G&R Episode 59: Hope Among the Ruins of 2020

!!We're at the end of the year!! And like all small groups we  rely on donations from people like you. It's a good time to donate. So   please, DONATE and support scrappy media at: https://greenandredpodcast.org/donate-to-green-and-red/  Happy New Year, Tender Comrades! In our last episode of 2020, we talk about the past year. We discuss what we've learned, the worsening precarity, the absence of community and a rewarding life, the barriers posed by the Professional Left (NGO Industrial Complex, labor leadership, etc), the often-unhinged, conspiratorial left, but also the inspiring moral courage and bold action we saw in the streets, the role of organizers and activists, and what we can do moving forward. We read quotes from Marx and Barry Lopez and close with a woman singing the Italian labor song "Bandiera Rossa,"  from her balcony in Brussels.  Here's to fighting for a better world in 2021!  See you in the streets! G&R Episode 58: The Myths of JFK

!!We're approaching the end of the year!! And like all small groups we rely  on donations from people like you. It's a good time to donate. So  please, DONATE and support scrappy media at: https://greenandredpodcast.org/donate-to-green-and-red/  In this episode, we go myth busting. Our target is "Camelot" itself. It's the 60th anniversary of the election of John F. Kennedy and since his untimely death in 1963, he has been elevated to liberal sainthood by all parts of the establishment. We discuss JFK's legacy, and debunk the many enduring lies that people--from Oliver Stone to QAnon to today's liberal scholars and media-- still believe about John Kennedy's saintly acts, whose politics have lived on in Clinton, Obama, and now Joe Biden.  We get into John and Robert Kennedy's relationship with the red-baiting Joe McCarthy; and JFK's role as a  civil rights "hero" (while simultaneously wire-tapping Martin Luther King).  We also pierce the myth, perpetuated by Oliver Stone's film "JFK",  that Kennedy wanted to withdraw troops from Vietnam and end the Cold  War.  December 20th is also the 29th anniversary of the release of Oliver Stone's film and we take particular aim at its falsehoods.  Thanks to Mexican Educator (@publius13) for the episode idea.  Read more//  Robert Buzzanco- Masters of War: Military Dissent and Politics in the Vietnam War (http://bit.ly/2J7G3bh)  Robert Buzzanco- Vietnam and the Transformation of American Life (http://bit.ly/2HW5VFY)  CBS News: JFK and Walter Cronkite Interview  (https://bit.ly/34MMKHt)  The Kennedys and Joe McCarthy (https://bit.ly/38ngPy3)  The Atlantic: The FBI and Martin Luther King (http://bit.ly/2Wvc7sH)   Also, follow us on any of these social media channels//    Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/GreenRedPodcast  Twitter:  https://twitter.com/PodcastGreenRed    Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/greenredpodcast  YouTube: https://bit.ly/GreenAndRedOnYouTube    Donate to Green and Red Podcast//   Become a recurring donor at  https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast    Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR    This is a Green and Red Podcast production. Coming Soon: 60 years later, The Myth of John F. Kennedy

In our next episode, we go mythbusting.   It's the 60th anniversary of the election of JFK and so our target is, "Camelot" itself. Kennedy is seen as a civil rights hero and a dove by many. But did he take bold leadership to end the Jim Crow Era? Was he killed by the military-industrial complex because he was going to withdraw from Vietnam and end the Cold War? The answer is NO. Listen in and find out why.  On the next Green & Red Podcast, Bob and Scott discuss the legacy, and the many enduring lies people--from Oliver Stone to QAnon to today's liberal scholars and media-- still believe, and the myths about John Kennedy's saintly acts, whose politics have lived on in Clinton, Obama, and now Biden. We'll post this next episode soon.

G&R Episode 56: Alternative Radio's David Barsamian on the New Media Landscape, ReTargeting Iran and Noam Chomsky

Before the internet was a thing, before social media ruled our lives and before there were a million podcasts talking about about left politics, David Barsamian brought the voices of radical thinkers like Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn and Arundhati Roy into our lives through Alternative Radio.  In this episode, we're over-the-moon excited to talk to Alternative Radio's (@AltRadio) founder David Barsamian (@BarsamianDavid) about his new book ReTargeting Iran, building Alternative Radio over the past 30+ years and working with Noam Chomsky. We discuss the importance of independent media and he tells us that Green and Red is "welcome intervention into the media landscape." We also talk about the politics around Iran, the middle east and his new book. And since it is the week of Noam Chomsky's 92nd birthday, we ask David to share some of his favorite recollections of the world's top public intellectual.  David Barsamian is one of America’s most tireless and wide-ranging investigative journalists. David has altered the independent media landscape, both with his weekly radio show Alternative Radio—now in its 33rd year—and his books with Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad, Howard Zinn, Tariq Ali, Richard Wolff, Arundhati Roy and Edward Said. David Barsamian is the winner of the Media Education Award, the ACLU’s Upton Sinclair Award for independent journalism, and the Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. His latest book is ReTargeting Iran. The book in a Q&A format about the continued demonization of Iran by the U.S., Barsamian enlists the expertise of five longtime observers: Noam Chomsky, Azadeh Moaveni, Trita Parsi, Ervand Abrahamian, and Nader Hashemi. G&R Episode 53: State murders of Nuns in El Salvador and Fred Hampton--repression at home and abroad.

