093: How To Stick To Your Skin Rash Elimination Diet For Special Occasions
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you’re on some variation of an elimination diet to help your skin. No matter how knowledgable you are, nothing will test your resolve like the holidays. The reason is that some people can easily become offended when you refuse to eat their food (no matter your health situation). In an effort to help you have a more enjoyable holiday (and ultimately burn fewer bridges), I want to share with you how to address diet restrictions after getting an invitation. It does take some practice, but after 10+ years of living gluten-free, I can tell you that this approach works the majority of the time. There’s certainly no guarantee that someone will understand. But if you follow my lead, you’re less likely to create bad blood and hurt feelings. AND you might even end up with allies on your side. In this episode: How to handle invitations for the holidays when you’re eating a restrictive diet Why hosts can become offended by your diet choices (even though it has nothing to do with them) Why avoid last-minute announcements about your diet (and how to share what’s going on instead) How to deal with larger events like weddings or parties at restaurants Script for talking to the host (that minimizes hurt feelings & builds goodwill) Quotes: Though you and I might totally understand that you’re doing this for the sake of your skin or gut or thyroid or whatever… other people will not. 089: Overcoming Food Fear Triggering Skin Rashes
“How do I start reintroducing foods that I’ve eliminated without triggering a flare?” It’s a great question and one that my community has asked me repeatedly to address. The problem is that by blaming diet over and over — food fear is created. And let me tell you from personal experience — food fear is very real (and awful). Because your skin is like a sponge and requires so many nutrients, increasingly restrictive elimination diets can put you on the path to nutrient deficiencies. And make you more socially withdrawn and food obsessive. Many can feel like a victim of food and like a constant failure (because you aren’t being strict enough). I’d like to offer a very different perspective on food fear. So let’s breakdown how many are ending up with food fear and some practical steps to start walking yourself out of this food restriction hole! 087: Skin Picking Triggered By Chronic Skin Rashes
If living with skin rashes weren't enough, compulsive skin picking triggered by those rashes makes everything worse. It makes your level of shame go through the roof and can have a bunch of other unintended negative impacts on your life. This condition, known more formally as Dermatillomania, is on the OCD spectrum. And it can cause extra damage to your skin that goes beyond what the rashes will cause. This is a personal topic because skin picking is something that I live with daily. I considered creating an episode on this topic for a few months, but my own personal shame (that I'm working on) kept me afraid to share.
