022: How To Support A Healthy Skin Microbiome w/ Jasmina Aganovic

In today's hyper-clean, anti-germ world, we have been raised to believe that all germs and bacteria are bad for us, while this is not actually the case. Yes, some germs and bacteria are harmful, but a much larger percentage is useful to us. And unfortunately, conventional cleaning practices have stripped the skin of its microbiome.  My guest for today's episode is Jasmina Aganovic, the President of Mother Dirt (a line of biome-friendly personal care products focused on restoring and maintaining the balance of the skin biome).   The technology is based off research from AOBiome Therapeutics, a biotech company focused on transforming human health through products that restore Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB), which current hygiene practices have stripped from the modern microbiome. Jasmina is a cosmetics and consumer goods entrepreneur who received her degree in chemical and biological engineering from MIT. Her career path combined her technical background with roles at consumer brands like LVMH, Fresh, and Living Proof. I mix it up now between different proteins and vegetables and that’s what I live on.” [4:54] “It’s a hard struggle to go through, especially with the itchiness. My hands were constantly in my hair and on my shoulders and my back. I don’t want to live like this. It’s horrible. It’s very frustrating. But you have to try different things. 020: How Your Mouth Microbiome Can Mess Up Your Skin w/ Trina Felber

I talk a lot about the strong link between the gut and the skin: Skin issues can occur because of gut dysbiosis! What might surprise you is that, like the gut, the mouth has a microbiome! My colleague and friend Trina Felber joins me today to discuss how our oral care affects gut health and, by extension, the skin. Trina is the Creator and CEO of Primal Life Organics, a premier, all-natural dental care company that focuses on oral health as the gateway to internal health. She believes that the antiseptic products we use in our mouths are doing more harm than good! After more than 25 years as a registered nurse, Trina has transitioned into an oral health expert. She created natural products to biohack your dental health for stronger, cleaner, whiter teeth and improved overall health. Her entrepreneurial skills and business-savvy mindset are an inspiration to women everywhere.   In this episode, we debunk the notion that all bacteria is bad. Trina explains why good bacteria in the mouth is vital to our health, and how we can work on restoring our mouth microbiome.  Have you tried a natural oral care product? Tell us about it in the comments!   In this episode How working as a nurse in the burn unit impacted Trina's perspective and knowledge of the skin How does the oral microbiome affect the gut? What should we be looking for in our oral and dental care? Why clay is an effective, gentle teeth cleanser   Quotes “Skin is your first line of defense. It has a lot to with your immune system, and almost every organ is impacted by your skin.” [2:40] “We've been brainwashed into believing that all germs are bad.” [4:49] “If you don't have good bacteria, the bad bacteria can hide in the pockets in your gums and enter into your bloodstream, and cause internal infection.” [9:19] "People have noticed that when they change their oral care, they do get better skin in the long run." It’s a condition that can make you feel self-conscious and frustrated. My personal experience has taught me that to understand rosacea, you need to understand its underlying causes. One of the major causes, we’re learning, is small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). My guest today, Dr. Leonard Weinstock, is an expert on this and I am so happy he joins us to help break it all down. Dr. Weinstock is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine with his own private practice. He has published numerous articles, book chapters, abstracts, and editorials on the subject of gastroenterology. His particular research focuses on SIBO and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). When inflammatory chemicals leave the gut and end up where they don’t belong, so many other problems can occur, such as rosacea. It’s crucially important for anyone with rosacea to listen to all their body’s symptoms, not just the ones on the skin. That way they can address the root cause of the problem. Have you seen a link between SIBO and rosacea? Leave a comment!   In this episode: How SIBO can cause rosacea Understanding that a problem in the gut, like SIBO, will manifest as a problem elsewhere What to consider when taking medication for GI issues and rosacea   Quotes: “It all comes down to what’s happening in the lining of the intestine, what kind of cells are being attracted.” [4:40] “It is important to consider both with and without GI symptoms that your GI tract is the trigger.” [9:55] “Gut health is important. Not only is it diet related, because if you have this increase in intestinal permeability because of bacterial overgrowth, you want healthy products that heal the gut linings.” [14:46]   Links Find Dr. Weinstock online Rosacea and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth: Prevalence and response to rifaximin Do I Have SIBO? article on Gluten Free SchoolReady to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