In this episode, we get into the politics of U.S. repression of dissent to its politics foreign and domestically. Bob and Scott talk about the anniversary of the Maryknoll sisters' murder in El Salvador in 1980, and the assassination of Chicago Black Panthers Fred Hampton and Mark Clark in 1969.   We discuss these horrific state-sponsored murders, and show how the U.S. military-imperial state operates when it believes its interests are challenged--be it by nuns in Central America or Black activists in Chicago. And it will remind you that Trump is not uniquely evil.  Reagan defended and covered for the terror squads in El Salvador.Read more// For further reading, see Raymond Bonner, Weakness and Deceit; Walter LaFeber, Inevitable Revolutions; Noam Chomsky, Turning the Tide.Follow us on any of these social media channels//  Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/GreenRedPodcast Twitter:  https://twitter.com/PodcastGreenRed Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/greenredpodcast  YouTube: https://bit.ly/GreenAndRedOnYouTube Donate to Green and Red Podcast//  Become a recurring donor at  https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast production. G&R Episode 52: Politics and the Coronavirus. Thanksgiving Edition w/ Prof. Sarah Koster

We're rejoined by our friend and comrade Prof. Sarah Koster of Samuel Merritt University to discuss the latest surge of COVID-19 cases.  The U.S. is being hit hard by the latest surge of COVID cases. Last week, the country surpassed 250,000 deaths with over 2,000 deaths daily.  The state of North Dakota has the worst COVID infection rate on the planet. NYC is closing it's schools once again. California is putting an "emergency brake" on it's re-opening. El Paso County, TX is having another massive outbreak and has brought in ten mobile morgues to hold bodies and is paying prisoners $2 a day to move bodies. Meanwhile, Trump plays golf and the federal government does very little in the way of relief from the pandemic or the economic crisis it's causing.  We discuss the politics of the pandemic, the vaccines being flouted by pharmaceuticals Pfizer and Moderna and the failures of the U.S. healthcare system. We also discuss the need to avoid large  gatherings and alternative ways to enjoy Thanksgiving.  And much more.  Plus we throw in our usual witty banter.  Sarah is a Family Nurse Practitioner and also has Masters in Public  Health from the University of Washington in Seattle. Sarah worked in  research and program evaluation for about 7 years with the Infectious  Disease Division at the University of New Mexico Medical School and  completed a fellowship in Infectious Disease Epidemiology with the  University of Alabama at Birmingham while living in Southern Africa.  She teaches Community Health at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA  and is committed to involving students in conversations about the  importance of structural determinants of health including how capitalism  and various existing political systems, in the US and globally,  continue to negatively affect health outcomes. G&R Episode 51: Ruling Class 101 and the Coup That Wasn't

We're not ones to subscribe to popular world views, even those held on  the left. So, in our latest episode, Green and Red dive deep into the  history and politics of the American Ruling Class, coups at other points  in history,  and the great coup of 2020 (that wasn't).     We start off with a conversation about what is a coup and not a coup. We  talk about coups in places like Indonesia in 1965, Chile in 1973, and  in other points of history; and how the end of the Trump regime has yet to constitute what is considered "coup."      Part of the reason, besides Trump's own ineptitude,  is that America's  elites (Wall St. Big Tech, the Chamber of Commerce, the Military Elites,  etc.) are done with him and recognize that he has created an era of  economic and social turmoil not seen since 1968.      As historical background, we discuss the work of noted scholars Thomas  Ferguson and Nomi Prins on the politics of Wall Street and America's  Ruling Class. We look at the reaction of JPMorgan Chase CEO Jaime Dimon  and other bankers, and the military elites to the results of the  election.     We also pay tribute to women leaders in the environmental movements,  Karen Silkwood and Judy Bari, who bridged the false divide of labor and  environmentalism as organizers.     Read more//  Bob Buzzanco: Is Your Outrage Pure?
