EP 78: Working with Withdrawers in Emotionally Focused Therapy (Part 2) - Featuring EFT Trainer Dr. Sam Jinich

In relationships we often get into negative "cycles" or patterns of interaction, where miscommunication leads to anger, defenses, and disconnection. One of the most common relational patterns is the Pursuer-Withdrawer pattern. Pursuers often initiate discussions, want to talk things out right away, and move closer toward their partner to connect, whereas Withdrawers often shut down or get silent to avoid confrontation and may even leave the room to get "space" to manage difficult emotions. At the same time, everyone may do both a little of both at different times, whether you're a pursuer or a withdrawer boils down to your primary instinctual tendency during conflict.  As EFT Emotionally Focused Therapists, it is important that we understand what's happening inside the world of both pursuers and withdrawers. Join We Heart Therapy Host Anabelle Bugatti, Ph.D., LMFT, and Certified EFT Trainer Sam Jinich, Ph.D., as they discuss how to understand the world of a withdrawer and tips and strategies within EFT for helping these clients. EP 76: Working with Spiritual & Religious Bypasses in Session Using EFT - Featuring EFT Trainer James Hawkins

The client's use of their spiritual values and religion in their therapy sessions can really be an asset to the client's mental health. However, sometimes, clients can use their religious values or spiritual beliefs as a block or an exit during sessions as a sort of bypass to avoid doing some of the deeper emotional work that's needed. Spirituality and Religion can be super helpful, and it can be very delicate to know what to do when you want to honor the client's beliefs but also recognize when it's coming up in session as a way to avoid doing deeper work. As therapists, we want to make sure that we don't dismiss a client's spiritual or religious beliefs, or that we also don't get stuck preaching to them either (be sure of your ethical best practices here!). Join We Heart Therapy host Dr. Belle and ICEEFT Certified EFT Trainer "Doc Hawk," James Hawkins Ph.D., as they discuss how to work with clients' use of spiritual/religious bypasses in session using EFT Emotionally Focused Therapy. EP 73: Working with Binge Drinking and Addictions using EFT - Featuring EFT Trainer Jim Thomas

EP 72: Working with Autism & Emotion in Couples Therapy using EFT - Featuring EFT Trainer Scott Woolley, PhD

There are many reasons why a person may have had to learn to shut down emotion, avoid doing emotion or simply was never taught how to express their emotions outwardly, all of which have nothing to do with Autism. Yet, many therapists mistake a lack of emotional expression right off the bat for Autism, which can cause a therapist to jump to a pathological conclusion without really understanding the whole picture. And while lack of appropriate emotional expression or flat affect can be a diagnostic criteria for autism, there are also many people in the world who have Autism and can name and identify emotions as well. Regardless of whether or not a person comes for couples counseling or individual psychotherapy with autism, the diagnosis does not have to equal total hopelessness for learning how to do emotions. And in either case, the work a skilled Emotionally Focused Therapist will do in session for any client with trouble feeling and expressing emotion will be the same, whether or not a person does have Autism. Join We Heart Therapy host & Cert. EFT Supervisor/Therapist Dr. Belle and special guest, EFT Trainer Scott Woolley, PhD, as they discuss Autism, emotions, and how to use Emotionally Focused Therapy to work with both dynamics. EP 70: Using Emotionally Focused Therapy to Repair Social Injuries - Featuring EFT Trainer James Hawkins PhD

Right now in society, it has never been more important to learn how to have hard conversations that are effective and lead to understanding and healing the pain of social injustices and injuries that have taken place. The good news is, is that Emotionally Focused Therapy offers us a clear roadmap for having such challenging and important conversations. Using the EFT map around healing attachment injuries can help bring people within not just our families and friends, but also within our society into the conversation that can hopefully result in healing, understanding, repairing, and connection. Remember, a person doesn't have to have bad intentions in their heart in order to unknowingly be doing something that is sending a signal of danger or disconnection to another. This is why it has never been more important to learn how to have effective conversations where two seemingly different perspectives can come together not in a spirit of blame and attack but to a place of repair; offering understanding and empathy in a place of pain, creating awareness and change around danger cues, and having important repairative conversations that build connection together. Join We Heart Therapy host Dr. Belle and ICEEFT Certified EFT Trainer "Doc Hawk", James Hawkins PhD, as they discuss how to use EFT's attachment injury repair model as a map to having challenging conversations and repair social injuries.
