What Do You Wear to Work? - Thoughts from Kevin
As long as I’ve been in the workplace, there’s always been a conversation about the dress code. In fact, when I first started working for Chevron, I was handed a copy of “Dress for Success” as part of the onboarding process. Since then, the conversation has moved from “Casual Friday”…to casual every day…to the day when everyone was sent home to work and the dress code as we knew it changed significantly. Now before you think this post and this video is about fashion, let me reassure you, it’s not. Instead, in this episode, I’m talking about how what we choose to wear has some pretty big implications far beyond what style of clothing is our favorite. Tweet it out: Your choice of what to wear to work (even when at home) may have more implications than you realize for yourself and how you are perceived by others. @KevinEikenberry From This Episode: Learn more about and get a copy of The Long-Distance Teammate here.

Trusting Yourself with Melody Wilding
It’s important to understand who you are before getting to the why. Some of us are more logical and task oriented. Others of us focus on our emotions, our environment, and the behavior of others to guide our success. Melody Wilding suggests these “Sensitive Strivers” can anticipate the needs of the team because they are aware of how others are feeling. This empathy can also preclude them from making decisions because they are worried about what others will think. Melody is the author of Trust Yourself: Stop Overthinking and Channel Your Emotions for Success at Work and draws on decades of research and client work to examine the intersection of sensitivity and achievement in the workplace. She and Kevin discuss the journey of professional and personal development starting at self-awareness and moving to self-growth. Lessons Learned at an Auction - Thoughts from Kevin
I. Love. Auctions. And I love pretty much any type of auction. But my favorite is hands-down an antique tractor auction. (Yep, they exist.) And while if you like auctions, this video might be even more interesting to you. But regardless, I’m sharing the lessons that I learned from a recent tractor auction – and these apply to ANY leader, auction lover or not. Tweet it out: There are leadership and life lessons to be found at an auction – go to watch and learn – even if you don’t buy anything. @KevinEikenberry From This Episode: Get a short, inspirational email tip every Monday – Friday by signing up for Kevin’s Daily Email here.

The Unconventional Path to Breakthrough Ideas with Cyril Bouquet
How do new ideas come about? Cyril Bouquet is the co-author of ALIEN THINKING: The Unconventional Path to Breakthrough Ideas. Although new, innovative ideas seem to appear magically, they take time to emerge, mature and become successful. Cyril and his co-authors studied professions of people who challenge existing paradigms (inventors, artists, scientists). They found these folks use five patterns of thinking that distinguish them from the rest of us. These patterns -Attention, Levitation, Imagination, Experimentation, and Navigation- can help innovative thinking and problem-solving. He also says the navigation piece can be the most difficult because this is where the “rubber meets the road” and often where we face the most resistance. When Are You at Your Best? - Thoughts from Kevin
You might know that I grew up on a farm. And on a farm, you work late into the evening when needed. You see, my Dad was a night person. So it was not uncommon for me to work very late into the evening. Because of this, I grew up thinking I was a night person. That is until I wasn’t around my Dad and wasn’t needed to work those nighttime shifts anymore. And it was then that I quickly realized I am at my best in the morning and not in the evening. It took me awhile to figure this out, but when you know your “power time”, you know when you’re at your best. In this episode, I’ll help you determine your “power time” so that you can capitalize on these hours when you are at your best.

Insights into the science of Leadership at Amazon with Bill Carr
What makes Amazon different? What are the secrets to their success? Bill Carr would say they aren’t really secrets, but it does take innovative management. Bill is a former Amazon executive and the co-author with Colin Bryer of Working Backwards: Insights, Stories and Secrets from Inside Amazon. Bill and Kevin dig deep into the idea of working backwards. It starts with leaders being customer-obsessed, finding out what they want/need and work backward. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. We meet with lots of folks each day, many of whom are not our customers. So, we need to go out of our way to think about the customer. Bill also shares the four characteristics that help define the company culture and how this applies to leaders at any level. Get a Vision and Live It with Larry Olsen
Do you have to? or Do you want to? We all have a choice. Larry Olsen is the author of Get a Vision and Live It. He joins Kevin to discuss how people can learn to change their attitudes to align with their visions. Our brain makes decisions based on the past, not what the future holds; our growth is limited. We can’t change the past, but we can envision what we want our reality to be. You get what you think about. Prosperity is the here and now. It is the version that is ready for the moment about to happen. It is not based on the past, which can lead to disengagement or cynicism. Larry believes you are where you need to be to make great things happen. This episode is brought to you by… Unleashing Your Remarkable Potential, Kevin’s free weekly e-newsletter. Saying No with Love - Thoughts from Kevin
The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say no to almost everything. You’ve gotta keep control of your time, and you can’t unless you say no. You can’t let people set your agenda in life. – Warren Buffett Now who am I to argue with Warren Buffett? I completely agree that we must be protective of our time and that how we spend our time is directly correlated to our success. And yet…I am not advocating that we immediately say NO to everything. It’s important to use judgement always in our decisions. And that when we do say no, we say it with love. Tweet it out: To achieve our goals sometimes we must say no – but we can say no in a way that preserves relationships and future opportunities – that’s saying no with love. @KevinEikenberry From This Episode: Get a short, inspirational email tip every Monday – Friday by signing up for Kevin’s Daily Email here.

Connecting with Others Through Listening with Ximena Vengoechea
Ernest Hemingway said, “When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” Ximena Vengoechea thinks Ernest may be on to something. She is the author of Listen Like You Mean It: Reclaiming the Lost Art of True Connection. As a user researcher, she understands the importance of listening for understanding. This is true for product research and organizational success. Often, we find ourselves default listening. We are sort of paying attention, yet we don’t get the true experience or the emotions of the talker. Ximena tells Kevin we need to move to empathetic listening, which starts with the intention to listen. A listening mindset begins with humility, curiosity, and empathy. When we bring this to the table, not only are we better people, but we are also better leaders.
