:03:06] spk_1: great to be here, Melinda. [00:03:08] spk_0: I'm so excited to be here and to be talking with you about this topic. I couldn't think of a better person to have on the show for this. [00:03:15] spk_1: Well thank you. I'm excited. It's such an important topic. We serve a community of coaches and consultants. A lot of our coaches and consultants to work with us. They struggle this exact same issue. [00:03:24] spk_0: Bumi, could you please tell us a little bit about yourself and y...

Special "Business Revenue Leak Checklist" offer free at http://www.mrse.co/leak.Here's the link to learn more about Danny's special offer: http://www.Mirasee.FM/intensiveI should do this. I should do that. Are you hearing a whole lot of “I should” from your coaching clients, but they’re not making progress on their desires and dreams? Have your clients been should-ing themselves to death? Have you? How do you motivate your coaching clients to take action and follow through? And what's the harm in engaging in a little should-ing anyway? In this episode of Just Between Coaches, senior coach and host Melinda Cohan invites her coaching colleague, Micène Fontaine, an entrepreneur at Designarts.org, and a former ACES coach at Mirasee, to address this common coaching challenge. During this session, they’ll discuss how coaches can help their clients tackle the very common habit of should-ing.In this episode we discuss:Why do we “should” all over ourselves?Whose story are you telling when you “should” yourself? How does it help to take the BMW (bitch, whine, moan) around the block?Does the habit of should-ing differ depending on demographics?“It's a very cathartic way of letting go of those stories that are not ours.” – Micène FontaineGuest bio: After a chance encounter with a yellow elephant, Micène Fontaine left his role as an ACES Business Coach and shifted his focus inward to explore creativity, its role in business and personal development. When he is not doodling, writing, running, or baking blueberry pies, Micène runs a lifelong learning organization (Design Arts Seminars, Inc.) that helps design professionals leverage the power of design and architecture to solve today’s most pressing societal and environmental challenges. Micène writes a blog on Change by Design and occasionally appears on Podcasts such as this one :-) You can connect with Micène on LinkedIn or nurture your own yellow elephant on Instagram or at micene.com.Resources or websites mentioned in this episode:Micène Fontaine @ Designarts.org Mirasee Coaches Console Credits:Guest - Micène FontaineHost - Melinda CohanProducer - Cynthia LambExecutive producer - Danny InyWriter - Melinda Cohan, Michi Lantz, and Cynthia LambAssembled by - Geoff GovertsenAudio Post Supervisor: Evan Miles, Christopher Martin Audio Post Production by Post Office SoundMusic soundscape: Chad Michael Snavely If you don't want to miss future episodes of Just Between Coaches, please subscribe to Apple podcasts or Spotify or wherever you're listening right now. [00:00:22] Melinda: Hello and welcome to Just Between Coaches, the podcast that tackles difficult coaching conversations head on, My name is Melinda Cohen, my company, the coaches console has supported more than 50,000 entrepreneurs in creating their own profitable coaching businesses. Today we're going to talk about a very common and equally important topic that all coaches have to deal with. Mm it's a tendency, even a habit of so many of us I'm talking about should ng, I should do this, I should do that. What's the harm? And engaging in a little shooting? My coaching colleague, Micène Fontaine, an entrepreneur and an aces coach at mere seat will explain in just a few minutes, but to start off the episode, I'm going to read an email that we received from a listener, it's from a coach who wants to remain anonymous and a little side note here. Unless you tell me otherwise, any email that you send me that we read on the air will be anonymous. We want to encourage you to be open about what's troubling you without worrying about what your clients might think. Mm Hi Melinda. I'm having trouble with a client of mine staying on track and trusting the process. He perceives that he should be ahead of where he actually is. He's very determined and devoted to his businesses vision. But there's a gap between his vision and reality. He's constantly in the mindset of I should be at such and such a level by now or he'll say something like if I had only gotten 10 more students in my course, I would be seen as an expert. His constant should've woulda Coulda is getting in his way. He's losing his motivation and momentum and what can I do to help him anonymous? I understand I have experienced this a lot. My clients, my students, other coaches, everybody, we all should all over ourselves. My very first coach, which was 19 years ago now very directly pointed it out to me, Melinda. She said you're shutting all over yourself. But is this a problem that is fixable? Or is this just an inevitable human behavior? What is this should-ingthing about? Why do we do it? And is it always a harmful thing? Yes and no. Let me explain when we're stepping out of our comfort zone, going for a goal or our desire. We start to talk about the things we should do to get there. The kind of should-ingkeeps us in forward motion. We feel like we're making progress even when we may not be making as much progress as we like. That can be helpful. Should that Should is also a way to set intentions. If we have awareness, we can say let's move from a should intention to an action i...

Dependency – Do Your Coaching Clients Depend on You Too Much? (Jim Wright)
Special "Business Revenue Leak Checklist" offer free at http://www.mrse.co/leak.Episode summary: All coaches recognize that they should be helping their clients become more competent and self-reliant. If the coaching relationship isn’t doing that, it’s very likely that the client will become overly dependent. Coaches can, subconsciously, have an economic incentive to ignore the problem of client dependency, creating a potential conflict of interest. It’s natural for them to want to expand their business, but the best coaches put their clients’ interests first. A coach should equip their clients with the skills and confidence to navigate their own journey. But what if your client starts showing signs of dependency, and wants you to tell them what to do and how to do it? What then? Melinda Cohan, our senior coach and host, invites Jim Wright, a coach for course creators at Mirasee, to talk about how to recognize and navigate dependency. They’ll discuss what dependency is and is not, and how coaches can establish necessary boundaries. In this episode we discuss:What are the indicators or signs that a client might be becoming dependent on you? What are the roots of dependency? What tools can coaches use to help their clients be less dependent? When is enough enough when it comes to dependency? “I think as a coach, probably the single biggest gift you can give someone is to let them know that they can do it, that they have that power.” – Jim WrightResources or websites mentioned in this episode:Mirasee Coaches Console Guest Coach Bio:A writer, teacher, coach, and advocate for clarity in communication, Jim joined Mirasee as a course-building coach in 2018. (Jim Wright)[00:00:01] Signature sound: Mirasee [00:00:06] Jim Wright: as we get older we get more and I don't know if it's, you know, societal pressure or peer pressure, but we, we don't want to look like, we don't know what we're doing, we don't like to make mistakes, we don't want to look stupid so that freezes us I think and you just want somebody to give it to you or give you the solution or do it for you. [00:00:32] Melinda Cohan: Hello and welcome to just between coaches, the podcast that tackles difficult coaching conversations. Head on. My name is Melinda Cohen and I run a business called the Coaches Console. The Coaches Console has supported more than 50,000 entrepreneurs and creating their own profitable coaching business. Today we're going to talk about an interesting and important topic, a subject you'll have to dive into if you're a coach or thinking of becoming one, I'm talking about dependency, but first let's define dependency from my perspective. It's the inability to move forward without someone or something being present. Like a coach should equip their clients to navigate themselves on their own journey. Clients shouldn't require me to tell them what to do or how to do it. I actually tell my clients this when they hire me, I say if I do my job at the end of our, let's say, three month agreement, you won't need me anymore, you might need me for a different topic, but you won't need me for this particular topic. And so I start out with the transparency so that they know right out of the gate that this is about empowering them to navigate their life to talk about dependency. Today I've invited Jim Wright. Jim has been helping and supporting clients for 20 years, he has also a coach for course creators at Mirasee.
