Lee Price: Activating Prayer Training (Ep #9)

Lee Price (Episode #9) Cory and Brian have a second interview with Lee Price. This week we asked Lee to walk us through each of the steps in Activating Prayer. Rather than this just being an interview about Lee’s work, this is more of an equipping podcast with some “on-the-field experiences” mixed in. The stories will demonstrate what this type of prayer looks like in action. Some of these stories, and the ideas and language that Lee uses may stretch your religious world-views a bit depending on the type of background you have. For some of you it resonate deeply. We’d challenge you to come with an open and generous spirit to say “Jesus, what do you want me to hear out of this today? What’s one new step I can take in extraordinary prayer?” Be challenged. Find someone that you can share this with and ask them to have a conversation with you about it. Our hope is that this training will support the work you’re doing in your context.     Activating Prayer Introduction [1:15] The Starting Place is Covering Prayer [6:28] Covering Prayer Example [6:45] Taking Ownership [8:26] Establishing a beachhead [16:00] Observing What’s Going on Around You [18:23] Obedience [22:05] Ask the Lord about binding the enemy [25:20] Bind the Strong Man [25:45] Ask if you need to bring in other people [29:00] Blessing Prayers [30:30] Pray for Personal Cleansing [33:00] Example of Cleansing Prayer [35:00] Final Overview of the Steps [37:12]  Resources Mentioned in Podcast Lectio365 [3:10] Prayer Walking our Missional Space  Next step with the Underground: Subscribe to our newsletter Connect with us for Coaching Support the Underground

Sam Metcalf: Prayer Precedes Movement (Episode #7)

In this episode of the Underground Podcast, Brian and Cory interview Sam Metcalf, the president of Novo. Sam and Patty Metcalf were one of four families that founded Novo in 1980, and he has served as president since 1985. He holds an undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree from the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Seminary, and a doctorate from the Fuller School of Theology. He also is an adjunct professor of Missional Practice in the SIS at Fuller. Sam also coordinates CoNext, the global partnership of Novo-like mission entities in a dozen nations that share mutual mission, vision, and values, all led by national leadership. Sam is ordained in the Evangelical Free Church of America. His book, Beyond the Local Church: How Apostolic Movements Can Change the World (InterVarsity Press) is a clarion affirmation to those called to ministry beyond the boundaries of local churches and a validation of the structures necessary for these apostolic leaders to thrive. He’s authored an array of other booklets and articles (available online through Novo). Patty is equally involved in ministry with a particular focus on healing prayer and intercession. Sam and Patty live in Southern California and have a son and daughter, both married, and five grandchildren.   While Sam will talk about the paradigm and idea of leading with prayer, you’ll be encouraged with some practices as well. This episode will probably push the “church filters” for many, but it was a powerful experience as Sam shares stories from his years of experience with making the supernatural natural. Let it push and stretch you. Experiment and practice as Sam suggests, see where Holy Spirit takes you.   1:07 – Cory chokes on a peanut 1:31 – Sam Metcalf paragraph from Engaging the Supernatural 2:40 – Sam responds about prayer and movements components 3:40 – 1st essential component: Activating Prayer 5:40 – Power of Blessing Prayer 8:05 – Equipping on Blessing Prayer 11:11 – Before we ever pray, the first thing we want to do is listen 13:13 – This is an identity reality 14:00 – Story of Serbia 14:36 – Southern California Story 15:18 – Resistance/Receptivity Axis 16:20 – We’ve skipped the hard part of praying first 22:45 – How do we disciple people into these ways of prayer 24:05 – Teach, Train, Transmitting 28:17 – Seeing in the supernatural 34:00 – Experiment and try it 34:30 – Biblical, non-biblical, extra-biblical 39:50 – Prayer of Blessing over the Underground   Resources: Engaging the Supernatural – Sam Metcalf – 1:31 Beyond the Local Church – Sam Metcalf – 2:47 Ffald y Brenin – Wales – 4:52 Grace Outpouring – Roy Godwin – 5:40 The Way of Blessing – Roy Godwin – 5:45 Next Steps With the Underground Next step with the Underground: Subscribe to our newsletter Connect with us for Coaching Support the Underground

We take care of the depth, God takes care of the breadth: Becca Patton (Episode #5)

Cory and Brian interview Becca Patton. Becca is a campus minister at the University of Evansville in Indiana. In this role she engages and disciples students to become confident carriers of the Gospel through outreaches, discipleship training, leadership development and ownership of Christ’s Kingdom vision. Becca’s calling is to make disciples of Jesus that impact their campus, community and the nations. This isn’t your normal campus ministry. Find the One to Reach the Many: Phil Alessi (episode #4)

Find the One to Reach the Many Cory and Brian interview Phil Alessi about the idea of having a mindset for movement. Phil unexpectedly launched a movement within a prison in Indiana through his meetings with just one inmate, Donnie, and now can chronicle about 3,200 new disciples who have come to Christ through this movement in three years. The story of what’s happened in Indiana has inspired many others to launch similar ministries and refined strategies for leaders who already had ministries going in prisons. This is one of the key ways the gospel movement in Indiana has gained momentum—not just through the prisoners themselves, but through the multiplication of new ministries all over the world. The gospel movement in Indiana has become a “learning laboratory” for movement, and leaders working to launch movements in all kinds of contexts (not only prisons) have been able to glean valuable strategies and encouragement from it. Phil explains. “That’s really the point of it. That’s how a gospel movement works. You can’t control it, you can’t keep your hands on it. You have to give it away, letting someone else be greater than you. That’s what’s happening in this movement. Phil found one. The rest is history—and a very different future for thousands of people. Phil Alessi and his wife Ruthann have been with CRM since 2002 and currently serve on the Advance Team (previously Accelerate) in Northwest Indiana. They have discipled people of peace who have ignited gospel movements in area jails and prisons. Their vision is to mentor and multiply the leaders of Disciple Making Movements. *The language from this introduction was borrowed from the novo.org action blog. Mindset, Momentum, Movement

Brian and Cory explore the idea of disciple-making movements. What does that phrase even mean? How do you know you have one? What leads to a movement?  We’ve overused another word in the Christian world. We’ve become obsessed with the idea of movement, and we might be using the word to describe something we want to be a part of rather than something that is actually happening. Instead of over-selling our work, we’ll explore other language that can help us make incremental steps in order to see movement as the fruit of a long-term work.    Why do we talk about movement?
