American Folly: Iraq War at 20 (G&R 217)
Scott and Bob got together to commemorate, actually reminisce, about the March 2003 US invasion of Iraq. We talked about the ramp-up to the war, especially from 9/11 onward, but spent a lot of time discussing our actions here in Houston, our roots in the anti-globalization movement, and how we pivoted to become the most important left group in Houston opposing the war and holding vigils in front of Halliburton, and later disrupting the company’s shareholders meeting.
It's a not-too-pleasant trip down the memory lane of the Iraq War but also a good lesson in organizing and local political activism.

Andrew Bacevich on Ukraine, China and Our Perilous Future (G&R 215)
We had a really great conversation with Andrew Bacevich, one of the most astute, if not the preeminent, critics of American foreign policy today. We talked about the ongoing bloodshed in Ukraine, the need to find a way out, the current U.S. saber-rattling toward China, the 20th anniversary of the Iraq War, and some history of the Cold War, including NSC-68.
As always we discussed the U.S. priorities in spending billions abroad and on the military budget while problems at home mount.
Talking with Andy Bacevich is always a great education and essential viewing/listening.
Bio//
Andrew J. Bacevich Jr. is a Professor Emeritus of International Relations and History at the Boston University Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. He is a retired career officer in the Armor Branch of the United States Army, retiring with the rank of colonel.

Why Not Riot? w/ Ben Case; Plus Celebrating Jen Angel (G&R 210)
There's a Riot Going On!
We didn't talk to Sly Stone, we did even better. We talked with Ben Case (@benjamscase) the author of a provocative new book, “Street Rebellion: Resistance Beyond Violence and Nonviolence,” which challenges the long-time liberal insistence on non-violent and often non-aggressive protest and makes a case that riots are another tactic to be used by the Left.
This is a debate that's been ongoing in Left circles for a long, long time and Ben Case makes a compelling argument that by pledging "non-violence" we let the ruling class know up front that we're not going to threaten it.
Benjamin S. Case is an organizer, educator, and writer. He is a researcher at the Center for Work and Democracy and a fellow at the Resistance Studies Initiative. Case is based in Pittsburgh, PA.
We also celebrate and mourn Jen Angel-publisher, writer, anarchist, radical media activist, baker, comrade to many and longtime friend and co-conspirator of Scott’s.

What's *Really* Happening in Peru, part 2, w/ Professor Carla Toche Casalino in Lima (G&R 209)
We continued our discussion with Professor Carla Toche Casalino (@tochecasalino) in Peru about the ongoing crisis there after the December coup that ousted Pedro Castillo. There has been continued repression by the government against workers, students, peasants and others protesting the Dina Boluarte regime. Police forces have shot and killed non-violent protestors, kidnapped and arrested others, and are harassing and menacing activists.
We also discussed the international reaction to this crisis, including the role the U.S. is playing in supporting the violent Boluarte regime.
The U.S. media is giving little coverage to Peru right now, so this is an important contribution to the news about the crisis there.
Prof. Carla Toche Casalino is a political scientist from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and the Universidad Antonio Ruiz de Montoya in Lima.

Documents Show How Police Charged Atlanta Forest Defenders with "Domestic Terrorism" w/ Alleen Brown (G&R 208)
Last week, we spoke with a local Atlanta organizer about the tragic murder of Atlanta forest defender Tortuguita by Georgia State Police. We’re following up today with more on the state’s war against Stop Cop City organizing.
Since December, 19 forest defenders have been charged with "domestic terrorism" under a 2017 Georgia anti-terror law. The law originally intended for mass shootings in the wake of white supremacist Dylann Roof's massacre at a black Charleston, SC church. It was later expanded to include crimes against property and target protest on the left. Georgia authorities are now using it to enhance low level crimes in the Atlanta forest defense campaign.
In this episode, Scott talks with environmental journalist Alleen Brown (@AlleenBrown) about the troubling use of the law and her recent article on the matter in Grist.

Noam Chomsky on the 50th Anniversary of the End of the Vietnam War (G&R 207)
January 27th will mark the 50th Anniversary of the peace treaty that ended the American war against Vietnam, and Bob had a long discussion with Noam Chomsky about that event. He is Institute Professor Emeritus in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT and Laureate Professor of Linguistics and Haury Chair in the Program in Environment and Social Justice at the University of Arizona.

Police Murder Forest Defender Near Atlanta’s Proposed “Cop City” (G&R 206)
A forest defender, Manuel Teran, AKA “Tortuguita" or "Tort," was shot and killed by police on Wednesday during a violent raid of the protest camp and community gathering space that has blocked construction of an enormous police training facility known as “Cop City” on roughly 100 acres of public forest in southeast Atlanta. Vigils for the murdered forest defender Tortuguita have taken place from Oakland to Minneapolis to Charlotte to Chicago. In Atlanta, activists held a vigil the night of the shooting and are planning a march on Saturday.
Since June 2021, the Stop Cop City campaign (@defendatlforest) has resisted the construction of a police training facility and demolition of an urban forest. Through the campaign demonstrators have been pepper-sprayed, attacked, threatened and violently arrested by the police Last month, 5 protestors were arrested and charged with “domestic terrorism” On Wednesday, beside the murder of Tort, at least another 7 protestors were arrested and charged with “domestic terrorism.”
In this episode, Scott talks with Micah (@micahinatl), an Atlanta-based organizer, about the situation in Atlanta.
