Share The Love Episode- Making Yin Yoga Accessible with Kathyn Anne Flynne

BonusWhile I am on a small holiday break from the podcast, I thought it would be fun to re-share some of the episodes of other people's podcasts where I have been interviewed about Yin Yoga. This mini-series of episodes is what I'm calling - Share The Love!In this Share The Love Episode I'm interviewed by one of the OG - Yoga Podcasters Kathryn Anne Flynn Of the Intelligent Edge Podcast (now archived) Kathryn is a fellow Canadian and like me a holder of unpopular opinions.A bit about Kathryn:Kathryn Anne Flynn is an old soul - a smart, warm, and occasionally humorous Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and Yoga educator living in Ottawa, Canada. She brings more than 12 years of experience as an educator, silent retreat leader, and author on yoga, Ayurveda, and meditation.Kathryn is a 500 ERYT certified teacher of Ayurvedic Yoga, Master of Arts in English, Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, and is also completing certification as an Ayurvedic Health Counsellor.Kathryn is a student of Buddhism, inspired by and greatly missing Michael Stone. Yin Yoga and Interoception- with Pamela Crane

S 1 | EP. 12CW: Passive suicidal ideationI've invited Pamela to come on to talk about interoception. So, interoception is a word that I have never heard. Until I took my yoga therapy training and I used it a lot now when I train teacher,s and it seems like unless you're in the yoga therapy circles or in therapy circles, people don't know what this word means. And in my opinion, yin yoga is especially good at cultivating interoception. And so that's why I thought I would have Pamela come on and talk about it with me. So here is Pamela's official bio. Pamela Crane is a certified yoga therapist with a master's degree in yoga therapy. She is a certified International Association of Yoga Therapists, and she's also an experienced registered yoga teacher at the 500 level. She provides group and individual mindfulness and yoga therapy services to businesses and organizations specializing in yoga for military members, and dancers. And those with confidence and self-esteem issues, she has presented stress management seminars at the U S department of health and services, the U S department of education, and the U S P S headquarters to name a few. She's presented nationally and internationally at symposiums and conferences for yoga and integrated medicine. And she's also a film and commercial actress. A former broadcast journalist. As I mentioned, the host of the Yoga Pro podcast, where she discusses current trends in the field of yoga and integrative health. My Interview on Pamela's Podcast - The Yoga Pro Podcast https://www.theyogapropodcast.com/therapeutic-yin-yoga-with-nyk-danu/Pamela's website: https://www.interoceptiveperformance.comhttps://www.instagram.com/gratefullypamela/Yoga Teachers: Join The Waitlist for my Therapeutic Yin Yoga Training at the bottom and top of the PageTo Join my Yin Yoga Classes on ZoomTo subscribe to my On-Demand Video Library:Full Show NotesAnatomy for Yoga with Paul GrilleyHang Drum Music by Fred Westra

Should you Use music in Yoga Yin Yoga Class?

S 1 | EP. 11If you want some entertainment, go into any Yoga Facebook group, especially ones for teachers, and type out the question, should you use music in your Yoga classes and then watch the piranhas come? I don't know why this is such a dogmatic opinion for Yoga teachers, but it tends to be. People get really worked up about whether or not you should use music in your Classes. And of course, because this is a Yin podcast, I'm going to talk about this from a Yin perspective, but I'm not going to tell you whether or not you should use music in your classes. Because that's up for you to decide, but what I do want to talk about is why we might choose to use music, why we might not choose to use music, some things about music and the style and the type of music that you use that you may not have thought of.And then also just very briefly, can you even legally use music in your classes? A lot of teachers don't know this, but it's not so easy to just throw on your Spotify list. You could actually be breaking the law. All right, let's dive into some of that. Shall we?Regular Podcast Links for Spotify/Blog:Yoga Teachers: Join The Waitlist for my Therapeutic Yin Yoga Training at the bottom and top of the PageTo Join my Yin Yoga Classes on ZoomTo subscribe to my On-Demand Video Library:Full Show NotesAnatomy for Yoga with Paul GrilleyHang Drum Music by Fred Westra

