Memorial Day w/ antiwar veteran Henri from the "Fortress on a Hill" Podcast (G&R 226)
The U.S. is synonymous with forever wars and empire. U.S. troops sit in 70% of the world's nations on about 800 bases. Culturally, we're taught that this necessary and we shouldn't question it and the state sponsors tributes like Memorial Day to "thank the troops for their service" but which really give people a reason to have picnics and blow off fireworks.
In our Memorial Day episode, we dive deep into Bush and Cheney's wars in the Middle East in a fascinating discussion w/antiwar vet Henri Henrikson, (@henrihateswar). We discussed his deployment and time in war zones in the Middle East, what he witnessed there, how he evolved politically to become an antiwar activist and counter-recruiter, military propaganda in films, and what he thinks Memorial Day should mean.
It's a great, moving interview with a dedicated vet and activist.
Bio//
Chris ‘Henri’ Henrikson (He/Him/His) is an Iraq war veteran from Portland, OR. He deployed in support of Operation Noble Eagle at the Pentagon following 9/11 and served two tours in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. A former MP team leader, Henri also served two years as a CID drug investigator. Now a journalist, podcaster, writer, and especially anti-war activist, Henri no longer supports the lies of imperialism or the PR spin of the politicians, wherever the source. He seeks to make common cause with anyone tired of jingoistic-driven death from the American war machine and a desire to protect the innocents of the earth, no matter their origin. Except Alex Jones. Fuck that guy.

War is Not Green ft. Teddy Ogborn w/ CODEPINK (G&R 225)
The rise of militarism and the climate crisis are intertwined in a myriad of ways. The Pentagon is largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. The U.S. has hundreds of bases around world polluting nearby communities. Money that could be preparing for climate resilience and disaster relief is used to prepare for U.S. adventures abroad. Private military contractors and the Pentagon play the same greenwashing game as the rest of the Ruling Class.
Yet, the climate movements fighting fossil fuels, corporate financiers, and climate denying and climate neo-liberal politicians have little in way of consciousness about the intersections between the climate crisis, war, empire and militarism.
We dive deep into this subject with the coordinator of CODEPINK's War is Not Green (WING) campaign- Teddy Ogborn. We also discuss CODEPINK's WING campaign against financial giant Blackrock.
Teddy Ogborn is an activist and organizer based in New York City with a BA in Comparative Literature from Haverford College. They have several years of experience in documentary storytelling, strategic organizing, and direct action, particularly with climate actions in New York and New Jersey. Teddy is CODEPINK’s (@codepink) War Is Not Green (WING) Coordinator where they focus on the intersection of militarism and climate change.

Best of G&R: Inside "The White House Plumbers" w/ author Matt Krogh (G&R 223)
HBO just premiered a new mini-series called "The White House Plumbers" starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. It's based on a book by former Nixon domestic advisor Egil "Bud" Krogh, a key player in the administration's secret espionage unit, aka "The Plumbers," and his son Matt Krogh. G&R talked to Matt last year on the 50th anniversary of the Watergate break-in. We're reposting the episode to coincide with the HBO series' premiere.
From 2022:
"June 17th, 2022 was the 50th anniversary of the Watergate break in. In 1972, five men were arrested breaking into the Democratic National Committee HQ at the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. They were part of a group that operated out of the Nixon White House called the “Plumbers.” Their job was to investigate leaks in the White House and conduct other surveillance and sabotage against Nixon’s political enemies.
One of the heads of the White House Plumbers was Egil “Bud” Krogh. Krogh passed away in 2020, but before his death, he co-wrote a memoir of his experience in the Nixon Administration's secret espionage unit with his son Matt Krogh (@mattkrogh).
In our Watergate anniversary episode, we talk with Matt Krogh about his father Egil Krogh, the Plumbers and the Nixon administration. We also talk about the Watergate scandal in relation to the current political environment.
Bio//
Matt Krogh is the co-author, with his father, the late Egil “Bud” Krogh, of "The White House Plumbers" (out this fall), along with its earlier iteration "Integrity." HBO has made a mini-series based on the book starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux.
By day, Matt is a professional change maker focused on issues of climate change, fossil fuels, and policy. Mostly based in Bellingham, Washington, he has spent his career in nonprofit activism at various organizations, and has worked as a freelance writer, ranger, and geographic analyst. He currently co-owns Warthog Information Systems (www.warthogis.com), a company focused on using geographic information to make the world a better place.
He is grateful for the opportunity to amplify his dad's important life lessons through co-authoring The White House Plumbers, along with its earlier iteration Integrity."

