Green & Red Goes Hollywood!   At Green and Red, we're big fans of popular culture and how it can  politicize and radicalize people.  We've already done shows on sports  and activism, progressive Country music, cancel culture, Socialism and  the Sopranos and other such themes. In this episode, Bob had a conversation with Executive Director Sera Koulabdara (@SeraKoulabdara) of "Legacies of War" about the 50+ year crisis of unexploded ordnance (UXOs) in Laos.  Scott was away on assignment. At the same time as it was attacking Vietnam, the U.S. conducted a "secret war" against Laos through the air, dropping 2 million tons of bombs as part of its "sideshow" to the main war against the Vietnamese Revolution.   Included in that massive campaign were 270,000,000 cluster bombs, smaller bombs--about baseball-sized--or "bomblets" that often did not detonate.  So today, decades after the war ended, about 80,000,000 bombs remain in Laos.   Sera and Bob talked about the ferocious U.S. war in Laos, the aftermath, the daily risks faced by Laotians every day because of the millions of unexploded bombs, and the work of Legacies of War. The mission of Legacies of War is to raise awareness about the history of the Vietnam War-era bombing in Laos and advocate for the clearance of unexploded bombs, to provide space for healing the wounds of war, and to create greater hope for a future of peace. The organization uses art, culture, education, community  organizing and dialogue to bring people together and create healing and  transformation out of the wreckage of war. In this episode, we celebrate All Hallows Eve by talking about something the really scares us... cancel culture on campus!  (We're joined by the scariest guest host ever, who uses the most amazing words you can imagine.)   We talk about how the capitalist political economy turns students into consumers, universities into corporations & crushes dissent with cancel culture, revoking tenure, grad student union-busting & more.   Our conversation starts with Dr. Cornel West's op-ed in the Washington Post raising an alarm about the disbanding of the classics program at Howard University.    We then talk about three recent incidents of cancellation at the University of Michigan, within the University of Georgia system and the University of Florida. The first by left cancel culture, the other two by right wing attempts to stifle dissent.   This leads us until a deconstruction of how the liberal state works to turn students into consumers and turn university into a factory for the capitalist political economy.    We wrap up with a "Love'em They're Liberals" segment on the late Secretary of State Collin Powell. Powell's storied career extended from covering up the My Lai massacre in 1968 to serving as Deputy National Security Advisory during Reagan's contra wars to his deceitful performance in front of the United Nations hustling for George W. In Cochabamba Bolivia in 2011, tens of thousands were present on Mother  Earth Day as the Universal Declaration on the Rights of Mother Earth was  declared in response to the "privatization" of nature by the corporate  state. This was in alignment with Indigenous worldviews that have  accelerated the development of rights of nature law.  Both Ecuador and Bolivia, as well as numerous local jurisdictions, have amended their  constitutions to include a "rights of nature."    In this episode, we talk with Pennie Opal Plant (@PennieOpal) and  Shannon Biggs (@ShannonKBiggs), co-founders of Movement Rights  (@movementrights), about the growing movement around the rights of  nature. We discuss the legal, political and cultural aspects of the growing rights of nature movement. We also discuss the recent news that oil has begun to flow through  Enbridge's Line 3 pipeline after 8 years of resistance, the Indigenous  rights movement and the climate movements in the U.S. and globally. Pennie Opal Plant is an Indigenous grandmother of Yaqui, Mexican,  undocumented Choctaw and Cherokee and European descent. Born in the  shadow of the Chevron Refinery in Richmond, CA, she has been a protector  and defender of the sacred system of life for over 35 years. She is  co-founder of Movement Rights now sits on the Board as lead advisor. She  is a signatory on the Indigenous Women of the Americas Defending Mother  Earth Treaty, along with Casey Camp-Horinek. Pennie is also the  co-founder of Idle No More SF Bay and continues as an advisor. The Pacific Northwest has a long history of organizing and direct action around logging and timber industries. From the Wobblies trying to organize the logging sector in the early twentieth century to Earth First!'s campaigns to stop old growth logging to the new generation of forest defenders linking the struggle for wild places and communities to the climate crisis, direct action has always tried to get the goods.  For 25 years, since the epic timber wars of the 1990s in places like Warner Creek, Oregon, Cascadia Forest Defense (CFD) has been at the forefront of challenging the logging industry, complicit politicians, federal agencies and, in general, capitalism. In the past month, CFD has put up new tree-sit blockades to disrupt logging operations in the Willamette National Forest.  We talked with Daniel, an organizer with CFD, about past and present forest defense campaigns, Oregon's politics around forests, logging and wildfires; right-wing militias in the Northwest, the links to the climate crisis and the resurgence of forest defense campaigns up and down the Pacific Northwest.  Daniel is an organizer with Cascadia Forest Defense. CFD is a grassroots environmental organization committed to stopping the destruction of the Earth, particularly in the region known as Cascadia. Green and Red had a great conversation with the well-known scholar (and  Retired Colonel) Andrew Bacevich, whose new book is *After the  Apocalypse.*  We began by getting his views on the recent revelations regarding JCS Chair Mark Milley's role in opposing Trump's attempt to steal the election.     Then we discussed the key points in his book--his view on the dangers of  American Exceptionalism, the damages done to society by immense  military spending and the role of the Military-Industrial Complex, and the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and revived Cold War against China.  But most of our discussion centered on his book where he doesn't just discuss American interventions and wars, but the various crises that  affect National Security, and in this conversation he groups COVID and  American racial discrimination--as we saw in the 2020 protests--as  dangers to American safety and stability.   Few Americans understand these issues better than Andrew Bacevich and this was a great and comprehensive discussion.    Links//  Andrew Bacevich: After the Apocalypse (https://bit.ly/39oI1O2)  WaPo: The age of American privilege is over (https://wapo.st/2ZeYliu)  Andrew Bacevich: Gen. Indigenous women led movements have continued to disrupt the  construction of Canadian oil giant Enbridge Energy's Line 3 pipeline with over a thousand arrested. Police have escalated in a multitude of ways (felony charges, high bails, rubber bullets, tear gas, etc) against water protecting pipeline opponents.     We know through the bold investigative journalism of The Intercept that Enbridge has created a fund through the Minnesota Public Utilities  Commission to finance local and state police for pipeline security. The company and state collusion has essentially privatized the police for a  Canadian oil company. The journalism has been so embarrassing for Enbridge and the state of Minnesota that they've been begun to erect  barriers to release of public information.      We talk with investigative reporter Will Parrish and researcher Charlotte Grubb about this.     Will Parrish (@willparrishca)  is an investigative reporter whose work  is rooted in tradition of muckraking journalism.  His reporting appears  in The Intercept, The Guardian, The Nation, East Bay Express,  Counterpunch, Shadowproof, and other online and print venues.  Charlotte Grubb (@CharlotteGrubb) is a freelance researcher, writer and climate justice organizer.
