A third (and perhaps final) chance for the sprinters at this year's criterium du dauphine, with a 3km 3% uphill drag including a 700m kicker at 6% to finish. Egan Bernal closes out his Giro d'Italia 2021 GC, crossing the line comfortably ahead of Caruso on GC wearing the maglia rosa and celebrating as he should. However things were less straightforward for the stage win in the Milan TT, with Ganna suffering a puncture and Cavagna a mechanical both within the last few kilometres. The final road stage of the Giro d'Italia, offering the perfect parcours for attackers to try and make a last difference in the general classification - long high altitude climbs, valleys between the climbs, technical descents and a 7km mountain top finish made this a beautiful stage both in design and aesthetics. Would Egan Bernal be able to defend his maglia rosa against Damiano Caruso and yesterday's stage winner Simon Yates? A 10km 9.5% mountain top finish awaited the GC riders of the Giro d'Italia 2021, and Bike Exchange as well as Quickstep were certainly up for the stage today, pacing all day, splitting the peloton at points and then launching attacks with over 7km to go in the climb. A very long transition stage meant a big break with familiar stage hunting names. A sequence of four climbs late in the stage would decide who would be the winner, either a sprinter, climber or rouleur could win if they were strong enough. An all too familiar sight at what was supposed to be the queen stage of the Giro d'Italia, absolute chaos before the race had even started. Negotiations for shortening the race (at the request of whom, we do not know) lead to the Queen stage removing two of its main climbs due to concerns over the weather. When the race did eventually start, coverage issues lead to the race defining moves (and pretty much all of the race) not being shown on live television.
