The End of Roe vs. Wade: Texas, Abortion and Mutual Aid ft. reporter Candice Bernd w/ Truthout (G&R 162)

Texas' right wing establishment has waged war on abortion and abortion  providers for many years. In 2013, Texas HB 2 closed 23 abortion clinics  and led to an 11 hour filibuster by State Senator Wendy Davis and mass  occupation of the state capital by pro-choice protestors. Earlier this  year, the passage of SB 8 put bounties on anyone associated with  providing an abortion. Texas abortion providers have already been  preparing for escalated legal action and criminalization of the  practice. Now with the likely overturning of Roe vs. Wade, that is  becoming more real.    Bob and Scott host Candice Bernd (@candicebernd), Senior Editor and  Reporter at Truthout, about her new article "Texas Abortion Funds Work  to Reduce Looming Harms of Post-“Roe” Criminalization."    We discuss the recent history of Texas' war against abortion. What  providers are doing to support those needing it. How local pro-choice  politicians are dealing with state and federal repression. And the  inevitable right wing backlash.    Candice Bernd is senior editor/staff reporter at Truthout. Her work has  also appeared in several other publications, including The Nation, In  These Times, the Texas Observer, Salon, Rewire News Group, Sludge, YES!  Magazine and Earth Island Journal. Her work has received awards from the  San Francisco Press Club, the Fort Worth chapter of Society of  Professional Journalists, the Native American Journalists Association,  and the Dallas Peace and Justice Center.   --------------------------------------------------------------  Outro// "White Crosses" by Outdoor Velour   Links//  Candice Bernd:Texas Abortion Funds Work to Reduce Looming Harms of  Post-“Roe” Criminalization (https://bit.ly/3yYYeYj)  National Abortion Funds: https://abortionfunds.org/   Follow Green and Red//  https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast ** out our new website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/  Join our Discord Party: https://discord.gg/dF99bJNb   Donate to Green and Red Podcast//  Become a recurring donor at  https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast  Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR   This is a Green and Red Podcast  (@PodcastGreenRed) production. The End of Roe vs. Wade: Reproductive Rights and Direct Action ft. Hope w/ Shutdown DC (G&R 161)

Last week, a draft of a brief overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked to Politico causing an uproar in many sectors. This decision will put the health and safety of millions of women in jeopardy. Predictably, the establishment focused on catching the leaker. Outrage hit Twitter.  And the left hit the streets. In a series of episodes, Green and Red will focus on how grassroots direct action and mutual aid groups are organizing in the wake of this political tidal wave. Before Roe, we saw underground movements to support women seeking abortions. After the 1973 ruling on Roe, we saw grassroots activists doing clinic defense in the face of violent right wing protests that included assassination of abortion providers and clinic bombings. Now as we’re looking at a time where Roe could be overturned, we’re going to be talking over the next couple of episodes about what's next for direct action and mutual aid at the end of Roe vs Wade.   This past week, demonstrations at the homes of Supreme Court justices led to ruling class and liberal denouncements of protests. The Senate immediately passed a resolution to give extra security to justices (there is no gridlock in protecting the ruling class).  In our latest episode, Scott talks with Hope with Shutdown DC (@ShutDown_DC).  Shutdown DC has been organizing actions at the Supreme Court, at the homes of Supreme Court justices and supporting the neighbors of these justices who have led regular actions at the homes for a long time. They also discussed the impact of the overturning of Roe, the future of direct action once it's happened and what's next in the coming weeks and months on this issue.   Hope is a public health student in Washington, DC. Her areas of study include pregnancy, parenting and family planning as well as understanding and combating health misinformation and disinformation. She is originally from Southern Ohio and has been involved in defending abortion access since 2015. Hope loves skill building, training and storytelling and supports movements for climate justice, racial justice, healthcare access and of course, abortion rights as a communications team member, art builder and street medic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Outro// "End of My Bloodline (Remix) by the Screaming Females with Moor Mother and Sammus Links// National Abortion Funds: https://abortionfunds.org/ DC Abortion Fund: https://abortionfunds.org/ Shutdown DC: https://www.shutdowndc.org/ The Nation: F*&k Civility! Ukraine and the Fog of War ft. Jodie Evans w/ Code Pink (G&R 160)

