Get Invested: The freedom conundrum: Is freedom a friend or 'faux'?

What does freedom mean to you? How much freedom do you have and enjoy? Freedom, fulfilment and happiness seem to be what we are all chasing – but what does freedom really mean? Freedom for me is having the choice to do what I like, when I like, where I like with who I like. It is about choice. On one hand, we have never had so much freedom of choice. But at the same time, our level of perceived happiness seems to be decreasing and there has never been a higher growth in the incidence of anxiety and depression. So today I want to explore this conundrum in some detail, drawing on Barry Schwartz’s excellent observations and insights from his book ‘The Paradox of Choice – Why More is Less’, and share some strategies on how you can fully enjoy your freedoms without suffering some of the apparent side effects. Get Invested is the podcast dedicated to time poor professionals who want to work less and live more. Get Invested: Part 2: Property learnings and opportunities with Doron Peleg

We continue our mini-series on property investment learnings and insights.  Did you know that over 555,000 of residential properties are bought in Australia each year and between 25- 35% of these being investment properties? Now I know first hand how good property investment can be to help you enjoy a great lifestyle, yet sadly only 5% or 1 in 20 investors achieve sustainable success. And unfortunately property investing is the second most common reason that Australians lose money. Why is this? Many private property investors and home buyers want to invest in property and ‘live the dream’, but are often not informed enough about the risks that come with it due to: - The sheer volume of investment information providing conflicting advice - Interested parties such as real estate agents and developers providing biased advice - Reliance on existing property reports that only focus on current or past market values, data or conditions So one of the key secrets for success in property is to access current, high quality independent and objective forward looking research based on the key investment criteria integrated with economic forecast algorithms – and the only place you are going to find this in Australia is with Riskwise Property Research - check them out at www.riskwiseproperty.com.au. So to help you tackle the future and invest with confidence, this episode is part 2 of our special chat with Doron Peleg. Last episode we looked at the past, summarised the learnings and reinforced the benefits of adopting Riskwise’s unique macro to micro research approach. If you haven’t listened to part 1, go back and have a listen to this first as it forms the basis of today’s forward-looking discussion. Now we take last episode's learnings and look to the future. We glean Doron’s well informed and intelligent insights into what is likely to happen that will influence property nationally and conclude with a detailed run down on where are the best areas to invest across the country moving forward if you’re looking for sustainable growth. So if you want to know what is likely to happen with your property in the future or you want to know what to invest in - and where - then you can't afford to miss today’s informative insights. Go back and listen to Part 1 of this discussion here. Get Invested is the podcast dedicated to time poor professionals who want to work less and live more. Get Invested: Part 1: Property learnings and opportunities with Doron Peleg

As we start a new year and a new decade, it is a great time to reflect on the past, learn from it and plan what we’ll do to optimise our opportunities in the future.   So that’s exactly what we’re going to do in this two-part special on the Get Invested podcast.  In part one, we focus on what has happened in property nationally over the last couple of years and what lessons we gleaned from it.  In the next episode we will focus on the future – what’s in store in the year ahead from the macro to the micro level, what impact will this have on property in Australia and where should you invest if you’re looking for sustainable success.  And to help shed some light on this there’s no-one better qualified or better positioned than special guest Doron Peleg.   For those of you who have been listening to Get Invested for some time, you will remember Doron from episode 24 where he opened our eyes to successful property investment principles and the benefits of his unique forward projecting research from his company Riskwise – if you haven’t had a listen to this episode then it is a great listen so check it out.    As the CEO and Founder of RiskWise Property Research - Australia's most innovative independent research house - Doron has more than 20 years experience in risk management including time as an Executive Manager at Westpac.  If you’re looking for true independent objective and most importantly forward projecting research on every state, suburb and property in the country, check it out at www.riskwiseproperty.com.au.    So if you’re an existing property owner, a potential property purchaser or an existing or aspiring property investor wanting to know what to expect, what to do and where to do it, you can’t afford to miss this very insightful series.  In addition to reviewing what has happened in the world of property and finance over the last few years and the lessons that this teaches us, today we learn about the benefits of Riskwise’s unique macro to micro property research approach, how you can acquire what he classifies as a ‘triple A rated property’ and what information you can and need to access so you can make better informed property decisions based on the future, not just the past.  Get Invested is the podcast dedicated to time poor professionals who want to work less and live more. Get Invested: Best books and podcasts of 2019

