Self Portraits As Other People
Self Portraits as Other People is a hyper-creative, psycho-active variety show wherein multidimensional artist, filmmaker, voice-actor, and wordsmyth The Ungoogleable Michaelangelo engages his guests in social storytelling to mindfully and artfully investigate where the limits of language meet the fringes of Reality. Praise The Lore!
The show intrepidly treads the terrain of the trickster, constantly defying, redefining, and refining itself. Each episode is its own schizovereign entity, but there are themes that are built upon from pod to pod--themes like Consciousness and the Bicameral Mind, Divination, Folklore, Daemonic reality, Magic, Language, Psychedelics, Creativity, Dreams, Art, Poetry, Cinema, Ecology, literature, Animism, Precognition, Shamanism, and so on. Each episode is preceded by an intricately sound-scaped introduction that offers the invisible listener a lens through which to view the conversation that is to follow, along with otherwise cosmic, comedic, and contemplative content.
The shownotes offer hyperlinked rabbitholes that will allow you to dig deeper into wonderlands touched upon on air. Occasionally a solo pod is bath-bombed into the stream to showcase stand-alone story fragments that have escaped from the dark archives of never before released materials, or from the vaults of "Patreon-only".
Right from the start, SPAOP wasted no time jumping off the deep end into the highlands, linguistically levitating somewhere between the fatherland and the mothership, where laughing angels drink from the crying well and the cosmic giggle reflects its cracked smile on the surface of the shattered mirror-pool. If you're new here, and are wondering where to start, you are invited to listen in any order. Start at the last episode for the most cutting edge, newest now, and track back from there to witness the devolution, or start at the beginning and work your way up to the present, or pick a pod with a title & description that piques your curiosity. The choice is yours. We'd love to hear from you, so don't hesitate to reach out, and/or leave a review.

JF Martel - Reclaiming Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
(( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment ))
“Art is the only truly effective means we have of engaging, in a communal context, the psyche on its own terms,” writes jF Martel, the co-host of the Weird Studies podcast and the author of the brilliant book “Reclaiming Art in the Age of Artifice”, in which he distills a clear, working definition of art, in relation to its antithesis, artifice.
Treating the episode as a book report, we use the philosophy put forth in its pages as a springboard to examine the implications of ai-generated images, and the potential consequences of outsourcing one’s intuitive sensibilities to a dreaming machine.
Correction: Titanic was 1911, not whatever year I proposed

Jake Kobrin - Interfacial Magick
(( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment ))
Proficient in both digital & traditional media, Jake is one of the few formally trained visionary artists. I was his guest on ep.10 of The Quarantine Sessions, a podcast he began hosting at the onset of the pandemic. Nowadays he sporadically casts pods as solo spells, wherein he discusses his study & practice of Magick.
Alongside a curated pantheon of experts and professionals Jake also facilitates Online workshops & in-person retreats that focus on the intersection of art, mindfulness, & the western esoteric tradition.
We talk about his recent ventures into co-creating w/ Midjourney, where text-prompted spells generate AI-art. We relate the process to divinatory practices, & consider that perhaps egregorial entities are the mind’s own AI agencies.
We also touch upon his rarely discussed experience w/ hook suspension.
Though it’s not his main avenue of expression, Jake also plays music, & I included one of his piano compositions in the intro to showcase the scope of his multivalent talent.

Dave Green - A Draw-Bridge Between (The Waking State & The Lucid Dream)
(( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment ))
Dave Green’s simple line drawings come across as iconographic glyphs. These drawings are recreations, upon waking, of drawings he created in a lucid dream state.
Lately he has been experimenting with giving his pen & paper to other people in his dreams to see what they create.
His art has been featured in BBC Science Focus and DreamTime magazine. He has lectured about his work at the Tate Modern & is the subject of an upcoming documentary by the World Science Festival.
We talk about dream practices, artful means of building bridges between worlds, & creating one’s own custom, divinatory lexicon through which to smuggle objects across the borders of waking & dream.

Paradise Has Parasites (Solo Pod)
(( headphones recommended ))
Time for a solo pod! In the spirit of modular storytelling this episode offers five written/spoken/sound-scaped vignettes. All the stories are based in the Ayahuasca experience, sourced from my private stash. Not unlike an audiobook, the dark, poetic prose intends to take the audience on an immersive listening experience, enchanting them into an altered state. The main tale takes place at the intersection of parapsychology and parasitology, and revolves around my visionary encounter with a parasite who, during a 2014 sojourn in the Peruvian amazon, held my body and mind hostage.
The segments are tentatively titled as follows:
Sharing Circle
The Man In The Jungle
The Secret Cannot Be Contained
In The Beginning Was The Shhh...
Colonel Carapace: in Cherished Memory of a Perished Parasite