018: SIBO-Skin Rash Connection w/ Amy Hollenkamp

It’s sometimes difficult to connect certain conditions on the skin with something that’s lurking underneath the surface, specifically in your intestines. You’re going to see more skin manifestations in people with SIBO versus people who don’t have SIBO.” [5:15] “There’s this fine balance that you have to maneuver as a clinician to help people with SIBO. You have to be aware of each case and what root causal factors need to be addressed.” [12:24] “If your gut is out of whack, your hormones are going to be of whack.” [15:50]   Links Why You Shouldn't Use Coconut Oil On Your Skin Do I Have SIBO? 017: The Dark Side Of The Clean Skin Care Industry w/ Rachel Pachivas

The skincare industry is a complicated one. Very often, even when you are buying products that say they're for sensitive skin or dry skin or eczema, etc., the products you use are not actually serving you. In fact, they could actually be worsening your skin conditions. Especially if the company is "greenwashing" their branding and message to make it look more natural than it really is! Today I'll be talking to Rachel Pachivas, COO of Annmarie Skincare. She keeps the company growing with grace. Since 2012 she has expanded the business while keeping the culture aligned with their values. Her main roles are behind the scenes operations—product research and development, branding and style, budgeting, and HR—all while leading and growing the team, and working to increase education on organics, chemicals, and the skin care industry. Annmarie Skin Care provides organic and wild-crafted skincare to people around the world, with the goal to move harmful chemicals off of the shelves and out of the industry.  In this episode, we discuss why your skin products could be causing more triggers, inflammation, and flares.  Do you use natural skincare as part of your protocol? Let us know in the comments!   In this episode Why mainstream skin products aren't necessarily safe for your skin Why water is the main ingredient in many mainstream skincare products Some harmful chemicals to look out for on skincare product ingredient lists How Annmarie Skincare products differ from mainstream big brands Oils that are good for the skin What is greenwashing?   Quotes “I think there is a lot of greenwashing going on and there is a lot of terminology that we think is going to be safe and is going to allow us to use certain products that we see in the drugstore, but no, they're not. The majority of products that we see in drugstores are conventionally made and mass-produced.” [3:32] “Fragrance has phthalates in them, and phthalates are hormone disruptors. Phthalates also cause a whole variety of issues, like diabetes and weight gain and obesity and endocrine disruption.” [7:33] “In our products you definitely will see aloes, oils (carrier oils and seed oils and herb-infused oils) as the bulk of the formula. So you're getting a bottle full of nature, and herbs, and extracts, and things that are constantly nourishing your skin.” [10:09]   Links Follow Annmarie Skincare on Facebook! We are learning more and more about how fluoride can negatively impact your skin in ways you might not have realized. My guest, Melissa Gallico, is the author of The Hidden Cause of Acne and F is for Fluoride. And does she know how to research! Melissa is a former military intelligence officer, Fulbright scholar, and intelligence specialist at the FBI. This may not sound like the CV of an expert in fluoride, but while working all over the world, Melissa noticed that her chronic acne cleared up whenever she wasn’t exposed to fluoride. That sent her on a research mission to discover just what the link between fluoride and skin conditions is. Fluoride is in more places than most of us realize. We need to watch our exposure to these sources which can turn up in unexpected places. Melissa shares her discoveries about where fluoride is found (chicken bones, really?) and what you can do to limit your exposure to it. Have you taken steps to avoid fluoride? Tell me about it in the comments!   In this episode: The many different ways we are exposed to fluoride in our environment The various skin issues that fluoride exposure can cause What common foods contain high amounts of fluoride How to protect your pets from fluoride exposure What to look for in a fluoride-removing filter   Quotes: “I tried drinking non-fluoridated water and right away I saw such a dramatic difference.” [4:06] “The only thing predictable about how someone responds to fluoride is that the response will be unpredictable.” [7:33] “Fluoride accumulates in your bones over time.