The Green and Red Seminar on the war in Ukraine continues! As the head of NATO says that the allies are prepared to support the Ukraine war effort for years to come, and Biden asks Congress for another $33 billion in war aid, we take a look at the anti-war movement over the past decades.  From Bush's invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, to Obama's drone wars to military build-ups in Asia and eastern Europe, the U.S. public has been lost in a fog of never ending war with critical voices for peace being the only light.  In our latest episode, we talk with long time peace activist and co-founder of the anti-war group Code Pink (@codepink), Jodie Evans (@MsJodieEvans). We discuss the recent history of anti-war movements and the state of them today. Campaigns against war mongering politicians and arms manufacturers waged by Code Pink. The connection between the military industrial complex and the climate crisis, and the recent silencing of anti-war voices like Chris Hedges, Abby Martin and Lee Camp.  Jodie Evans is the co-founder of CODEPINK and the after-school writing program 826LA, and serves on the CODEPINK Board of Directors. Jodie is the co-editor of two books, "Twilight of Empire: Responses to Occupation" and "Stop the Next War Now: Effective Responses to Violence and Terrorism" and a contributor to “Beautiful Trouble: A Toolbox for Revolution.” She is currently writing a book about divesting from the unjust, extractive war economy and building a just, sustainable peace economy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Outro// "Anti-war Dub" by Mala Links// Code Pink: https://www.codepink.org/ Code Pink’s Panel on Media Censorship of Voices for Peace Featuring Abby Martin, Lee Camp and Chris Hedges (https://bit.ly/3ybnGZV) Follow Green and Red// https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast Check out our new website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ Join our Discord Party: https://discord.gg/dF99bJNb Donate to Green and Red Podcast// Become a recurring donor at  https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast  (@PodcastGreenRed) production. The Importance of Karl Marx w/ Prof. David McNally (G&R 159)

David McNally is one of the more important Marxist scholars in the world, and we talked to him today on the anniversary of Karl Marx's birth--May 5th, 1818.  McNally discussed a wide array of topics, including his introduction to Marxist thought, important texts to use to discover Marx's writings, the importance of Marx's concept of "alienated labor," his formulation of class struggle, and why democracy is essential to socialism.   We also discussed the history of Marx's influence in European politics and how Americans came to discover Marx in the late 19th Century. And we finished with a discussion of why Marx remains relevant today and why Marxism is seeing a resurgence. David McNally is the Cullen Distinguished Professor of History and Business at the University of Houston.  He specializes in the history and political economy of  capitalism. The author of seven books and over 60 scholarly articles,  Professor McNally taught political economy at York University in Toronto  before joining the Department of History at the University of Houston.  He holds his Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. from York University. His research has addressed issues of race, migration, gender and social reproduction  in the development of global capitalism. Professor McNally has won the Paul Sweezy Award for his book, Global Slump: The Economics and Politics of Crisis and Resistance, and the Deutscher Memorial Award for Monsters of the Market: Zombies, Vampires and Global Capitalism. Professor McNally's latest book, Blood and Money: War, Slavery, Finance, and Empire (2020)  is now being translated into German.  He is also the founder of the Project on Race  and Capitalism at UH and working closely with George Floyd's family on  various community projects. ------------------------- Outro// "Karl Marx and History" by Randy the Band Links// David McNally: https://www.davidmcnally.org/ Follow Green and Red// https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast Check out our new website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ Join our Discord Party: https://discord.gg/dF99bJNb Donate to Green and Red Podcast// Become a recurring donor at  https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast   (@PodcastGreenRed) production. How Union Organizing Fights the Boss w/ union organizer Daisy Pitkin (G&R 157)

We're in the midst of a new era of momentum and militancy around labor organizing. We're seeing headline grabbing organizing campaigns at Starbucks and Amazon shifting the political landscape. But beyond Starbucks and Amazon, union organizing has been spreading to sectors across the country.      In our latest episode, we talk with labor organizer and writer Daisy Pitkin (@daisypitkin) about her new book "On the Line: A Story of Class, Solidarity, and Two Women's Epic Fight to Build a Union." We talk about her work organizing a series of factory laundromats in Phoenix, AZ in the early 2000s. Pitkin worked with immigrant women working in the terrible conditions to organize a union. Most notably, she worked with a woman named Alma, who Pitkin describes as "the gutsiest worker leader I've ever met."   This was all done despite a vicious corporate backlash in the reddest of red states.    Currently, Pitkin is organizing Starbucks workers in the Rust Belt. We discuss the Starbucks campaign and the future of labor organizing.    Daisy Pitkin has spent more than twenty years as a community and union  organizer, working first in support of garment workers around the world,  and then for U.S. labor unions organizing industrial laundry workers.  She is the author of On the Line: A Story of Class, Solidarity, and Two  Women’s Epic Fight to Build a Union, out now via Algonquin Books.   -------------------------------------------------------  Outro song- "Put it in the ground" by Marion Wade   Links//  On the Line: A Story of Class, Solidarity, and Two Women's Epic Fight  to Build a Union (https://bit.ly/3MuMTT9)  The Gospel of Organizing (https://bit.ly/3rSKGJe)   Follow Green and Red//  https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast   Check out our new website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/   Join our Discord Party: https://discord.gg/Cfq8P4Hf   Donate to Green and Red Podcast//  Become a recurring donor at  https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast  Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR   This is a Green and Red Podcast  (@PodcastGreenRed) production. Earth Day Special! The Fossil Fuel Resistance is Fertile! (G&R 156)

