Episode #136: Interview with Melissa Urban (Whole30 Co-Founder) on Addiction Recovery, Healing from Sexual Abuse, Dealing with Divorce, and Why She Started Whole30

In this podcast I interview the incredible creator and founder of Whole30 and bestselling author, Melissa Urban, on her health journey, dealing with trauma, how to recover from addiction, how to help someone who is battling with depression and much more! Melissa didn’t just wake up on day and decide to found the Whole30 movement. Her journey to health was a long one: even though she grew up in a good home, she was sexually abused by a family member as a teenager. To suppress the trauma, she turned to drugs, and what started off as a distraction soon became an addiction. She tried to hold in her pain, and started self-destructing internally—trauma and pain cannot be suppressed, and will manifest in other areas of our lives if we do not embrace, acknowledge and deal with the hard stuff in life.  Podcast Time Highlights: 2:34 What inspired the Whole30 movement? 4:08, 43:00 How community lays the foundation for true success 6:00, 8:08 How Melissa overcame her drug addiction 19:08 How we are not defined by any one part of our story 20:42 How to heal from divorce 27:11 Why is mental health so important?  31:06 How to help someone who is depressed and suicidal 39:40 Is there such a thing as work-life balance? 41:31 Melissa’s spiritual journey 43:00 What is it like to run Whole30? 47:55 Melissa’s favorite foods and recipes 50:21 How to deal with negative criticism and feedback  53:42 Are there any wellness trends we should avoid? Whole30 program: whole30.com instagram, twitter, and facebook: @whole30 Whole30 books: whole30.com/books Melissa's personal instagram: @melissau   Melissa's AMAZING podcast: whole30.com/podcast  For additional resources to help you on your mental health healing journey: Get my new 21 day brain detox program here: https://theswitch.app  Register now for my 2020 Mental Health Summit Dec 3-5 in Dallas, TX! Episode #132: How to recover from disordered eating + tips on overcoming guilt, shame, and perfectionism with therapist Megan Bruneau

We have all experienced shame before: the feeling that we are not enough, or that we do not live up to certain standards or ideals. But what happens when this shame spirals out of control? What happens when it overtakes our life, and affects the way we think and behave? In this week’s podcast I speak with Megan Bruneau, a psychologist and registered counselor who specializes in crisis support, compassion-based therapy and executive coaching, about the problem of shame, learning how to love yourself despite your imperfections, how to help someone with an eating disorder, the danger of medicalizing normal human emotions and why positive affirmations often fail. Megan has been featured on national television programs like Good Morning America and The T.D. As Megan says, we are all a journey, and we are all worthy of being loved, and there is room for both joy and sorrow in life. You don’t have to wait till you feel happy or look a certain way or have a particular life or succeed at something to feel like you belong and that you matter, because you are worthy, right here, right now. Megan’s website: https://meganbruneau.comFollow Megan on social media: https://www.instagram.com/meganjbruneau/https://www.facebook.com/meganbruneaumahttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5EC_tOiVRKk3ftpqTdviuw Podcast Time Highlights:3:00 Megan’s background and her personal battle with perfectionism and shame5:30 Why positive affirmations don’t work10:18 Why the happiness industry is dangerous12:43 Why we need to deal with difficult emotions20:00 What are some of the major issues we face today?25:00 How to heal eating disorders54:45 The importance of self-compassion and purpose  For additional resources to help you on your mental health healing journey:Get my new 21 day brain detox program here: https://theswitch.app Register now for my 2020 Mental Health Summit Dec 3-5 in Dallas, TX!
