Diversity Drives Innovation: Robin and Andréa McBride of McBride Sisters Wine Collection

Oceans apart, in two of the most well-respected wine growing regions of the world, two sisters grew up thinking they were only children. When a combination of persistent searching and a dose of magic reunited the two, they were fascinated to learn that not only did they resemble each other in appearance, but also that their upbringing and their interests were remarkably similar. At the time they didn’t know it, but together Robin and Andréa McBride would create the largest Black-owned, sustainably driven wine company in the U.S., McBride Sisters Wine Collection. Forging ahead in a stuffy industry dominated by older white men, Andréa and Robin have discovered that theirs is not only an epicurean journey, but ultimately one of social change as they work to redefine the field, welcoming women and people of color to the inner workings of the world of wine. Make Your Priorities Your North Star: Alicia Tillman of SAP

This episode is in partnership with SAP SuccessFactors.  Alicia Tillman always loved writing. As a child growing up on the coast of New Jersey, she spent her formative years by the ocean, surfing and making a plan for how she could parlay her passion for the written word into a successful career. You don’t often find writers on the business-driven Forbes’ “Most Influential” lists, but that’s exactly where Alicia landed – as one of the most influential chief marketing officers in the world. She had successfully turned her interest in writing into that of a contemporary storyteller, marketing for tech company SAP. Recently celebrating her 6th year at the company, Alicia has pioneered the support of women in the workplace, joining up with Rebecca’s Female Founder Collective to support the initiative Back to Best for Parents, aimed at supporting working professionals and parents who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. No Brand Does it the Same Way: Celebrity Manicurist and Founder Deborah Lippmann

Anyone interested in beauty products has come across the name Deborah Lippmann before, but few folks know the backstory. She’s made such a name for herself as a celebrity manicurist, and launched her own line of nail polish at the encouragement of such wonders as Mariah Carey, that it’s nearly impossible to think that her start in the beauty world was simply a way to make ends meet while she worked on her passion for music. A move to New York brought everything together, however, as Deborah found herself working among the likes of Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier, and working with celebrity clientele soon after. It was her knack for color customization, however, that made her a standout among clients and beauty editors. Deborah’s eye for color enabled her to create shades that couldn’t be found anywhere else. Although it hadn’t been her original goal, Deborah let her clients lead the way, and their insistence that she create her own line officially took her from manicurist to entrepreneur. Ever responsive to her customers needs, Deborah Lippmann products are now celebrated as some of the best in the business. These days, everyone from Lady Gaga to Taylor Swift is clamoring to collaborate on custom shades for the line! Thanks for listening! We love our listeners! When It Failed, I Wasn’t a Failure: Erin Flynn of Cladwell

Making sourdough, getting psyched for Zoom parties, and finally cleaning out your closet…the halcyon days of the early pandemic seem almost quaint now. If you’ve lost your luster, become a bit sluggish from staring at the same walls for 10 (!) months now, you’re not alone. Surrounding yourself with the same environment on repeat is tiring, but changing things up in your space can also do wonders for mental health. So if you didn’t sort through your closet last spring, doing so now may just give you the boost you’ve been missing. Erin Flynn, founder and CEO of the closet-clearing, capsule wardrobe kick-starting app, Cladwell, knows all too well how a closet of unworn, unloved clothes can drag you down. It can even impact decision making in other areas of life. Embracing her so-called failures as much as her successes, Erin shows us how making executive decisions in the dark doldrums of the closet can lighten your load and make room for your personal style, proving that in a consumerist culture, less is really more. Different Paths and Possibilities: Marla Beck of bluemercury

Marla Beck was always a beauty buff, keeping an eye on the latest skincare products to hit her local markets in the Bay Area growing up. It wasn’t until she had a business degree, however, that she merged her passion for the beauty world and her fascination with ecommerce in the late 90’s to develop one of the first ever beauty product websites. Unfortunately she was a little too ahead of her time, and in what now seems practically unthinkable, she pivoted to brick-and-mortar in order to avoid bankruptcy. bluemercuryis now the largest and fastest growing retailer/spa in the U.S. Marla’s love of beauty products is surpassed only by her love of people, and it’s her passion for listening to her customers and deeply investing in her staff that has kept bluemercury going through a recession, a dotcom burst and now a pandemic. The fact that her company continues to thrive shows just how valuable creativity and a can-do attitude can be. Thanks for listening! We love our listeners! The Accidental Entrepreneur: Kara Goldin of hint, inc.

Kara Goldin was never a fan of water. Preferring the sweet buzz of diet sodas, it wasn’t until several health concerns stacked up after having four children that Kara decided to do an experiment. She traded soda for water for several weeks and was astounded to see her skin clear and her weight drop. However, she still wasn’t a fan of the way water tasted. Kara had been adding fresh fruit, herbs and cucumbers to her water to make it more palatable. At the time, there weren’t many flavored waters on the market that were actually water; most products marketed as such were actually a sugary mix of artificial ingredients. It was then that inspiration struck: Kara started hint with just three flavors marketed at her local Whole Foods. After working for a huge ecommerce conglomerate, she was hesitant to even think of her venture as an actual company. 15 years later, however, record sales have proven success. hint is being received loud and clear!
