Postmortem on Election 2024 : Noam Chomsky in 2022 on Why the Democrats Suck(G&R 333)

In a premortem from 2022, that is now a postmortem after yesterday's election, we are reposting our interview with Noam Chomsky from 2022 on the rightward shift of the Democrats. A very interview for Nov. 6, 2024. --------------------------- From the 2022 episode: Republicans go to war . . . Democrats go to brunch! The past 50 years have seen a dramatic shift to the far-right in American politics. On the heels of the 1972 McGovern debacle, the Democrats all but abandoned their New Deal heritage and moved swiftly to a stronger pro-business position and embraced Neo-Liberalism. They abandoned class politics and giving priority to workers and the poor and instead have embraced ID politics and wokeness. As the Republicans stole elections and Supreme Court seats, gerrymandered congressional districts, packed the courts, and ran scorched-earth campaigns at every level, the Democrats have offered a timid resistance at best. In this fantastic interview, Noam Chomsky gives us a history and analysis of the evolution of the Democrats from the party of FDR to a party that's Republican-Lite. We discussed the Carter campaign, the Trilateral Commission, the DLC and the Clintons, Obama, Democratic hawkishness, and other factors in the Democratic retreat from progressive ideas, all while the GOP waged an open and ruthless war on workers, non-whites, women, and others. Don't miss this important interview with the world's greatest living intellectual. Professor Chomsky is an American linguist, political philosopher, social critic and political activist. He is Institute Professor Emeritus in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT and Laureate Professor of Linguistics and Haury Chair in the Program in Environment and Social Justice at the University of Arizona. At 93, he is still active; writing and giving interviews to media all over the world. He is the author of scores of books, including American Power and the New Mandarins, Towards a New Cold War, Necessary Illusions, Hegemony or Survival, Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy and Requiem for the American Dream. His most recent book is “The Withdrawal: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and the Fragility of U.S. Power,” co-authored with Vijay Prashad. -------------- Outro- "G&R Blues" by Moody Links// + The Withdrawal:Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and the Fragility of U.S. Power (https://bit.ly/3DPoAOI) + G&R: Noam Chomsky on Oliver Stone's "JFK Revisited" (https://apple.co/3FepBwT) + G&R: Noam Chomsky on the 1960s (https://bit.ly/ChomskyGandR) Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +Join our Discord community: https://discord.gg/aP3MAC6b Support the Green and Red Podcast// + Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast + Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. "Inequality is Killing Us All," w/ Dr. Stephen Bezruchka (G&R 331)

"Poverty is a carcinogen"--Dr. Stephen Bezruchka, a longtime emergency room physician and med school professor, talked with us about his essential book *Inequality is Killing Us All." Bezruchka goes into depth on the way that economic inequality determines our access to healthcare. The U.S. spends more money on healthcare than any other country, but our outcomes, and especially our life spans, are not good. Children in America get less medical attention, poor people don't have access to essential services, and we're daily pummeled by the stresses of being poor and having to pay bills, go to work, pay rent, and be prepared if a medical emergency arises. This is a vital contribution to any national debate on health care, and Bezruchka is a passionate advocate for a more humane and democratic healthcare system. Bio// Stephen Bezruchka is on the faculty ofthe School of Public Health at the University of Washington in Seattle, and author of "Inequality Kills Us All: COVID-19's Health Lessons for the World." ---------------------------------- Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by Moody Links// + Dr Bezruchka's website: https://stephenbezruchka.com/ Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ + Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/uvrdubcM) Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR Our Networks// +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ +We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork +Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/) This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. Flashpoints' Dennis Bernstein on Media in an Age of War and Resistance (G&R 330)

We had a fantastic interview w/ Dennis Bernstein, host of KPFA's "Flashpoints" and longtime journalist on the Left who's inspired and helped so many of us. Dennis talked about his start on radio, including fascinating recollections of his role in covering the U.S. war on Central America and the Contra-CIA-Cocaine scandal in the 80s. We talked about his role in Left media, and how he's been at the forefront of so many issues of importance to us--war and peace, justice, labor, immigration, and so on. Importantly we discussed the renewed "McCarthyist" attack on free speech, Dennis's thoughts on being a Jewish peace activist amid charges of anti-semitism, and we had a great conversation about his poetry and how important that's been to his own career. Bio// Dennis Bernstein (@burn_stick) is a poet, human rights reporter, host of Flashpoints (@flashpointsnews) on Pacifica Radio. In this episode, Jasmine Araujo of Southern Solidarity joins us to discuss Mutual Aid in a  Pandemic, in New Orleans.  She and her crew have set up shop and they  feed 200 people a day, give them blankets, arrange for medical care, and  help when they get harassed by cops or passers-by.  She discusses the  origins of Southern Solidarity, their daily routine, and the way  COVID-19 has affected the homeless in New Orleans.  After that, Scott  and Bob talk a little about the importance of Mutual Aid and workers  actions. (New York) Yankee Imperialism: The World Series and the economics of baseball (G&R 329)

To celebrate the World Series we got together with our frequent-collaborator and great friend Clayton Lust (@claytonlust) to discuss the business of baseball, an appropriate topic since the two most valuable and wealthy franchises, the Yankees and Dodgers, are fighting it out. We discussed the ways in which baseball is a great way to learn about capitalism--the value of franchises, the wealth of owners and players, but more importantly the state's support of wealthy MLB teams through subsidies to build stadiums, tax breaks, infrastructure and more. We also discussed the impact of all this on the fans--the price of tickets, merchandise at the ballpark, and the overall costs to the family to go to a game. We like to talk about pop culture and politics and what better way to discuss it than discuss the fall classic. ————— Intro and Outro- “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ + Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/uvrdubcM) Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR Our Networks// +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ +We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork +Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/) This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. In our latest, we dive into the story of Vietnamese immigration to the U.S. following the war through the lens of food with our long time friend and colleague Prof Roy Vũ. We discuss Vietnamese-American food gardens and cooking, how they affected the community in places like Houston and the Gulf Coast and the multiracial community developed in places like the Houston’s Allen Parkway Village. We also talk about the politics of the diaspora, the murder of Vietnamese journalist Nguyen Dam Phong by right-wing anti-communist Vietnamese groups and right wing Vietnamese support and participation in the January 6th insurrection. Bio// Roy Vũ is a history professor at Dallas College North Lake Campus and an advisory board member for Foodways Texas and Keep Irving Beautiful, where he is the 2018 recipient of the Sadie Ray Graff Education Award. Miracle in the Beanfield: Robert Redford's “Milagro Beanfield War” (G&R 327)

In our second installment in our new "Green & Red Arts and Culture Series" we talked about the book and movie *The Milagro Beanfield War." While is a heartwarming story of a regular guy taking on the system, there are significant political messages there too. The people of Milagro, New Mexico had to deal with outside "developers" coming in to their community take control of politics, the land, and even the war. The character Joe Mondragon then kicked a sluice gate to water his beans and invoked the wrath of local businessmen and politicians. Locally Joe became a hero and the development company put him in its crosshairs. The book, by John Nichols, and the movie directed by Robert Redford examine issues like land use, water rights, local organization efforts, community organizing, Latin culture, and more. --------------------------------- Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by Moody Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/knC2A4FW) Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR Our Networks// +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ +We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork +Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/) This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production.
