Episode 158: Claire Fauquier - Principal, Highland Capital Partners
I once read a blog post that stated an interesting fact. The number of professional athletes in the U.S. is equal to the number of positions in venture capital. Needless to say, positions are scarce in the VC industry and they are highly sought after.
For Claire, she was determined to land a position in venture capital after getting her MBA at Wharton. She devoted months of her time sitting in coffee shops researching and learning the industry, while creating a recruiting plan, cold emailing VC firms, and offering her research to investors in hopes of landing an open position.
Well - Her determination paid off when she joined Corigin Ventures and she recently joined Highland to help the firm built out its New York office. Highland has a long history of success as a leading VC firm and their track record speaks for itself to the tune of 46 IPOs and 127 acquisitions.
In this episode of our podcast, we cover:
* How living in Kenya for six months influenced her career.
* Her experience working in investment banking during the economic crisis.
* How dedication and commitment through cold emailing landed Claire a position in the VC industry.
* All the details on Highland Capital Partners and what she is targeting for investments.
* How to get investors to respond to cold email pitches.
* What first-time founders can expect during the process of raising capital.
* And more!

Episode 157: Semyon Dukach - Managing Partner, One Way Ventures
Semyon’s professional journey started out in a rather unconventional manner. As one of the members of the famed MIT Blackjack team, he’s always had an incredible knack and drive for mastering whatever challenge was in front of him.
After living the life of a high roller, Semyon went on to become a successful founder of multiple tech companies but he found his true calling when he started angel investing and running the Techstars Boston program. He realized that his passion was really centered around helping other entrepreneurs succeed.
Today, Semyon is the Founder and Managing Partner of One Way Ventures, a venture fund that is focused on investing in immigrant founders.
In this episode of our podcast, we cover:
* Semyon’s own story as an immigrant who migrated to the U.S. from Moscow.
* How he became a member of the MIT Blackjack Team, which has been featured in movies, books, and documentaries.
* His experience as an entrepreneur and the companies that he founded.

Episode 156: Ben Jones - Founder & CEO, Ohi
Sometimes in life, you need to turn negatives into positives. Ben suffered a back injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down for a period of time. While recovering from surgery for over a year, he had to purchase everything online and it was his constant usage and dependency of eCommerce that sparked his idea.
Ohi was built to solve the problem for other eCommerce retailers who are trying to accomplish the same delivery expectations that consumers have based on the Amazon Prime experience and that is next day or same-day delivery. Ohi’s micro-warehousing strategy not only allows up and coming brands to compete, but this strategy is also much better for the environment, which was interesting to learn about as I wasn’t aware of how much of a negative impact that next day or two-day delivery has on our environment.
In this episode of our podcast, we cover:
* Ben’s early background in the Financial Services industry and why he decided to go back to business school.
* Advice on the application process at Stanford.
* How a back injury influenced the creation of Ohi.
* All of the details on Ohi’s strategy and how their business model is helping the environment.
* Advice on recruiting for your team.
* And more!

Episode 153: Alasdair McLean-Foreman - CEO, Teikametrics
The 800 meter race is said to be one of the hardest events for a runner. You need to have the long distance endurance combined with all-out effort as a sprinter. This is a perfect analogy for being an entrepreneur where you have to move fast, but you need to also think about the long haul for building a long-standing company for the future.
Thus, it’s fitting that Alasdair is a runner who specialized in the 800. He grew up in England before coming to America to attend Harvard, where he was the captain of the Track and Field Team. To help him buy textbooks, Alasdair began selling products out of his dorm room, which led to him becoming one of the first third-party sellers on Amazon. It was this experience that ultimately led him down the path of starting Teikametrics.
Teikametrics is the leading Retail Optimization Platform (ROP) for sellers on Amazon. They are optimizing billions of transactions for thousands of sellers, brands and agencies around the world to increase their overall sales and profits.
In this episode of our podcast, we cover:

Episode 152: Chris Meade - Co-CEO & Co-Founder, SportsRecruits
It takes courage to be able to take a risk and leave a career to pursue something that is your passion. Although it might be hard at times, they say that if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.
Chris is a perfect example of this scenario. He developed a passion for lacrosse that carried over into his college career playing at Wesleyan University. After working in an industry that didn’t inspire him, Chris and his co-founder and teammate, Matt Wheeler, took a risk to start a company around their passion for lacrosse.
They recognized an opportunity to help student-athletes and parents with the recruitment process. Thus, SportsRecruits… or what was originally called LacrosseRecruits, was born.
SportsRecruits, based in Brooklyn, is a platform that helps high school athletes market themselves to college coaches across the country. Think of it like a LinkedIn for college recruitment, where the student-athletes and parents have the tools and communication capabilities to assist with the recruitment process.
In this episode of our podcast, we cover:
* The current state of lacrosse as a growing sport and how the Premier Lacrosse League is getting traction as a professional league.
* Chris’ background and the story of how he left a steady job in real estate to pursue his passion.
* The early days of the company and how their scrappiness built a solid foundation for their business over the years.
* The evolution of their business to where it is today.
* Advice on the recruitment process for high school athletes.

Episode 151: Mike Zani - CEO, The Predictive Index
Let’s face it. Your company is only as strong as your team and Mike knows this first hand. As a former Olympic sailing coach, you can’t compete unless you have a winning team of people that mesh well. Yet, finding and hiring the right people that help you climb that mountain together is really hard.
It was Mike’s own use of The Predictive Index at a former company that opened his eyes to how effective their behavioral assessment tool was in terms of hiring. It was so effective, in fact, that he and his partner, Dan Muzquiz, went on to purchase the company to help expand its value for helping companies with designing and executing their talent strategies.
This interview actually takes place at the company’s first annual Optima conference, which brought together the best minds in business to learn cutting edge strategies for designing, hiring, and inspiring high-performing teams. We discuss why they started this talent optimization conference and its importance.