Emotions in Yin Yoga

S 1 | EP. 10The role of emotions in Yin Yoga is a topic that I often see questions about from teachers and in my teacher training, or in a Facebook group. And I want to be clear here that Yin Yoga doesn't cause emotions. So, practicing Yin isn't what creates the emotions, but the emotions can come up in Yin. They often come up because we're finally still and quiet, and we have time.So emotions that might not have been processed throughout the day, throughout your week, your month, your year, your life. The emotions you've been kind of pushing to the side because you're busying yourself, being a human doing instead of a human being. Whether this is yourself or your students, those emotions don't have anywhere to go and they just hang there and wait until there's a time to release them, to process them. I'm also going to talk a little bit about some of the mistakes that teachers make in what they say in class. So here we go. It's going to be an emotional ride, pun intended. Take a moment to grab your tea, your coffee, and your headphones, settle in and we'll get into this.Mentioned in this Video Brene Brown Empathy vs Sympathy https://youtu.be/KZBTYViDPlQ?si=L6yheroFL345yS_wYoga Teachers: Join The Waitlist for my Therapeutic Yin Yoga Training at the bottom and top of the PageTo Join my Yin Yoga Classes on ZoomTo subscribe to my On-Demand Video Library:Full Show NotesAnatomy for Yoga with Paul GrilleyHang Drum Music by Fred Westra

The Mind In Yin Yoga

S 1 | EP. 9Dealing with the mind in Yin Yoga is for many of us the most difficult part of a Yin Yoga practice. Many of my students don't even realize how busy their mind is until they start practicing Yin Yoga.So If you (or your students) have ever had the experience of settling into the stillness and quiet of Yin and had to deal with the circus or soap opera of your mind you are not alone. In this episode, I'll address the mind and share some simple but effective tips that you can use in your own practice or in the classes you teach. Tips for anchoring and befriending the mind instead of seeing it as an obstacle to practice OK let's dive inYoga Teachers: Join The Waitlist for my Therapeutic Yin Yoga Training at the bottom and top of the PageTo Join my Yin Yoga Classes on ZoomTo subscribe to my On-Demand Video Library:Full Show NotesAnatomy for Yoga with Paul GrilleyHang Drum Music by Fred Westra

Mindfulness & Yin Yoga

S 1 | EP. 8What is Mindfulness, and how can we use it in Yin Yoga?Mindfulness has become a bit of a buzzword that seems to have lost its meaning.Originally a Buddhist concept but sadly has been co-opted and is being used everywhere from wellness circles to advertising. It seems like most people have kind of a vague idea about what Mindfulness is but can't likely define it, let alone incorporate it into our lives. Our Yin Yoga practice is an ideal time to add bite-sized Mindfulness practices into our lives. In this episode, My Guest Addie deHilster and I talk about mindfulness and yin yoga (among many other great nuggets) Addie D. Hilster is a mindfulness meditation teacher. She's also certified by the International Association of Yoga Therapists. Her passion is teaching movement practices that unlock mindfulness skills and help students gain traction in their meditation practice so that they can be more present in their lives.Yin Yoga is one of the main modalities that she practices and teaches. And it's an excellent doorway to an embodied meditative stillness. She's now based in Vancouver, Washington in the US, but she previously owned and operated a community yoga studio in Los Angeles, California for over five years. She's a dedicated practitioner of Buddhist insight meditation, and she's accumulated over four months of silent retreat practice over the years. She's also a graduate of the Mindfulness Mentor Training with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brock, the Insight LA Mindfulness Facilitator Training and the 2014/ 2015 Mindful Yoga and Meditation training program at the Spirit Rock Center. She has studied Yin Yoga with Bernie Clark, Paul Grilley, and Sarah Powers. Addie is the founder of the Move to Meditate class library. And the host of the Move to Meditate podcast. You can find Addie here: https://movedtomeditate.yogaMy interview on Addies Podcast: https://movedtomeditate.yoga/?s=nyk+danuAddies' Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/addie_movedtomeditate/Yoga Teachers: Join The Waitlist for my Therapeutic Yin Yoga Training at the bottom and top of the PageTo Join my Yin Yoga Classes on ZoomTo subscribe to my On-Demand Video Library:Anatomy for Yoga with Paul Grilley But what actually IS mindfulness and how can we add that to our Yin Yoga Practice?

