How to Get Your Lucky Break

"You've got to work hard to be ready when the lucky break happens." Last episode, Jerry Dugan joined to share about his passion for servant leadership and the lessons he's learned in his career. As we do on The Jody Maberry show, when we have a guest, that guest comes back the very next episode to ask me three questions. These questions are not prompted by me or influenced by me. He really came up with some good ones. Jerry's three questions are: What lessons from your park ranger days would you say still carry over today to being a servant leader? What is the rut you help people get out of? How would that person go about getting that first gig? He even manages to sneak in a fourth question about Bigfoot. As Jerry asked each question it led to interesting discussions about how our experiences can shape us into better leaders who prioritize serving others. Not only by leading, but also genuinely caring for those we lead. Many people that transition from public service to entrepreneurship find it challenging to promote themselves. It often goes against the very core of servant leadership. Take a listen to hear my thoughts on authentic public service with the extraordinary servant leader, Jerry Dugan. We explore how my experiences as a park ranger have shaped my leadership skills and goals. How to Get Out of Your Rut

"Our ruts are really not that deep. They're not that hard to climb out of." Jerry Dugan never expected that a simple conversation about Nutella would lead him on a journey of personal growth and self-discovery. He is a compassionate speaker and author who aims to empower men in their thirties and forties to shatter the barriers keeping them from realizing their full potential. As an avid podcast listener, he found himself drawn to the stories of others and the lessons they had to share. During a New Years resolution jog on New Year's Day he realized he wanted to inspire others as well. This led to the creation of a father-son podcast that would ultimately change his life. He realized that through his podcast, Beyond the Rut, he was inadvertently inspiring himself by showing up every week to talk about something that mattered. As the years passed, Jerry noticed that he was stuck in a rut in his personal and professional life. It was time for a change. Through introspection and the support of his family, Jerry made the decision to leave his corporate job. He spent time writing a book that captured all that he had learned to help others break free from their ruts. The podcast evolved from a men's ministry to a place where people share their stories and practical advice on how to get out of ruts in their lives. He now has a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment after recognizing the importance of seizing the moment and taking the necessary steps towards personal growth. Jerry's podcast and book, Beyond the Rut, have given him a wealth of experience in guiding others towards personal breakthroughs and growth. Make sure to connect with Jerry, especially if you are looking for meaningful inspiration as you navigate changes in your family, career, and personal well-being. Have the Courage to Say What Needs to Be Said

"Are Lee and Dan Cockerell really like that everywhere? That's right, they are." Author and speaker known as Dr. Disneyland, Jeff Barnes, returns to the Jody Mayberry Show to ask me three questions. He hit it out of the park with his questions, including my childhood inspiration to become a park ranger. We also get into some of the experiences I've had with former Disney executives, Lee Cockerel and Dan Cockerell. As a kid I can remember going on family vacations and admiring the hats and uniforms of park rangers. The more I learned about them and their dedication to protecting the parks, I became even more interested in becoming a ranger. In a similar sense, the more I got to know Dan and Lee Cockerell, my understanding and appreciation for the Cockerell legacy grew. Their lessons gave me a unique determination to excel in the new direction of my career. One of my favorite memories with Lee Cockerell came during a recent visit to Hollywood Studios. It was the first time we had gone to a park together after working together for nine years. Lee had never been to Galaxy's Edge before, and it was amazing to experience the ride together. Lee and Dan have been great examples of pursuing new opportunities, while cherishing where you've been and what you've done. For me, that includes the fond memories of the parks and park rangers that ignited my dreams in the first place. The Wisdom of Walt

"Every great story requires conflict." Jeff Barnes had an underwhelming first experience at Disneyland. So much so that it sparked his curiosity about why people loved the park so much. His insatiable curiosity led him to research Walt Disney's life and the adversity he faced. It was through this research that Jeff discovered Walt's desire to be remembered as a storyteller and the importance of overcoming adversity in achieving success. This realization drove Jeff to create a course that uses Disney's stories to inspire and motivate students to face their own challenges and achieve their dreams. Jeff's journey took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor immediately after starting the course. Rather than giving in to fear, Jeff chose to delay surgery and continue teaching the class. Throughout our conversation Jeff shares about the moments of resiliency he had learned from Walt Disney and how that ultimately shaped his success. His experience with the brain tumor gave him the courage to finally write his long-dreamed-of book about Disneyland. Now, as an author, speaker, and blogger, Jeff continues to use Disney's lessons and creativity to inspire and motivate people to embrace adversity and live their best lives. In this episode, you will be able to: Discover Jeff Barnes' intriguing transformation from professor to Disney entrepreneur Gain valuable insights on the crucial role self-belief and resiliency play in achieving success Delve into Jeff's captivating book, Wednesdays with Walt, and his exceptional presentation style Absorb inspiring lessons from Walt to spark creativity and motivation within yourself Find out how signing up for Jeff's email list and joining Phoenix Club will enrich your experience Jeff's approach of using Walt Disney's lessons and creativity to inspire and motivate people to achieve their dreams inspiring to anyone who feels stuck and hopeless. Use Influence Not Power

"If you want to get results, exert influence. If you want to feel like you're getting results when you're not, exert power." After a great conversation with Tim Dyck in our last episode, he has returned to ask me three questions. This was a fun chat with questions that led to a discussion about the importance of influence over power in leadership positions and how my experiences as a park ranger taught me a valuable lesson. Using influence, rather than power, is a more effective means of getting people to comply with rules and regulations. Although power may be necessary at times, influence tends to have a more lasting impact. Tim and I both agree that understanding the difference between the two is valuable in leadership positions where leaders have power over decisions that impact others. This episode highlights how seemingly unrelated experiences can provide valuable lessons and skills that can be applied in unexpected ways, making it essential to recognize and Tim's questions explore: the crucial role influence plays in effective leadership over mere power valuable lessons from my unique park ranger experiences and how to apply them to your journey financial security tips when transitioning to entrepreneurship the impact of storytelling in leadership and business growth the story behind the greatest sports logo ever designed and why it matters From discussing the best sports logos to the transferable skill of understanding power versus influence, this is a fun episode that navigates entrepreneurship and leadership. Be Specific About What You Do

"The secret to my success has been that I ask more and I offer more." After a recent webinar I received an email with great questions about taking a professional leap. They were interested in how I got started working with Lee Cockerell and asked if I could share advice for people looking to make a leap. While Cassie and I have out own unique perspective of what it means to take a leap, it lead to a great conversation addressing things that many people often wonder during a career change. I was able to establish a working relationship with Lee Cockerell by reaching out with a specific offer. That specific offer eventually led to the creation of various projects, including the Creating Disney Magic podcast and Cockerell Academy. The key is recognizing the importance of being specific in your offer, testing the waters before committing, and maintaining good relationships with past employers and organizations. Cassie and I both are no stranger to taking calculated risks. Don't be afraid to ask for help or advice. And when you are reaching out to help someone else, remember that you are also going to help yourself. For example, my reaching out to Lee and making and offer I was ultimately benefiting from the insights shared in the podcast. Take the time to craft tailored messages when you are reaching out to respected professionals. When you find the courage to take calculated risks and explore new horizons you will start uncovering unexpected lessons about the power of specificity and resilience.