Now this time of the year is a great time for reflection and a chance to recharge your batteries, so I’m going to challenge you to make the time to read and listen to podcasts as a way of filling your tank with inspiration and motivation. Just trade some time that you spend watching or listening to the news or scrolling through social media and replace it with some good book or podcast listening time – you will be amazed at how you start thinking and seeing things differently. As a constant reader I have a library of books, both in hard copy and on my kindle reader that goes everywhere with me. Because to me, to stop learning is to die on the inside. I’ve always got at least three to four books on the go at the same time, so I read to suit my mood. I generally start the day with self-development books and podcasts when I’m at the gym. I listen to something inspirational and motivational when I am in the shower, and I finish the day with fiction books so I can relax into sleep. And yes, I love to read in the ultimate man cave, which is code for the toilet. So to get you started and whet your appetite, in this episode is a quick list of my favourite books and podcasts. I’ve broken them into sections around the three cornerstones of success - being self, health and wealth - along with some specific property books and podcasts. Hopefully this episode has given you some good reading and listening material to get your grey matter working. But I’d also love to hear your favourite books and podcasts, so email me on bushy@khgroup.com.au if you have others that would be worth sharing. Get Invested: Joining the data dots between people and property with Nerida Consibee

If you’re researching property, there’s more information available than we can handle. How do we make sense of it all? We tackle this challenge with Nerida Conisbee, Chief Economist with the REA Group who is changing the way the world views property — REA is the parent company of realestate.com.au, realcommercial.com.au and a host of other digital property businesses globally. Nerida is recognised as one of Australia’s leading property experts. She provides regular market commentary to a wide range of Australian media outlets across digital, print, television and radio. She has more than 20 years of property research experience throughout Asia Pacific and has held senior positions within commercial agencies and major consulting firms over this time. Her expertise covers residential and commercial property from both an investor and occupier’s perspective. Nerida also holds a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours and a Masters of Commerce, majoring in Econometrics. With nearly seven million searches a day and over five million Australians using the realestate.com.au website every month (that’s one in four of us), Nerida has a very fine tuned sense of what’s happening in property nationally. With a wealth of data at her fingertips, Nerida marries the fundamental market drivers of real estate with the way we behave online to extract unparalleled insights. Now you’ve probably all heard the old joke about Why astrology was invented? So economics would seem like an accurate science! For me the quality of economic projections has been about the quality of the data, the quality of the modelling and most importantly the quality of the person interpreting the data – in this regard Nerida has no equal. Nerida doesn’t have a magic crystal ball but she has the next best thing – current buyer and seller behaviour patterns that bridges the gulf between logical and emotional driven decision-making around property. In today’s very interesting discussion, Nerida shares her insights on where property is heading around the country and which locations show good long term growth potential … so listen closely! Nerida's book recommendation: Freakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner Get Invested is the podcast dedicated to time poor professionals who want to work less and live more. Get Invested: Extreme adventurer Luke Richmond on living like there is no tomorrow

To inspire and motivate you to become the best version of you, today’s guest Luke Richmond is a living breathing example of how to live and enjoy your life to the fullest when you keep this question top of mind: what if I die in five years time? Luke is an extreme adventurer. He now calls himself a full-time author, speaker, climber and ocean rower and part-time base jumper - but he’s much more than that. After hitting rock bottom in his early twenties from drug addiction he managed to set himself straight after finding a sweaty salvation in the Muay Thai training camps of Thailand. Since those demon days he’s gone on to climb the highest mountains on six continents, brave -60 degree temperatures in Antarctica and has been held captive in the jungles of West Papua – you are going to love his pulse racing, breath taking stories. He has witnessed death before his very eyes on the highest mountain peaks and he’s healed his mind with an ocean row across the Atlantic, setting a new world record. In one of his recent expeditions he dragged a cart containing all of his food and water across 1800 km of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia becoming the first Australian male to do so. In a strange way, Luke has repeatedly found comfort in suffering while on adventures and he feels as if he has lived ten lifetimes - yet he is only just getting started. Luke lives by the motto ‘one life one chance’, which is the name of his first book - a really inspirational read - it’s a story of adrenaline and adventure in the most unforgiving places on earth so grab yourself a copy at www.olocadventures.com/shop. His next book ‘Vodka and Sandstorms’ is due for release in March 2020. So after enjoying today’s spine tingling chat with Luke, I’m going to challenge you to get invested in your future. I want you to email me on bushy@khgroup.com.au with the subject heading: ‘What will I do if I only have five years left?’ And then answer it in the email by telling me the top three things that you would do with your life if you only had five years left. For everyone who emails me we will donate a day of live saving water to families in need in Ethiopia as part of our Know How Property Finance B1G1 Business for Good, Give 1 Million Days campaign. The most inspiring answer will win a copy of my book The Freedom Formula – I’ll even see if Luke is happy to give a copy of his book ‘One Life One Chance’ to the winner – so I look forward to reading your emails on bushy@khgroup.com.au. Get Invested: Bushy Martin: Diving into the unknown (live keynote)