Best of G&R: The Importance of Karl Marx w/ Prof. David McNally (G&R 222)
Karl Marx would have been 205 today. So we're re-sharing our birthday episode interview with Prof. David McNally about Marx from 2022.
David McNally is one of the more important Marxist scholars in the world, and we talked to him today on the anniversary of Karl Marx's birth--May 5th, 1818. McNally discussed a wide array of topics, including his introduction to Marxist thought, important texts to use to discover Marx's writings, the importance of Marx's concept of "alienated labor," his formulation of class struggle, and why democracy is essential to socialism.
We also discussed the history of Marx's influence in European politics and how Americans came to discover Marx in the late 19th Century. And we finished with a discussion of why Marx remains relevant today and why Marxism is seeing a resurgence.
David McNally is the Cullen Distinguished Professor of History and Business at the University of Houston. He specializes in the history and political economy of capitalism. The author of seven books and over 60 scholarly articles, Professor McNally taught political economy at York University in Toronto before joining the Department of History at the University of Houston.

Best of G&R: Tin Soldiers and Nixon's Coming . . . 52 Years After the Kent State Killings (G&R 159)
It's the 52nd anniversary of the killings at Kent State University. In a special encore episode, we're reposting our episode from 2020.In this episode, we commemorate the anniversary of the tragic events of May 4th, 1970 at Kent State University, where agents of the state murdered 4 students and shot 9 others. Students, who'd been told the war was winding down in Vietnam, erupted in protest at campuses all over America when Richard Nixon announced the U.S. invasion of Cambodia on April 30th. At Kent State, a working-class public school in Northeast Ohio, protesting students and other burned down an ROTC building, a common target in the Vietnam protest era, and Ohio Governor James Rhodes, vowing a violent response, mobilized the National Guard and sent them to Kent. For two days the students and Guard skirmished, with the paramilitaries hurling tear gas and intimidating students. On May 4th, the Guard, unprovoked, started shooting into the crowd of students and shot 13, killing 4, from distances beyond 300 feet. These were extrajudicial killings and a sure sign the state would murder anyone who challenged its interests. The war had come home! Scott and Bob, who's also a historian of the Vietnam War and the 1960s and has published extensively on those subjects, talk about the background to the protests, the official, violent response, the aftermath at places like Jackson State, where 2 more students were killed, and the larger context of anti-state protests and their meaning, and lessons.--------------------------------------------------------------Outro// "My City Was Gone" by The PretendersLinks//Kent State Tribunal Organization, established by Laurel Krause, sister of one of the students assassinated that day (https://bit.ly/3w2spdR);interview with Alan Canfora, one of the survivors of the shootings (https://bit.ly/3OUyjGq);The Kent State May 4th Poetry Collection; Denise Levertov, "The Day the Audience Walked Out on Me, and Why" (https://bit.ly/3kIVyFv);Governor Rhodes press conference, May 3 (https://bit.ly/37cIk0R);Robert Buzzanco, Vietnam and the Transformation of American Life (https://bit.ly/3kB21ST).Follow Green and Red//https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcastCheck out our new website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/Donate to Green and Red Podcast//Become a recurring donor at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcastOr make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandRThis is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. It’s scrappy May Day!
Bob and Scott break down May Day with a little history of labor struggle from 1877-1937, current labor struggles including unionization (and union busting) at REI, wins at the University of Minnesota and Stanford and past anti-nuclear actions on May Day.
They also talk about Tucker Carlson and how he wasn’t taken off the air by the Deep State, and Bernie’s endorsement of Joe Biden’s re-election and the continued deadly reliance on electoralism by liberals.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Aims to Pardon Racist Murderer Daniel Perry ft. Truthout's Candice Bernd (G&R 219)
In July 2020, former US Army Sgt. Daniel Perry shot and killed Garrett Foster, a racial justice protester and Air Force veteran, at a Black Lives Matter rally in Austin, TX. Last month, Perry was convicted of the murder after arguing self-defense. After being goaded by Tucker Carlson, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced that he was expediting a pardon request on Perry’s behalf. But now, unsealed evidence has revealed texts, emails and social media posts from Daniel Perry that show he'd talked about shooting protestors in the summer of 2020, and a number of racist comments he'd made about blacks and Muslims. It's also been revealed that Perry has propositioned minors on the internet. This has put Abbott in a precarious position. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles (made up of seven Abbott appointees) will also hear from Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza and Garrett Foster's family about why the conviction of Daniel Perry should be upheld.
We talk with Truthout editor and staff reporter Candice Bernd (@candicebernd) about Greg Abbott's aims to pardon racist murderer Daniel Perry. We also talk about the horrible response by the Austin Police Dept. to Foster's family and Greg Abbott's plans to turn Texas into more of a police state. We then talk about progressive media in Texas, the Texas Observer and it's miraculous comeback after almost closing down.

Candice Bernd is senior editor/staff reporter at Truthout. Her work has also appeared in several other publications, including The Nation, In These Times, the Texas Observer, Salon, Rewire News Group, Sludge, YES! Magazine and Earth Island Journal. Her latest article “Travis County DA Garza to Defend Daniel Perry Conviction at Parole Board” appears in Truthout and the Texas Observer.