The first Earth Day was in 1970 after decades of conservation and environmental advocacy from Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" to real life monkey wrenchers in the deserts of the American West. Since then, like so many other things, it has become by co-opted by corporations, politicians and non-profits looking to do well with environmentally minded consumers, voters and donors. In reality, change always comes from below.   In our Earth Day special episode, Bob interviews Scott about four moments in environmental history where communities led struggles against fossil fuel companies and governments. They dive into struggles against mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia, the southern leg of the Keystone XL pipeline, the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock and the community and grassroots led disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.   It's Earth Day 2022 and we're much worse off than we were when it started. Green and Red gets into the issues, examines the institutions at play, names names and talks about the root causes of the environmental crisis and the politics behind it.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Outro- Tom Lehrer "Pollution"   Links//  Climate Justice and Community Renewal: Resistance and Grassroots Solutions. ed. Oliver Stone's JFK Conspiracy: The Buzzanco-DiEugenio Debate (G&R 153)

Recently G&R co-host and award-winning historian Bob Buzzanco debated Oliver Stone's writer on his documentary "JFK Revisited," James DiEugenio, about Stone's theory that the "deep state" had JFK killed because he was going to withdraw from Vietnam, thaw relations with Castro, and end the Cold War.   They discussed Kennedy's actual policies as president, his aggressive actions in Vietnam and Cuba, his continued imperial approach to Latin America, his tough approach to the Soviet Union.  They also discussed the minutae of Oswald and the Warren Report, the "scenery" and "parlor games," in Stone's own words, of the JFK assassination. In this debate, Buzzanco makes the important points that people need to look at the evidence, the documents and archives of what Kennedy actually did, rather than anecdotes and stories told long after the fact.   The Left needs to organize and engage in political action, not become obsessed with alleged heroes killed long ago. It's also worth noting that those often evoking the deep state conspiracy mostly rely on deep state agencies to provide them with their "smoking gun." Thanks to Aaron Good and American Exception podcast for hosting this important debate.   Special thanks to James DiEugenio for helping us grow the Green and Red audience! ; ) ---------------------------------------------- Links// G&R: Noam Chomsky on Oliver Stone's JFK Revisited (https://apple.co/3FepBwT) G&R: Why Oliver Stone and JFK Revisited are Full of Shit. More NATO Liberals: From the End of the Cold War to War in Ukraine (G&R 152)

Part two of our deep background on the NATO liberals.    In this episode, we get into the post-Cold War presidencies of Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. The post-Cold War Clinton era is particularly instructive for U.S. foreign policy and empire today. Keeping Europe divided, Russia weak and flexing the military industrial complex muscle (i.e. massive defense budgets) on "teacup wars" in places like the former Yugoslavia and Iraq are all part of the American hegemonic project. They maintained stability and allowed markets to grow.   The Obama administration continued the Clinton and Bush II policies except with precision drone strikes.  Biden's policies have pulled the U.S. out of Afghanistan, but have been more confrontational with Russia and China.   Despite the death and misery created by U.S. wars on Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya, the NATO liberals see it, in the words of the late Secretary of State Madeline Albright, as "worth it."  -------------------------  Outro- "Love me, I'm a liberal" by Carly Cosgrove  Links//  The War Party: From Bush to Obama, and Trump to Biden, U.S. Militarism Is the Great Unifier (https://bit.ly/3LJQkF0)  The Nation: The Clinton Doctrine (https://bit.ly/3K7tuH5)  Chomsky: The Obama Doctrine (https://bit.ly/3uaqp3m)  Follow Green and Red//  https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast  Check out our new website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/  Join our Discord Party: https://bit.ly/36hqx7X  Donate to Green and Red Podcast//  Become a recurring donor at  https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast  Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR  This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production.
