#25 Redefining strength in midlife and menopause with Dr. Maria Luque
We've all heard the advice about strength training in midlife and menopause, but not everyone knows why it's so important, or how to create a relationship with strength training that fits into your life. And like most things related to exercise, the conversation around strength training often gets caught up in talk about metabolism and weight, leaving many women feeling like they're doing something wrong if it's "not working". So I love the conversation that I have with Dr. Maria Luque because we talk about what strength training actually is, why it's important to maintain muscle in midlife, how much and how often we should be incorporating strength-focused movement, and how to avoid the pitfalls of "all or nothing" thinking. Dr. Maria Luque is a fitness expert, health science professor, menopause nerd, and busy mother passionate about sharing knowledge and helping women lead healthier, happier lives. She's the creator of Fitness in Menopause, a company dedicated to helping women navigate the challenges and rewards of menopause. She currently holds both graduate and post-graduate degrees in health sciences and certifications as Certified Health Education Specialist and ACE Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Nutrition Specialist. In her Fitness in Menopause Masterclass she helps women find the fun in movement during menopause and her course Menopausal Fitness: Training the Menopausal Client is a NASM, AFAA, and ACE- accredited continuing education course for fitness professionals. She teaches at the College of Health and Human Services at Trident University International and is a freelance writer for fitness publications. #24 Story Session - Why midlife is the perfect time to "start anywhere" with Crystal Garrett
This week's podcast is a bit different than most of the "story sessions" I've done before. Like me, Crystal was bitten by the midlife creativity bug and she wants to inspire you to "start anywhere" too!Crystal Garrett is a broadcaster turned podcaster and host of the Start Anywhere Podcast. She is also a communications consultant, running and motivation coach and Pilates instructor. Crystal says she has two passions: telling stories and running. She has more than two decades of experience as a renowned broadcast journalist, TV and radio host, anchor, reporter, and producer. Crystal is also former national-class middle distance runner and former member of Canada’s national team for 10 K. She has helped coach two university teams to championship titles. Crystal says she owes everything good in her life to running, which she discovered accidentally at age 12. Since then, running has been an ongoing source of joy, confidence, friendships, and travel opportunities. Running opened the door to her career in broadcasting. Crystal met her husband of 25 years on her university track team, and she still runs for fun with him several times per week. Occasionally, she runs with her three teenaged children. We had a great conversation about why Fiona's personal experience of going into medical menopause prompted her to cook with beans and lentils more often, how phytoestrogens may help some women manage the symptoms of menopause, why soy doesn't have to be feared and she shares her best tips for easy and delicious ways to enjoy them regularly. Fiona Staunton is a culinary tutor at Fiona's food for life, She is a trained chef with a degree in education and inspires people to cook from scratch and nourish themselves and those around them. #21 Story Session - How to feel less alone when perimenopause starts earlier than expected
This story session shares Cherie's story of going into perimenopause in her mid-30s, earlier than anyone was expecting. Cherie shares how she felt when her medical provider dismissed her concerns, and how she's had to expand her support circle to get the help she needed to cope with meno-rage and body changes, two common early symptoms of perimenopause.Women who enter perimenopause before 40 often feel dismissed when they bring up the possibility of hormone changes related to perimenopause, and are more likely to go years before getting treatment.Looking for help as you navigate perimenopause or menopause?