Yin Yoga Is Totally Hardcore

S 1 | EP. 7So today I wanted to talk a little bit more in-depth about an article that I wrote a while back for Elephant Journal. And I will link the article in the show notes. And the inspiration for this was one night I was walking into a Yoga studio that I teach at, and there was, just a little interaction, you could say, with one of the students from the previous classes that inspired this article. So as I was entering the studio to set up for my Yin class, the previous class was sort of one of those hot, kind of sweaty, you know, styles of class. And there was a young, really strong kind of Ken doll-looking guy who was in the previous class and said to me, Oh, what class is up next? And I could tell by the look on his face and the inquiry that he wanted to double up and attend two classes in a row. And when I answered him, yin yoga, he said, and I quote, fuck that. That shit scares me. I'll take a handstand workshop over a yin class any day. And that's when I realized it.The article is called Yin Yoga is Totally Hardcore. Yin Yoga is Totally hardcore.Yoga Teachers: Join The Waitlist for my Therapeutic Yin Yoga Training at the bottom and top of the PageTo Join my Yin Yoga Classes on ZoomTo subscribe to my On-Demand Video Library:Full Show NotesAnatomy for Yoga with Paul GrilleyHang Drum Music by Fred Westra

Yes, you need a Yin Yoga Training to teach Yin

S 1 | EP. 6 If you have ever thought to yourself, do I really need a Yin Yoga teacher training? In this episode, I talk about Yin Yoga teacher training. Specifically about why you need one if you're gonna teach Yin, and then some things to look at when you are deciding what Yin yoga teacher training to take. There are so many little details that are different when you start transitioning into teaching a more quiet, still style of yoga, like Yin, that it really becomes a case of you don't know what you don't know.So if you want to teach yin, if you have a crush on yin, if you've fallen in love with yin, you want to go deeper, both in your own practice and you want to start teaching it and offering it, please seek out good training. The other episode I mentioned: https://nykdanu.com/teachers/yin-yoga-podcast/what-is-therapeutic-yin-yoga/Yoga Teachers: Join The Waitlist for my Therapeutic Yin Yoga Training at the bottom and top of the PageTo Join my Yin Yoga Classes on ZoomTo subscribe to my On-Demand Video Library:Full Show NotesAnatomy for Yoga with Paul GrilleyHang Drum Music by Fred Westra

What Is Therapeutic Yin Yoga?

S 1 | EP. 5What is therapeutic Yoga, what is a Yoga therapist, what is therapeutic Yin Yoga, and how has that affected my Yin training? So what do I mean when I say that I teach Therapeutic Yin Yoga, What does that even mean? How did I change the way I taught Yin Yoga and trained teachers after taking my Yoga Therapy training and my Traditional Chinese Medicine studies?Well, for me, it's now a combination of Yin Yoga, Yoga Therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine. In this episode, I'm going to just clarify how I'm defining these things. Because Yoga is an unregulated industry, there is a little bit of a wild, wild west with how we use words and what definitions things have.So I want to be really clear on how I'm defining these things before we get into it, just so there's no confusion.enjoy.Yoga Teachers: Join The Waitlist for my Therapeutic Yin Yoga Training at the bottom and top of the PageTo Join my Yin Yoga Classes on ZoomTo subscribe to my On-Demand Video Library:Full Show NotesAnatomy for Yoga with Paul GrilleyHang Drum Music by Fred Westra