Kent Osborn - Sonic Space Craft
(( headphones recommended ))
Aside from facilitating plant medicine ceremonies & vending shamanic paraphernalia, Kent Osborn is also a painter & writer. He published a book of his Ayahuasca-inspired, visionary art called InKENTations, & wrote Shinan, which chronicles the different "kené"--the circuitous designs distinct to the Shipibo tribe of the Ucayali region of Peru. The patterns of the Kené are inspired by the shamans' icaros (healing songs).
This episode consists of a conversation I recorded in 2014, in San Fancisco, when Kent returned from his first Shipibo-flavored Ayahuasca ceremony in Lima. He passionately and humorously shares an experience he had with a powerful shaman, wherein he crafted objects w/ his voice & ecountered ancestral spirits. I counter his wonder-filled account w/ a tale of one of my own early Aya experiences, in which the voice also played a central role in navigating & crafting space.
Extended shownotes includes Kent's art & a piece of writing called "Icaro Casino", a case study, complimentary to ep 17, that dissects the assumptions behind our beliefs & the origins of chance, gambling, & divination.

Eric Wargo - The Preciousness of the Prescient Present
((( headphones recommended for optimal immersion and enjoyment )))
I’d describe Eric Wargo as an oneiric archeologist. He’s the author of “Time Loops: Retrocausation, Precognition, and The Unconscious” as well as a recent handbook for interpreting message from the future received in dreams called “Precognitive Dreamwork and the Long Self.” I resonate with the ideas he puts forth so much that I’ve purchased the book seven times!
We talk about the physical locale of the collective unconscious, personification and encryption in dream states, time travel, the prophetic nature of creativity, and more. I also get a chance to relay a few pertinent instances of precognition and time loops from my own life.

Gib Strange - Zeitgeist Busters
((headphones recommended for an optimal listening experience))
Gib Strange is a writer of post-ironic, meta-modern fiction. His witty work is filled w/ carefully balanced, tessellated paradoxes & insightful observations. He released parts of his novel, Notes From The Uncanny Valley, as an audiobook-disguised-as-podcast. It’s a "coming-of-information-age" kinda tale, permeated by a feeling of isolation & a sense of camaraderie w/ information itself. In it the narrator’s voice drifts dreamily on a bed of ambient sound like a ghostly tour guide highlighting the remains of the real as they fade into shades of virtuality.
For me Gib’s writings condition a particular way of thinking, feeling, & seeing--aweaving, really--that may inspire the reader to want to write as well, to cast out their perceptual nets & take note of patterns in the world around them,
in hopes of reeling in some detectable imprints of meaning.
We struggled thru some techNickle diFickleties that forced us to try out all the different recording platforms in existence. Very fitting for the kind of technallergic topics we explored. As a result the conversation is divided into 3 parts & interspliced w/ segments from Gib’s audiolized narrative. Unfortunately the first 1/2 hour of our conversation has some crippled, crackly audio bits, like gristle for the ears, but it’s not too bad, so just spit em out, ok?

((((headphones recommended for an optimal listening experience))))
Jennifer Sodini is the author of "the Amenti Oracle: Feather Heart Deck and Guidebook" and "Everyday Amenti". She's the host of the "Radio Amenti" podcast, and has recently contributed writings to Rolling Stone magazine. She's also the social media mogul who founded the platform Evolve & Ascend, which received an overhaul just before we recorded this conversation in early January 2021, in the wake of the "LARPers Take Congress" episode of American Politics. We discuss hippie-critical perspectives, meme-culture, Jewel's questionable lyrical choices, and more.

Anthony Peake - Reincantations (Life After Life Afterlife)
(((Headphones recommended for optimal enjoyment)))
Anthony Peake is the author of 11 books. Their names should clue you in to the kind of subject matter that saturates his research. His titles include Is There Life After Death: The Extraordinary Science of What Happens When We Die,The Daemon: A Guide To Your Extraordinary Secret Self, The Hidden Universe,The Out Of Body Experience, The Infinite Mindfield, Philip K. Dick: The Man Who Remembered The Future, Opening The Doors of Perception, The Labyrinth of Time, & others.
He is currently working on his 12th volume, which bears the title of the investigative theory he’s been outlining in the aforementioned labyrinth of tomes: Cheating The Ferryman: Welcome to the Youniverse.
We get the chance to dig deep & excavate the philosophical/practical applications of this theory, which proposes that death is a scientific impossibility, & that we relive & rewrite the same life over & over in a fully immersive, brain-generated, virtual-reality life review.
Each cycle is, in effect, Your Life: the Daemonic Director’s Cut.
Before we delve into the conversation I relay a detailed, soundscaped entheogenic experience, in which I experienced profound insights that exemplify many facets of what Anthony’s vision proposes.
