Do we NEED Bitcoin? Ep 260, Scott McLiver
Bitcoin just like many other traditional investments - isn’t risky, it’s just volatile. In a world where bitcoin hits zero, which is what it means if it’s risky, traditional share portfolios hit zero too. Think about it: it doesn’t matter how valuable an investment is, if the dollars denominating it could self-destruct. The more volatility, the higher the long-term returns. If that’s true for tech-stocks, it’s true for bitcoin. In the world exactly like what’s being served up today, everyday investors can now diversify into something not denominated in the same currency as their other investments. If holding bitcoin really was about making more traditional money one day, I wouldn’t be a fan of it. My mainstream investments are for mainstream returns. You should consider bitcoin if you believe there’s a possibility traditional stores of value may not endure for your investing timeframe.Scott McLiver is a partner within the private business team at PwC and has a strong interest in blockchain technology as well as digital assets. _______________________Hey! What are swap rates saying right now? News of the Money-World, Ep 36
If I recall an opinion I heard a few years back correctly: I know we're supposed to believe the official narrative here, but debt markets are where we go on occasions such as this for the real source of truth. Right now, there's a growing cohort starting to waiver in their belief that the Fed, and by extension, other central banks around the world, actually have this under control. In some ways, they've lost control already. In other ways, the blunt edge of their full suite of 'tools' are yet to fully bite. You can find the PDS on the [now expired] offer link found in the video version of today: https://youtu.be/Vp1-ugGM4As________________________________Welcome to a bonus series, in partnership with koura Wealth, your digital KiwiSaver provider. The Courageous Everyday Investor, Ep 258
Unless your retirement plan is receiving an inheritance, you know that if you don't make this investing thing work, there's no plan b. Sure you could take a gamble with average and hope it'll be enough, but what if the future's going to be different? What if it's harder for a season to generate a meaningful return for a while? Well, you need to be an excellent investor. While it’s easy say and hard to do, being excellent doesn’t need to be complicated: Just keep getting better at what you’re doing, then wait for the voices saying you can’t, to gradually fade away. Job done – you're officially most excellent!Good is awesome when you've come from worse. It's a bit discouraging when the goal is to be safe though. The rewards for safety are average returns. The rewards for being courageous? It's the satisfaction knowing that when you faced 'resistance', you leaned into it, and you prevailed. In a world increasingly petrified of everything, making safety the primary investment objective could be one of the dumbest things to aim at.Maybe we learn excellence with sport, business, public speaking, leadership, whatever – but can we apply the same principles of pushing through to the world of investing too?In this episode with Cole Hauptfuhrer from www.findfatfish.com, we’re going to talk about being excellent at picking individual stocks.Wait a minute! You can’t outperform the market! You’ve seen the slides and stats (at events sponsored by the passive fund managers) - it’s hard and often impossible to beat the average, especially consistently through time.So in other words don’t bother even trying – you don’t want to gamble your retirement trying to prove statistics wrong do you? Perhaps it’s true that the most efficient way to get a compounding return from the market over time is through low cost managed funds though. It’s efficient, but is it best? More importantly, is it best for you?Cole Hauptfuhrer is not a financial adviser, he doesn't handle 'client money', and he does not provide an investment recommendation. For more information, please check out www.findfatfish.comAsk me anything, suggest a topic, or a guest!_______________________Hey! TGIF, Ep 257
