029: How to Find the Right Retirement Planner For You with Jamie Hopkins
Jamie Hopkins is soon to become the Director of Retirement Research at the Carson Group - and he holds virtually every designation under the sun. He has been the Co-Director of New York Life's Center for Retirement Income, a Professor of the Retirement Income Program at the American College of Financial Services, and helped to create the Retirement Income Certified Professional designation. He was one of my professors as I was getting my education. He's been featured in Forbes, Kiplinger, and served as a Retirement Mentor for Marketwatch. He's contributed to dozens of journals on tax law and retirement income planning, and his newest book, Rewirement: Rewiring the Way You Think About Retirement, explores the difference between - and the different mindsets needed for - retirement income planning and saving for retirement. Today, Jamie joins the podcast to talk about the lessons he learned as captain of the Davidson College swim team training alongside Michael Phelps (and how they shape his work as a financial planner), what he considers to be the greatest accomplishment of his life, why almost everyone is holding some form of digital currency, and how to find a retirement planner who isn't just good - but a fit for your specific needs, situation, and challenges. 027: Finding Adventure & Purpose Later in Life with Hans Finzel and Rick Hicks
Hans Finzel hates the term retirement - and he really hates the idea that retired people don't have anything to offer the world. He and his friend Rick Hicks are both PhDs and former CEOs who left their roles as they approached the age of 60, but they now spend their time conducting studies, researching, and writing. In their new book, Launch Your Encore: Finding Adventure & Purpose Later in Life, they share real examples of individuals who have transitioned from full-time jobs to volunteer work, ministry, or even entire second careers. They want you to craft a game plan for life after your main career that will position you to succeed personally and make positive contributions to society - and never think about the idea of retirement the same way again. Today, Hans and Rick join the podcast to talk about why hanging out on the couch for 30 years isn't a viable option, the importance of passing the torch on to others, the dangers of losing touch with the outside world, and a variety of exercises you can use to envision - and realize - your second act, even as you're still in your first. You'll hear a number of stories about highly intentional, powerful encores - and how you can build a healthy, satisfying life in retirement. Get Today's Show Notes! 025: Retirement Planning for the Unwealthy and the Power (and Danger) of Data with Dirk Cotton
Dirk Cotton was a senior executive at a Fortune 500 company. However, after retiring in 2005, he's found himself busier than ever. He loves to do research, specifically retirement research, and publishes often on his blog, The Retirement Café. He's also a Thought Leader at APViewpoint, Advisor Perspectives' online community of investment advisors and financial planners, and provides retirement coaching services in exchange for pizza, craft beer, and charitable donations, among other gifts. As Dirk sees it, a lot of the best financial advice is only available to people who have lots of money - and that's why the Retirement Café focuses on retirement planning for the unwealthy - or those with less than $100,000 in savings. Dirk came highly recommended by Wade Pfau, and his work has proven highly valuable for his readers and his clients alike. Today, Dirk joins the podcast to talk about how his second act as a retirement coach and researcher began, the dangers in trying to predict the future, and the many factors that people often don't understand or think about as they prepare to retire.
