Sometimes Jesus made claims that were hard to understand. “I am the bread of life” in John 6:35 was one of those. What does Jesus really mean when he says people who eat this bread will never be hungry again? How does bread lead to eternal life? You probably get that God loves you. But does he like you? What does it mean to have right-standing with God? Depending on your religion or denomination, you may have been told that you owe God penance or good behavior to become better than you are. But in John 10, it's the grace of Jesus that interrupts the spiritual consequences of our sin. You are the answer to someone’s prayer. This world is full of messy people, people who have been mistreated, overlooked and called unholy. But Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10 to teach us not to cross the street or look away when we cross paths with these people. Instead, we are called to lean in and see their pain, to be the ones who can speak hope into their situation.
