Episode 92: Irish Mythology Special: Fire in the Sky read by Aoife McMahon
This episode is the second in a series celebrating the audiobook release of Irish Mythology: The Children of Danu, narrated by Aoife McMahon and Aidan Kelly, available exclusively from Audible.Over three episodes I'll share the first three chapters of the book, recounting the arrival in Ireland of the Tuatha Dé Danaan. This chapter is read by Aoife McMahon. In the introduction to the book, I explain how the Irish Mythological Cycle tells of six invasions into Ireland. The first four are extremely sparse and briefly told, so I recount them in the prologue before moving on the fifth invasion, that of the Tuatha. This short chapter sets up for the first major battle between the Tuatha and the native Firbolgs, which is covered in the next chapter, The First Battle of Moytura. The book is available now from Amazon, Kobo, Apple Books and Barnes & Noble, and as an audiobook exclusively from Audible. It will soon be available as a paperback to order from independent bookshops (estimate late June 2025). Episode 90: The Red Woman
This episodes features a story taken from my book Finn & The Fianna, a retelling of the Finn MacCool stories which originated in Ireland, and which tell of the legendary band of warriors known as the Fianna. Their captain at the height of their fame was a man named Finn MacCool, and in this story, Finn leads his men on a hunt on which something magical and mysterious takes place, which isn’t unusual for these stories. Episode 89: The Fire Spirit
Today’s story comes from the Selkup people of Siberia. It’s one I recorded a few years back for my patrons and wanted to share with you this January. It's an animistic tale about respect for the spirit of fire, coming from people who live in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. Episode 88: Thomas the Rhymer with Kat Houghton
Kat Houghton is a storyteller, author, wilderness rites of passage guide, transformational coach and forest farmer. Originally from the Scottish Borders, she now lives and works in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia. For the last eleven months Kat has been a student on my Myth Singers program, which led her to start her new podcast, Celtic Medicine Stories, which I highly recommend. On this episode, Kat tells the classic Scottish story of Thomas the Rhymer, which is well overdue a telling on this podcast, and afterward we talk about the story, which Kat sees as an initiatory story which mirrors her own work with visionary rites of passage. I also offer an exercise to help you access 'True Thomas Knowing'. Learn more about Kat and the many aspects of her work here.Listen to Kat's Celtic Medicine Stories Podcast on Apple Podcasts here.Note: Kat's home region has been devastated by the Hurricane Helene. Kat is currently working hard with other volunteers in the area. If you would like to help, she suggests the following two organisations:'BeLoved Asheville has a long history of carrying for our most vulnerable people, especially those without houses. There are suddenly many more for them to assist' https://www.belovedasheville.com/rebuilding-hope-after-hurricane-helene/ 'And our farmers who have been donating all their harvest and not getting paid. This fund is to support them and the farms that were so damaged they have no more crops' https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-farmers-and-grassroots-food-system-organizing-in-wncSupport the podcast by buying an ebook for the price of a cup of coffee here.Get Daniel's free full-colour Celtic Mythology Handbook here. Thanks for being part of House of Legends.