I want to wake you up to help you to see differently – so you can see in the same unique way that all of the 5% who achieve sustainable success see the world. Today we’re going to break with Get Invested tradition to bring you the audio of the keynote presentation I delivered at the Wake Up conference in Adelaide in 2019. This is the first time I revealed the unique way of seeing things that all successful people adopt, whether they are consciously aware of it or not – a special way of seeing that I’ve distilled from my continuous study of success over the last 35 years – a way of seeing differently that has formed the basis of our living by design way of life and our freedom formula. So if you’re feeling stuck, drowning in despair and trapped on the treadmill and you cant see a way out – if  you’re wondering how you need to see differently to start enjoying better results in any area of your life, this episode will wake you up and give you the GPS that you’ve been looking for. A challenge for you: Somewhere during this keynote recording, I mention a critical question that you need to ask yourself every single day – asking and answering this one question will keep you seeing successfully and will change your life.  And to keep you accountable to yourself, I want you to jump on Facebook, take a selfie, tag us @knowhowtomakeithappen, and post your first answer to that life changing question. Or if you’re feeling a bit shy, you can email me at bushy@khgroup.com.au with the question in the Subject Header and your answer in the email. For everyone that posts or emails me, we’ll donate a day of lifegiving water to families in need in Ethiopia who have no voice and have no choice, as part of our Give 1M Days: KNOW HOW to Save a Dollar to Save a Life campaign. I would love your feedback on this keynote! So please share it on social media and get in touch to let me know your thoughts. Get Invested: Michelle Jewels-Parsons on what death teaches us about life

Today’s guest refers to herself an end of life guide, end of life companion and a funeral celebrant. Michelle comes to the death and dying industry with a wealth of knowledge and experience. She has completed studies in both grief and loss and was a funeral director before becoming a funeral and memorial celebrant. Michelle has worked behind the scenes in palliative care as both a volunteer and communications and fundraising manager for The Mary Potter Hospice in Adelaide, with tertiary studies in Fundraising and Business Management. She now successfully owns and operates her own business and remains a strong advocate for palliative and end of life care. Michelle believes everyone should have the opportunity to have their story heard and told, and believes her role as a funeral celebrant is really being a ‘story teller of human magic’. She works closely with bereaved families helping them to orchestrate beautiful heartfelt, personalised and meaningful farewells, and is experienced and adept at customs associated with many cultures and beliefs. Being a practising Buddhist herself, she sees her involvement as karmic and an absolute privilege. Michelle is also blessed to guide those experiencing terminal illness and facing end of life, support and education, helping them acknowledge their life and prepare and accept their death. Michelle realised early on in her career as a funeral celebrant that as a community we don’t do death particularly well, and we do it even less well with our children. If that all doesn’t keep her busy enough, Michelle is the proud Mum of five young men, and a wife to her very patient, gracious and supportive husband, Richard. She believes that life’s not a dress rehearsal, and that we only get one shot at it, so she chooses to live a life that makes her leap out of bed every single day. She enjoys juggling an extremely busy yet organised chaotic life, on the basis that  ‘she’ll sleep when she’s dead’. Michelle has recently published a children’s picture book called The Present Box, which explains death, grief, loss and funerals to young children. And at the recent Wake Up conference, she has just launched her new online program that will help you to embrace the challenges of capturing your life and planning your death, called Your Emotional Will. It normally costs $199.95 but as Get Invested listeners you can get yours for only half of that at just $99.95. So if you’d like a discounted copy, just email me at bushy@khgroup.com.au with the subject header ‘Living and Dying by Design.’   Michelle's book recommendation: Chicken Soup for the Soul by Jack Canfield Get Invested is the podcast dedicated to time poor professionals who want to work less and live more.
