Dr. Cicoria grew up in Upstate New York, a rambunctious boy with a streak of independence, enjoying life as a “free range chicken”. At the behest of a coach and of his father, he enrolled in a military college. But from there he decided to pursue a career in science and medicine and a story peppered with a string of “God winks”. At 42, he was hit by lightning. His heart stopped and he left his body. He brings us through exactly what he experienced on the other side, what he saw, what he became and how that changed him forever. He was resuscitated by a stranger (a nurse!) who brought him back to life. Miraculously, Dr. Cicoria was soon able to return to work where he shared his experience with very few people and continued to practice medicine. However, the experience left him with a dogged need to compose the music that was left inside him after his experience. Rob joins us from Toronto where he currently spends his time working as a senior leader in the NHL (National Hockey League). A natural story teller, Rob brings us through his journey as an only child of a Croatian father and Jamaican mother, and growing up playing with the neighbourhood bullies and forming life-long relationships, to playing hockey at competitive levels, to the heart-breaking split of his parents, to coaching the national hockey team in Australia, and to CEOing a Pharmacare company before joining the NHL. We learn his take on not over-indexing energy in your work role vs your personal roles in the empty “race to relevance”. We hear his thoughts on playing the role of actor with the balance of projecting your authentic self. Rob brings us to present day as he reflects on how important it is to have a mindset focused on the “now” versus “what’s next” and how growth and failure need to co-exist. And most importantly, we discuss how suspending judgement opens the door to learning, exploring self-development, and enjoying the human quest for truth. We sit down with Riane Eisler, an accomplished researcher, author, professor and public speaker. Residing in Southern California, Riane briefly describes her experience as a Holocaust survivor as a little girl and her voyage to North America. In this discussion we break away from our tradition approach to conversation as we focus on Riane’s life’s work: ie. on Partnership systems. Tim grew up in rural California where he attended the only non-accredited highschool in the state. But this didn’t dissuade him from pursuing an early goal to work in the Film Industry. Taking advice from a mentor to cut his academic teeth in an unrelated field of study in college before entering film school, Tim unknowingly entered the working world of film production with another acquired skill set. Realizing that he could create his own stories for the industry, he pivoted from the production side after he pounded the pavement for an opportunity to showcase his creative writing abilities. Three decades later, and with a slew of successful TV series under his belt, Tim muses with us about the source of his muse. We discuss tapping into the river realm of creation and the exhilaration of engaging the audience into the story creation process. We also discuss his socially-focused tech entrepreneurial ventures and what they mean for him. We learn about his excitement for the impact that today’s young leaders are poised to make as they become aware that they can create impact for many – and from wherever. Tony joins us from Houston, Texas. He shares with us his upbringing in a family with musical pedigree where his parents taught him the value of using his imagination to build and to create. He was tasked to learn the violin as a young boy and he did - but he took exception to practising it. He learned soon thereafter that his curiosities instead lay with actually composing music. We follow Tony on his journey as a young man discovering his talents and passions and how he has applied them to his life’s journey as a composer, an author and a professor. We discuss the animal brain and exploration vs exploitation – and the mystery of the creative source and freewill. We learn about Tony’s take on the “search and rescue” nature of his own creative journeys and the realization of how far we can travel far beyond our immediate sensory world. Ryan joins us from rural New Brunswick, in Atlantic Canada. Coming from a line of hard-working potato farmers, a very young Ryan thought about how he could continue the family business, but doing it his own way. Bringing home the point to us that the journey is what matters, we hear about 100lb Christmas tree shearing machines, sleeping in a truck travelling across the US to bring back contracts, exploding chip bags on highways and doctoring conference floor badges to meet key buyers. Not unrelated, we learn how he started his enterprise while hearing “no” all the time, how he built a factory from scratch to help him compete with billion dollar competitors, how he Corolla’d 90,000 miles a year without a paycheck for several years and how he hired people to join him in executing a vision that he so relentlessly pursued. Now 40 years old, we clearly learn that what’s always been important is his devotion to the land he’s from and to the people who have helped him get where he finds himself journeying now. Valentino joins us from Manchester, England where he acts as a Curator and Lecturer at of one of Europe’s leading edge Schools of future storytelling: the School of Digital Arts (SODA). Originally from Rome, Valentino lost himself in his formative years after the sudden death of his father, until he started to consume what he left for him: his movie collection. Convinced as a teenager that he wanted to be a cinematographer, he slowing shifted his focus during his studies to art and art-history and its intersection with technology. After completing his PhD and feeling somewhat stuck in academia, Valentino invented and forged his own career projection. He worked his way, entrepreneurially, to become a leader in creating Fairs & Festivals in Europe to facilitate proactive dialogue between Artists/Art and Tech-focused businesses leaders at Google, Sony, etc. We discuss the growing awareness amongst business and science leaders of the importance of art practised without constraints. Valentino explains how the practice of art frees us to inspire ourselves and others – and to literally enable us to see new worlds. Literally. We discuss how our view of art is slowly shifting away from its “zooification” to the understanding that it truly is a seismograph of human culture. So. Much. Fun. Born and bred in Southern California, Troy gives us a glimpse of growing up in a musical family. His father and uncle who formed the duo the “Brothers Johnson” had profound influence on music in the 70s and 80s. Born in the 1980s, Troy also took to musical creation immediately, preferring to spend time even as a small child and pre-teen in a music studio above all. His world took a turn while he was still in his teens with his parents’ separation, the death of his best friend and his mother’s illness & eventual passing. But Troy’s undying desire to create music kept him in growth mode. Believing at his core that this is what he was always meant to do, he discusses how being the “oddball ideas” guy in the room is also one of his calling cards. Letting himself go where the fluidity of life’s winding river and where his creations take him, Troy stresses the importance of self-belief and openness to different ideas as his real superpowers. Add in real examples of mind-blowing UFO sightings and a harrowing story around Area-51 and we start to understand that Troy is not afraid to ponder the large questions to better make sense of his role in the creation process. Sue was born and bred in Buffalo, New York. She developed a desire for a career in healthcare and pursued studies in NY and North Carolina and when her life took a turn, so did she. Off to Arizona for no reason at all and very little money to her name, she started a journey with a little bit of Billy Joel and whole lot of hustle. After volunteering quite a bit of time at a clinic, her employer and her patients started to take note of her work ethic and her authentic efforts to help heal others. Fast forward a bit, she was hired as the Head Athletic Trainer for the LA Dodgers. The first woman to hold this position in any of the 4 major professional sports leagues she also credits mentors along the way to helping her learn, develop – and deal with her baby-giraffe. She set a course where today she has worked with all major professional leagues, in addition a stint with the men’s US National Soccer Team. Today, as an entrepreneur and pioneer in her field she is able to reflect with us on what is really important for her in life … including the exploration of Music-Sue.