It's a recurrent nightmare of mine, that somehow, some time in the future, everyday investors will lose access to their pots of wealth. It's scary, but there's a risk we're taking more now, than we used to, with our wealth - custody risk. We're seeing this play out in the crypto-ecosystem now. Some would suggest this is why you stay away from crypto. Really? Be on high alert here for kettles calling pots black here. Is it not even remotely possible that what's happening in the trustless space, could also unfold in the 'trusted' trad-fi (traditional finance) community?Custody risk has been amplified more and more over time, where our assets are held on our behalf by someone else (often through technology platforms). For the most part, our trust is well justified. These are well worn rails which relying on principals we've trusted for quite some time - there's no need to panic. It's just something to consider. To suggest everyday investors can never lose from a failure in modern day custody practices though? Pure hubris. We know what happens after pride sets in, just look at crypto, it shows us our future. In crypto, as with most things, flaws in the system cause blow outs fast - they can't be papered over.Today, I'm sharing my story of how I recently lost some of my investments through a platform I thought I could trust. I made a mistake in a way, but now I wonder if the risk I didn't consider carefully enough here, exists elsewhere also. Am I paranoid, or just seeing something in advance? Here is the link referred to in this episode: https://celsius.network/_______________________Hey! Michael Reddell / RBNZ: You got this? Ep 256
If you're keen to build new wealth in the new world we're heading into, I think we should be talking more about the rules of the game?Today, I'm having a conversation with someone extremely well qualified in the area of central banking.Michael Reddell has spent over 30 years doing economic analysis and policy advice at various places including our very own Reserve Bank, where he ran a number of areas, including Head of Financial Markets, he was responsible for monetary policy implementation, foreign reserves management, and the analysis of financial system risks.I’m wondering if separation between the RBNZ and our government, is only the starting point for anyone curious about what's going on with the people behind the green curtain. What if the RBNZ is effectively just a branch of a form of unelected government that’s engaged in a type of currency war hidden in plain sight which flies straight over most of our heads?Note: The opinions expressed in today's introduction are designed to get you to think - I cannot say these are the views shared by my guest and to be honest, I'm not sure these views are all that well informed yet either.Ask me anything, suggest a topic, or a guest!_______________________Hey! TGIF, Ep 255
"Hi Darcy, loving the pod, and especially how you have a somewhat contrarian view of things. I think this might be a common issue amongst your listeners. My 19th year old university student son has about $30k saved up currently. He has a part job and lives on the smell of an oily rag.... he has KS also, roughly $8k last look. He wants to buy a house/rental asap after graduating. He is on target for double major in Chem/Physics so no dunce. We are property investors too. Have been putting about $20k on term deposit and rolling over.....very hesitant to even put it into KS due to volatility and short 2/3 time frame...Whilst realizing inflation is eroding capital.....any thoughts on this, thanks"Rachel ColemanAsk me anything, suggest a topic, or a guest!I’m really excited for this one today, because this episode is inspired by one of you recently, who took the time to ask a question by visiting the show notes and clicking on the sentence above. Property: Catching Falling Knives Anyone? Ep 253
The CCCFA and the sharp spike in interest rates were the last two nails in the coffin of a series of moves initiated by both the Government and the Reserve Bank of NZ. Although it's a baseless allegation to suggest a piece of legislation was specifically designed to bring down the property market, there are two things to point out:1 - It's far easier to crash an economy than to build it up and,2 - secondly, they did say they were going to do this.Rupert Gough from https://mortgagelab.co.nz/contact-us/ is my very special host today and really, we're just shooting the breeze and speculating around what comes next with the property market.Ask me anything, suggest a topic, or a guest!_______________________Hey! Tax-Efficient Investing - Part Two, Ep 251
Ask me anything, suggest a topic, or a guest! My guest today is Amanda Martin, a specialist tax adviser and this is part two of 'Tax-Efficient Investing'. If you'd like to read more of what she puts out there, check out ww.taxadvisory.co.nzRemember not only is this podcast 'not financial advice', this isn't tax advice either. Performance, risk, and fees:How well has an investment has performed in the past and will those conditions be present off into the future? With wild swings in prices, is the timeframe we’re investing for appropriate for our chosen wealth building tools?Who’s wetting their beak off my hard earned cash – are they adding value?Sound like some typical questions you have too when you invest? The great news about questions relating to performance risk and fees I think, is that it’s easier than ever before to get the answers. Tax though, is often not in the top three of questions we mull over though._______________________Hey!
