513 - You Can Invent Something Life-Changing: Chief Don DeLuca Gives a Case Study of What it Takes to Go from Idea to Action

Someone sent me a video of a young 20-something-year-old getting tasered in the shower by a police officer. He was mentally ill.  I thought, "This needs to change." And it is. Thanks to Chief Don Deluca, Scott Cohen and the whole team behind BolaWrap, a new technology that helps officers restrain people without using extreme force. Their story is proof that problems in society don't have to stay problems forever. You can look at something difficult that hasn't changed in 20 years and say, "I'm going to do something about this." And that's what this episode will walk you through. You'll learn how to go from problem to idea to action. So you can feel empowered to make the changes you want to see, too. 511 - What’s Valid Work?: Mike Rowe, “Dirty Jobs” Host on Where Dignity Comes From & How to Feel This In Your Life

Mike Rowe has been a TV personality for a long time. He's best known as the host of "Dirty Jobs" where he shows the world what it's like to do dangerous and disgusting jobs. Mike showed us that there's dignity in work. Of all kinds. In this episode, I ask Mike what made him want to do that show. He told me, "Curiosity." "It's no less valid to wonder how a sewer works than how the Hubble works." Mike shows that work is not about prestige. It's about providing... something so many of us forget to recognize ourselves for. Even if we deserve to. I write about all my podcasts! 510 - How to Build a Community That Loves You: Jeannie Gaffigan Speaks About The Support That Came with Battling Brain Cancer

I'm jealous of Jeannie Gaffigan's brain tumor. Not the tumor itself. Or the feeding tube. Or side effects. But I'm jealous of the community that came to her side. I told her, "I'm afraid that if this ever happens to me, I won't have the love and support that you've built up over the years." She had a mega support system... neighbors and family who got her the best doctors, plus friends and colleagues who worked with her when she wrote and produced "The Jim Gaffigan Show." She laughed. Because it's the weirdest thing to be jealous of. But she understood. And told me not to worry. "I had no idea I had this [support system]. It took this. You have it. You just don't know. Like me. I didn't know it." She wrote all about this in her new book, "When Life Gives You Pears: The Healing Power of Family, Faith, and Funny People." Which you can also listen to on Audible. It'll make you laugh. And help you feel more connected. And more capable of handling life's hardest moments. Also if you want to know how to reshape your life, maybe start over, try a new career move, make a new income stream or whatever you need to feel refreshed, then I have a book for you. 509 - Be Big Enough to Change Your Circumstances: Eric Adams Shares How He Went From "Bad Kid" to Brooklyn Borough President

Eric Adams was beat by the police at age 15. "They kicked us in the groin over and over again. We were urinating blood for seven days." So when Eric grew up, he became a cop. "I had no idea I was going to last for 22 years," he said. "I thought I would be there a year. And then they'd say, 'Get rid of this guy. This guy's a trouble maker." But that never happened. He got promoted. "I was driven. The plan was to go in there with a mission. The mission was to find ways to make communities safe without being in disgrace. How do you turn this noble profession into what it ought to be?" Later on, Eric became a state senator and now he's Brooklyn Borough President with a new mission to become mayor. In this episode, you'll hear Eric talk about his drive. And how he turns visions into missions. With real hope. And real possibility. -- New announcement. 507 - Back from the Dead: Kamal Ravikant Shares How His Near-Death Experience Led to Inner Peace

Kamal Ravikant went to the hospital for a scheduled elective surgery. Everything went great. Until the stitches inside his body ripped. And he felt pain in his stomach. He asked the nurse for medicine. Soon his was spurting blood everywhere. One of the residents held him down to try to stop the bleeding. Kamal sat there in fear as he watched the inside of his liquids get all over this man. They had to get him back into surgery. But this time they didn't know if he'd make it out loud. Right before they put the oxygen mask on, Kamal told the doctor, "I'm scared." She held his hand. And he disappeared out of consciousness. Now he's back. He's alive. And he came on the podcast to share what it feels like to start dying. And how living... surviving brought him a new sense of knowing what matters. And what doesn't.   I write about all my podcasts!
