Forget balance, you need a flywheel

This series, I'm sharing insights from my book Work/Life Flywheel. In this episode, I discuss why the idea of Work/Life Balance needs rethinking and how the Flywheel model can help you reframe the relationship between work and life.Chapter Summary:Perfectly balancing work and life is impossible.Rather than looking for momentary harmony, you need a model that enables constant progress. The Flywheel Effect occurs when each part of a business model is interdependent and complementary, creating a virtuous circle.      Amazon built multiple businesses by designing Flywheels built on an obsession with creating customer value. An effective Flywheel is never static – it’s constantly in motion, evolving and expanding. What’s common to every Flywheel is that no single part is more important than another – they have to work together in harmony. The Work/Life Flywheel is built on six interconnected parts – Mindset, Creativity, Experimentation, Community, Learning, and Breakthroughs.LINKS:Book Ollie to speak with your teamOllie's LinkedInFuture Work/Life NewsletterWork/Life Flywheel: Harness the work revolution and reimagine your career without fear, is out now. Without Fear

This series, I'm sharing insights from my book Work/Life Flywheel. In today's episode, I discuss why genuine fears, like financial risk, combine with reputational risk to stop people from making positive changes.Chapter summary from Work/Life Flywheel:Going it alone isn’t easy, but financial uncertainty is often outweighed by the fulfilment you get from a work/life characterised by creativity, experimentation and constant learning. With more opportunities than ever before, to make a change, now is the perfect time to take action. Most people don’t do it because of a fear of failure, but you’re more likely to regret inaction than action.Self-compassion helps you become happier, healthier, better motivated and more satisfied with life.Facing up to your emotions and revealing them to others alleviates anxiety and lowers the risk of depression.Imagining you’re talking to a friend or talking to yourself gives you a detached, objective view of your decision.Using the mental model of living in the future, improves your short and long-term decision making.LINKS:Book Ollie to speak with your teamOllie's LinkedInFuture Work/Life NewsletterWork/Life Flywheel: Harness the work revolution and reimagine your career without fear, is out now.
