G&R Episode 53: State murders of Nuns in El Salvador and Fred Hampton--repression at home and abroad.

In this episode, we get into the politics of U.S. repression of dissent to its politics foreign and domestically. Bob and Scott talk about the anniversary of the Maryknoll sisters' murder in El Salvador in 1980, and the assassination of Chicago Black Panthers Fred Hampton and Mark Clark in 1969.   We discuss these horrific state-sponsored murders, and show how the U.S. military-imperial state operates when it believes its interests are challenged--be it by nuns in Central America or Black activists in Chicago. And it will remind you that Trump is not uniquely evil.  Reagan defended and covered for the terror squads in El Salvador.Read more// For further reading, see Raymond Bonner, Weakness and Deceit; Walter LaFeber, Inevitable Revolutions; Noam Chomsky, Turning the Tide.Follow us on any of these social media channels//  Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/GreenRedPodcast Twitter:  https://twitter.com/PodcastGreenRed Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/greenredpodcast  YouTube: https://bit.ly/GreenAndRedOnYouTube Donate to Green and Red Podcast//  Become a recurring donor at  https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast production. G&R Episode 52: Politics and the Coronavirus. Thanksgiving Edition w/ Prof. Sarah Koster

We're rejoined by our friend and comrade Prof. Sarah Koster of Samuel Merritt University to discuss the latest surge of COVID-19 cases.  The U.S. is being hit hard by the latest surge of COVID cases. Last week, the country surpassed 250,000 deaths with over 2,000 deaths daily.  The state of North Dakota has the worst COVID infection rate on the planet. NYC is closing it's schools once again. California is putting an "emergency brake" on it's re-opening. El Paso County, TX is having another massive outbreak and has brought in ten mobile morgues to hold bodies and is paying prisoners $2 a day to move bodies. Meanwhile, Trump plays golf and the federal government does very little in the way of relief from the pandemic or the economic crisis it's causing.  We discuss the politics of the pandemic, the vaccines being flouted by pharmaceuticals Pfizer and Moderna and the failures of the U.S. healthcare system. We also discuss the need to avoid large  gatherings and alternative ways to enjoy Thanksgiving.  And much more.  Plus we throw in our usual witty banter.  Sarah is a Family Nurse Practitioner and also has Masters in Public  Health from the University of Washington in Seattle. Sarah worked in  research and program evaluation for about 7 years with the Infectious  Disease Division at the University of New Mexico Medical School and  completed a fellowship in Infectious Disease Epidemiology with the  University of Alabama at Birmingham while living in Southern Africa.  She teaches Community Health at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA  and is committed to involving students in conversations about the  importance of structural determinants of health including how capitalism  and various existing political systems, in the US and globally,  continue to negatively affect health outcomes. G&R Episode 51: Ruling Class 101 and the Coup That Wasn't

We're not ones to subscribe to popular world views, even those held on  the left. So, in our latest episode, Green and Red dive deep into the  history and politics of the American Ruling Class, coups at other points  in history,  and the great coup of 2020 (that wasn't).     We start off with a conversation about what is a coup and not a coup. We  talk about coups in places like Indonesia in 1965, Chile in 1973, and  in other points of history; and how the end of the Trump regime has yet to constitute what is considered "coup."      Part of the reason, besides Trump's own ineptitude,  is that America's  elites (Wall St. Big Tech, the Chamber of Commerce, the Military Elites,  etc.) are done with him and recognize that he has created an era of  economic and social turmoil not seen since 1968.      As historical background, we discuss the work of noted scholars Thomas  Ferguson and Nomi Prins on the politics of Wall Street and America's  Ruling Class. We look at the reaction of JPMorgan Chase CEO Jaime Dimon  and other bankers, and the military elites to the results of the  election.     We also pay tribute to women leaders in the environmental movements,  Karen Silkwood and Judy Bari, who bridged the false divide of labor and  environmentalism as organizers.     Read more//  Bob Buzzanco: Is Your Outrage Pure? G&R Episode 49: The Lessons of Aaron Sorkin's "Trial of the Chicago 7"

Happy Election Day!  Worried about the election? We are too. Hopefully, this episode will serve as a good distraction while we await the results from today's vote.  In this episode, we give a film review of Aaron Sorkin's "The Trial of the Chicago 7." Loosely based on the trial of the Chicago 7 and chairman of the Black Panther Party Bobby Seale, the film is a lightly fictionalized courtroom drama based on the six-month trial of eight men accused of conspiring to cross state lines and incite riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Bob and Scott talk about the history of the trial and the Chicago 1968 protests, what we liked about the film, what Sorkin left out, got wrong and grossly distorted, COINTELPRO, the anti-war movements of the 1960s, and, most importantly, the present day themes around politics, police violence, law and order, resistance and how 2020 reminds us of 1968.  Read More: Bob Buzzanco:Vietnam and the Transformation of American Life(https://bit.ly/2HW5VFY) Jacobin: Aaron Sorkin Turned the Chicago 7’s Militancy and Defiance Into Bland Liberalism.
